Day 1: Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras to Lille and transfer by coach to hotel for check in for three-night stay. Afternoon walking tour of central Lille. Welcome reception, lecture 'Art Nouveau in Belgium' and dinner with wine at the atmospheric Art Nouveau Brasserie de la Paix, located three minutes' walk from the hotel.
Day 2: Lille walking tour, Villa Cavrois and La Piscine, Roubaix.
Morning walking tour of the Art Nouveau houses of Lille, including the exterior of the beautiful Maison Colliot, followed by a visit to the Villa Cavrois, re-opened in June 2015 after refurbishment. This afternoon visit the hidden gem that is La Piscine Museum at the former textile town of Roubaix, set in a stunning Art Deco swimming pool, whose contents include sample fabric books from the Art Nouveau period. Welcome drink, lecture 'Art Deco - An international style in context' and dinner with wine at the Brasserie de la Paix.
Day 3: Full day Antwerp including the KMSKA.
Full day excursion to the historic Belgian city of Antwerp. Antwerp has a strong artistic heritage, exhibited in its fine museums and churches, and is particularly famed as the birthplace of Rubens. At the end of the 19th century, the city, considered conservative by some, embraced Art Nouveau with the construction of the ‘golden triangle’ neighbourhood in Zurenborg and a number of other extraordinary buildings throughout the city, including the Art Nouveau station, regarded by some as the most beautiful station in the world. We will also visit the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) which reopened in September 2022 after a big decade-long renovation and houses a grand collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 14th - 20th centuries.
Day 4: Musée des Beaux Arts, Lille and home.
Morning visit (on foot) to the superb collection at Lille's Musee des Beaux Arts, the second largest collection in France after the Louvre. Time allowed for lunch (not included) before transferring to the station for return Eurostar to St Pancras.

Review by Warren who travelled 02-May-2024
I really enjoyed Lille - what a nice city and we had much better weather than at home (not difficult). The group were really nice and friendly. Unfortunately I was not feeling terribly well so had to make quite an effort to keep up. The coach to Antwerp was not very comfortable (2 hours each way). Found the Art Gallery at Roubaix a bit of a jumble - could have done with more guidance beforehand. Having said that I did enjoy the trip - my highlight was the Villa Cavrois about which I had known nothing.
Review by Heasman who travelled 02-May-2024
An excellent tour, with lovely fellow participants
Review by Ross who travelled 02-May-2024
This was a wonderful tour. It was lovely to meet Helene who was excellent and Scott’s enthusiasm and depth of knowledge is inspirational. The day we went to Antwerp was a long one - but the walking tour and Art Gallery were very worthwhile. It was a lovely group and I look forward to travelling with TE again
Review by Fletcher who travelled 02-May-2024
The tour managerbHelene was excellent, well organised, knowledgeable efficient and calm at all times.Instructions were clear. She was at the meeting place at St Pancras an hour at least before the designated time to issue tickets. Scott leading the tours was very knowledgable with a good sense of humour.Information given was about right not too overpowering.Session lengths and tours were right length and informative
Review by Clarke who travelled 07-March-2024
My only criticism is of the lectures which I found disappointing. They contained too much personal material were a bit repetitive and rushed at the end due to poor timing.
Review by Hassall who travelled 07-March-2024
The tour title says ... Art Deco and Art Nouveau. In reality it was predominantly architecture via building facades. Interesting as some were, there was too much. Helene was very good as our guide, always chirpy. Regretably we found that Scott Anderson was emotionally over-enthusiastic on our street tours and time management wasn't good. Had the weather been wet this would not have worked very well. His talks were good. The food at La Paix in Lille was pretty dire and on the second evening we noticed a sizeable amount left on plates for the waiters to clear. The visit to the Palais des Beaux Arts on the last day was disappointing as there was so little on Art Deco or Nouveau. Far better would have been a choice to visit either it or Charles de Gaulle's house. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp had a superior collection. Two such art museums was a bit superflouous.
Review by Ashton who travelled 07-March-2024
The only downside was that Scott Anderson talked too much on the coach. His lectures were interesting, but too long, especially on the first night, when we had been travelling since early morning. He should not advertise his and his wife's books at lectures. He virtually took over running the administration from Helene, who was excellent.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The itinerary was excellent and all the arrangements for visits, lectures and meals were well thought out. We particularly appreciated the tour guide`s care and support also the very informative and entertaining lectures.
Review by Blayney who travelled 07-March-2024
I enjoyed the trip but was disappointed in the visit to Antwerp. I had been looking forward to exploring this great city but our day trip didnt give enough time to get a feel of the city. With hindsight I think it would be best to run a separate trip to Antwerp and maybe explore Lille and the surrounding area in a more leisurely way.
Review by anonymous who travelled 07-March-2024
A most enjoyable trip led by Helene and Scott. We were extremely lucky with the weather which helped. I enjoyed the evening talks given by Scott. A fair amount of walking involved so comfortable shoes are essential. It is a packed programme with not much “down” time. All the transport worked well and kept to time. The hotel was clean and comfortable, the downside being a tiny lift!
Review by Martin who travelled 07-March-2024
My main concern was the quality of food in the restaurant - no choice - and of much poorer standard to the food being served to other clients. Very much a tourist menu. Also we should have been given some recommendations for restaurants on the third night. It was very busy in the town and we were told to 'go and forage for food' - not a good analogy.
Review by anonymous who travelled 07-March-2024
I thoroughly enjoyed my break in Lille and Antwerp and came back a lot more knowledgeable than before I started. Both the tour manager and the guide were excellent. I would therefore be grateful if you could send me your brochure.

