ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Holiday Inn Telford from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, private dinner with wine and a talk by Mike Ingram – ‘The Welsh Marches - A bloody history.’

Day 2: Shrewsbury Abbey and Battlefield Site.
Our first visit of the day is to the medieval heart of Shrewsbury to discover its medieval passageways (shuts) as well as the historic abbey which dates back to the 11th century. Time for lunch (not included) before heading to the site of the Battle of Shrewsbury, which tells the story of the battle between Henry IV, his son, the future Henry V and Harry "Hotspur" Percy, son of the earl of Northumberland and the first in which English archers fought each other on English soil. Second talk at the hotel on another of the great Marcher families, ‘The Mortimer Earls of March.’

Day 3: Ludlow and its Castle and Stokesay Castle.
The lovely town of Ludlow is today renowned for its upmarket restaurants and delis, but its castle (now ruined) has an ancient, bloody history, built to hold back the Welsh, passing through generations of the De Lacy and Mortimer families before becoming a royal property in 1461. A guided tour will tell more. Time for lunch (not included) before heading to Stokesay Castle, one of the earliest and finest fortified manor houses in the country that dates back to 1291. The Great Hall remains largely unchanged and offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval life. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.00.

A wonderful tour, visiting memorable places. Mike Ingram is a good historian, I have known him for some time and class him as a friend, but it is the first time I have met Ian Jelf, (the Tour Manager), his local knowledge put the "icing and the cherry" on the trip.

All the Travel Editions staff were professional and caring, ensuring that we were made welcome, and felt safe and well informed throughout the weekend, and enabled to access the various sites according to personal capacity. Ian, the blue badge guide who led the tour provided amusing and informative commentaries rooted in his obvious fondness for and thorough knowledge of his home county. The Pulham's coach was comfortable and immaculately clean, driven smoothly and confidently through some narrow lanes. Mike the tour expert is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic for all things medieval; he and Ian made a good double act.
