13 nights starting from
Further to the huge success of our inaugural Frank Lloyd Wright tour to Chicago and Pittsburgh, we have set up a second tour looking at the great architect’s home and school in the desert at Taliesin West, some of his most impressive buildings and a series of other modern architectural styles in Arizona and California from Art Deco to post-Modern.
Conceived and led by the irrepressible Mike Hope, the tour will be a journey of discovery that illuminates and entertains in equal measure.

Day 1: Fly from London Heathrow to Phoenix and transfer by coach to Scottsdale and your hotel for a four-night stay. Dinner at Frank & Albert’s restaurant, named after Lloyd Wright and Albert Chase McArthur.
Day 2: After a long flight we have allowed a full day free to acclimatise at the hotel.
Day 3: Fully refreshed, a packed day takes in a “behind-the-scenes” tour, which includes tea and snacks in the colourful dining room at Taliesin West, Wright’s winter home, school and studio built in 1937 and used by him until his death in 1959, aged 91. Nestled into the desert foothills of the McDowell Mountains, it was built and maintained by Wright and his apprentices and thus one of the most personal of the architect’s creations. It is here that he drafted the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Our day will also take in the Cosanti Gallery, the exterior of the David Wright House (designed for his son) and visit to the Harold Price house, both designed by Wright.
Day 4: Another day of architectural marvels as we allow time in Wright’s Arizona Biltmore Hotel, external viewings of the Benjamin Adelman and Jorgine Boomer houses and visits to the excellent Phoenix Art Museum and Heard Museum of American Indian art.
Day 5: Today we head west through the iconic Joshua Tree National Park to the fabled resort of Palm Springs for overnight stay. This evening we will have dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 6: Heading further west, we head to Los Angeles, first of all to fabled Mulholland Drive, featured in innumerable films, songs and novels to view some of the stunning houses occupied over the past 90 years by the rich and famous of Hollywood. Continue onto Santa Monica and check-in to our hotel for an eight-night stay.
Day 7: A full day exploring some of the city’s iconic buildings from the 1920s onwards – the Golden Triangle of Beverly Hills, I.M. Pei’s Creative Artist Agency, Beverly Wilshere Hotel, Beverly Theatre, Civic Center and no tour of this part of LA is complete without a drive by tour of the stars’ houses.
Day 8: A full day to the downtown area of Los Angeles including the US Bank Tower, Oviatt Building, Biltmore Hotel, City Hall Observation Deck, Union Station, guided tour of the Central Library, Museum of Contemporary Art and the Bradbury Building, dating from 1895 and featuring an extraordinary sky lit atrium of walkways, stairs and elevators with ornate ironwork.
Day 9: Further exploration of a myriad of artistic styles takes in Barnsdall Art Park, Wright’s Hollyhock House, Lummis Home and Gardens, Exposition Park, Doheny Memorial Library at the University of Southern Callifornia, the exterior of the Aerospace Museum finishing at Griffith Park and Observatory as featured in the recent hit movie, La La Land.
Day 10: Today takes us to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with private guided tour, Sunset Boulevard, Miracle Mile, La Brea Tar Pits, Paramount Pictures studio tour and tour of the iconic Hollywood Bowl including the chance to go backstage and walk on the main stage.
Day 11: A day in Santa Monica includes the Getty Center, Eames House, home to the pioneering furniture designers, Palisades Park, Santa Monica Pier, Gehry’s Binocular Building and finishing the day with watching the sunset followed by dinner at Geoffrey’s famous restaurant at Malibu Beach.
Day 12: Another exciting day of architectural exploration takes us to Pasadena and Eastern LA for the Huntingdon Library and Art Collection, Norton Simon Museum, one of the world’s greatest private art collections, external view of the Millard House, Wright’s first “Usonian” house, Pasadena Civic Centre, and a private tour of the Rose Bowl Stadium.
Day 13: Finally to the Long Beach and Palos Verdes areas for a visit to the Queen Mary, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and Wayfarers Chapel at Ranchos Palos Verdes with farewell dinner at The Lobster in Santa Monica.