Review by Turner who travelled 05-November-2024
Another great T Ed trip. Highlights were La Piscine and Antwerp. Did not enjoy Tournai visit - the Horta Musee was unattractive and gloomy - both outside and in. Mike Hope very engaging and knowledgeable. T Ed could do worse than consider Antwerp as a base for future trips.
Review by Mrs Jane Allison who travelled 05-November-2024
The connection at Ebbsfleet worked very well for us with easy access and egress to the road networks. Our train journey was somewhat less enjoyable as a result of other passengers around us. (The exploits of a stag weekend behind and some poorly behaved children opposite). Whilst we benefitted from Mike Hope's enthusiasm, we felt his timings good have been more realistic. The weather could also have been kinder but it could have been worse in February! Overall, we enjoyed it and learnt a lot about these art movements and enjoyed the company of our fellow passengers.

Very good trip. Karen Blackwell was outstanding - helpful, knowledgeable and very efficient.
Review by Anonymous who travelled 11-May-2023
An excellent tour which matched the description in the brochure. We saw a lot of Art Nouveau and Deco buildings which were expertly described. The two meals in the Brasserie de la Paix were excellent.. The slippage of the Eurostar from 0900 to 1100 and then to 1300 was unfotunate, but did shorten the initial tour of Lille on a wet afternoon. The hotel was in a good place and of a suitable standard with some small annoyances: inadequate drawer/cupboard space, impossible to get English Breakfast tea bags in room, scrambled egg and bacon were cold on the last day. The tours and sightseeing were all very good (Villa Cavrois, La Piscine, Golden Triangle) apart from: not a good idea to try to find a lunch spot in Roubaix, Antwerp Railway Station was disappointing and difficult to get to by coach (will be replaced by Art Gallery when refurb completed?), Antwerp markets much too crowded for comfort on a Saturday. Many thanks to Scott and Terry for working so hard to make it an enjoyable experience.
Review by Dury who travelled 09-March-2023
Our first and then second Eurostar trains were cancelled but we got away at 1pm on the first day - fine coming home. However, if Travel Editions had known in time to forewarn us about the 2nd cancellation it would have really helped to enable my friend and I to avoid having to travel on the tube during rush hour on the Heathrow to central London line - but perhaps you didn't know until too late

I thoroughly enjoyed and valued this , my first trip with Travel Editions, and am fully aware that the trip went ahead against the background of unpredictable Eurostar strikes, and changes to accompanying personnel. Our lecturer was enthusiastic and a delight to listen to, and seemed to work hard to compliment the gaps in the role of Tour Manager.

A very good tour, thank you. Our lecturer Anne Anderson is both well informed and enthusiastic, our tour manager Karen always helpful and friendly. My only comment is that it was all quite condensed so was a bit tiring. Four nights might have been better, but I know then there are cost issues. I shall be travelling with you again.

Tour manager coped very well with an outbreak of a tummy bug amongst the group on the final day - I'd like to commend her. The tours were good - I think maybe a little less per day and maybe make it a five day trip would be better - several people found it exhausting. But very educational and very interesting.
Review by Lane who travelled 05-March-2020
A very enjoyable trip, with an excellent art expert/lecturer. The reasons I have rated a couple of things as 'good' rather than 'excellent' are as follows: Administration: it wasn't 100% clear how the travel tickets would be sent. Everything else was emailed, but the tickets were posted by mail and I was slightly worried that I had not received them about 10 days before the trip. Accommodation: the hotel (Mercure Grand, Lille) was comfortable and quiet; however, I had a fault with the WC in my room, which I reported, but the problem recurred and it still wasn't fixed by the time I left. Other than that, everything was absolutely fine, and as my first experience with Travel Editions, I was very satisfied.
Review by who travelled 05-March-2020
Superb tour - Villa Cavrois alone is worth the trip (wish we'd had a little bit longer there!), plus Golden Triangle in Antwerp and the Piscene in Roubaix. Lille has many wonderful buildings, brought to life by Mike Hope's enthusiastic guided walks. Gill is an excellent tour manager, working hard in the background to make all arrangements go smoothly. Look forward to travelling with Mike and Gill again in the future. Highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture.

the restaurant was under new management and was chaotic. the menu for both evenings was the same...…...disappointing paper cups in our rooms at the hotel. Our group were well looked after. Mike Hope was excellent. Eurostar worked well. Your surcharge on a so-called first class seat was excessive. A complaint letter is on its way.
Review by Warner who travelled 19-September-2019
A fuller itinerary with timings , available either before trip or on arrival at hotel would have made the trip even better. Particularly an early indication of free time ,in Antwerp would have enabled us to research or check out options before we arrived in Antwerp. The visit to the villa came as a surprise as was not detailed in brochure.

Mike Hope's incredible knowledge and unflagging enthusiasm made this an unforgettable trip. I thought I knew a bit about the subject before we started, but found I had barely scratched the surface. I have done this tour before, in 2015. I enjoyed it just as much this time. Karen Blackwell is an excellent tour manager and |Mike Hope an engaging lecturer. You will know of the delay on the homecoming Eurostar train. Karen coped well and I think most people enjoyed the upgrade on the second train. The hotel is central and convenient and the weather was relatively kind to us. It was also a relief to miss the unrest seen in Paris and other places.
Review by Griffiths who travelled 06-December-2018
Karen as Tour Manager was excellent, and Mike Hope as Lecturer was outstanding. Hotel Mercure was a good base, but La Paix restaurant had a disappointingly restricted main course menu - no vegetarian options at all, and the one fish choice was poor. It was extremely noisy. which made conversation almost impossible.

We had a wonderful time.Mike Hope lecturer, and Karen tour guide, made the trip so enjoyable. We saw some incredible Art Nouveau buildings, especially in Antwerp.we were lucky to have been the first group to visit the Villa Cavrois. Recently opened to the public.

Loved this trip, the itinary was excellent, the hotel comfortable & central & Mike & Karen were extremely competent & good company. We particularly enjoyed being part of a smaller group.

This was an excellent holiday.I learnt so much from Mike , our enthusiastic Lecturer who had to act as tour Manager (very capably). Two good evening talks and meals, interesting city and museum visits. Mike was friendly, professional, inspiring.Good hotel.

Karen Blackwell is a pleasant, efficient, and helpful Tour Manager. Mike Hope has an extensive knowledge of art and architecture which he shares with an ebullient enthusiasm that is infective. We were enthralled by his talks and lectures and will be back for more.
Review by Dr John Matthews who travelled 09-April-2015
Karen, the Tour Manager, worked very hard and effectively to ensure the holiday was as enjoyable and hassle-free as possible. She was helpful, friendly and professional throughout. Mike, the expert for the holiday, was also excellent, with a friendly and cheery attitude combined with a very considerable knowledge and understanding of the relevant subject matter.
Review by Mr David Jordan who travelled 09-April-2015
Tour Leader Karen and Tour Expert Mike were exemplary throughout the tour. This was our first time with Travel Editions and the Karen / Mike partnership has certainly encouraged us to go with TE again.
Review by Mr Barry Buxton who travelled 09-April-2015
Very efficiently organised and very enthusiastic guide! A lot fitted in to a few days.
Review by Ms Susan Richards who travelled 09-April-2015
Mike Hope was an inspiring leader - so knowledgable about his subject, without being boring -so personable, giving time to each member of the group. We shall certainly consider taking another tour with your company in the future!
Review by Mrs Kathleen Bishell who travelled 02-April-2015
Mike Hope and Karen were great. The Hotel was fine though the room a bit small with no comfy chairs so could not unwind. We found it overall a bit too intense. The outings were excellent but a lecture at 6.30 two days running after a busy day was, for us at least, overdoing the 'culture'. Would have preferred more free time.

This was the best tour I have ever been on. Everything went like clockwork. There were no hold-ups at all. The staff at the hotel were very helpful. The tour rep and the lecturer really knew their stuff. The other people on the tour were very friendly. What more could you ask of a 4 day trip?

Our tour leader and guide were both excellent and put enormous effort into making this a good experience. many thanks to them both
Review by Dr Judith Gilley who travelled 12-March-2015
One slight niggle. Given the splendours on view everywhere else we visited, we felt that too long was spent in Tournai. The Horta gallery was impressive externally but its contents were unimpressive. Too much of the town centre is a poor modern pastiche of what it must have looked like before the war. Otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable visit to NE France & Antwerp . Neither area was familiar and we are likely to return. Must book early for Nancy!

A really first class visit. Difficult to see how it could be improved upon. Tour Manager, Karen was really good and Mike hope, the 'Expert' was highly knowledgeable.

The lecturer Mike Hope was truly excellent

First time I had taken a tour like this and I was very impressed. Our Tour Manager Karen was very efficient she was great company, very knowledgeable and extremely well organised. The Lecturer Mike was great. he gave so much information in an easy to follow manner and was great company. The hotel was just right for a three night city stay. My only niggle is the use of cardboard cups. For a four star hotel that obviously caters for many British visitors, surely a china mug would not be too onerous. All in all I am very satisfied with my trip and would certainly look to booking with you company again.
Review by Mrs Sandra Perrin who travelled 12-February-2015
Everything had been well thought through. The whole group was encouraged to mix and Karen's efficiency, local knowledge, light touch and sense of fun combined perfectly with Mike's energy, enthusiasm and deep knowledge of his subject. Neither of us can think of a single thing that could be tweaked. An enjoyable and stimulating few days.
Review by Mrs C Woodman who travelled 12-February-2015
Excellent tour with a tour manager who looked after our every need and a tour guide who was well informed and had a refreshingly original slant on all places visited.
Review by Mr Alastair Beattie who travelled 12-February-2015
Absolutely excellent all round. Opened my eyes to the architectural delights of so many unlikely places. Who knew that Lille and Antwerp had so much to offer once you had the wit and wisdom of Mike Hope to really open your eyes and clear your mind of preconceptions. Karen was our splendid tour manager with a light touch but a firm grasp of her party and all its arrangements. A party size of 16 turned out to be ideal for this tour.
Review by Mr Stephen Dunk who travelled 12-February-2015
The only thing that we thought might be helpful on future visits is a list of all the travellers' names (even just first names) as it can be difficult to remember names, it would help the group to gel more
Review by Ms R Bajjon who travelled 30-October-2014
Karen ensured that everything moved smoothly. The whole trip was a revelation. The lecturer was passionate and insightful. He ought to do a series on TV. Every element was beautifully articulated. The meals in the restaurant were also first class.

We thoroughly enjoyed this holiday. The talks were very informative. The group size of 17 was just right. We would happily recommend this tour to others. The only small criticism is that sometimes we were a bit rushed for time turning round for the evening lecture and meal.

MIke Hope is an excellent , informative and enthusiastic guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the holiday.
Review by Mrs Susan Savidge who travelled 30-October-2014
Loved having such an enthusiastic expert with us. I particularly like the idea of special interest/topic tourism rather than just the greatest hits approach. Would definitely consider travelling again. But keep numbers down! It was good to be in a group of 17. Huge tour parties are a bit of a turn off for me.
Review by Mrs M Cameron who travelled 30-October-2014
As you see, we were very happy with our experience on this tour. Karen did an excellent job and Mike was a wonderful, enthusiastic guide. We were asked at the end of the tour if there were any ideas which might improve the tour. At times, on our walkabouts, we were waved to by the occupants of the properties we were looking at. I wonder whether there would be any possibility of seeing inside perhaps a house that has been little changed., or them being illustrated in the talks. The a same with the plans of houses, how new inventions of the time, changed the priorities of rooms etc. Also perhaps something on the furniture and details of fireplaces, lighting etc.

Travel Editions feedback:
Thank you for your constructive comments and ideas which we will pass onto Mike Hope for future tours.
Mike Hope very informative. Very supportive tour guide as my husband was unwell. Really interesting tour. Would like more of this as would have liked more time in Antwerp in view of the large number of Art Nouveau properties.
Review by Dr Margaret Clamp who travelled 23-October-2014
We were expecting more Art Deco given the title in addition to the excellent Art Nouveau and would have preferred less cathedrals.

I really enjoyed the whole experience and, although I was on my own, I never felt left out. Mike was both entertaining and informative in his lectures and guided tours and Karen, the tour manager, was a delight - so helpful and caring.

A very well designed tour and an exceptional lecturer with a passion for the subject , outstanding communication skills and a sense of humour. This was a great short break and good value for money. Here's to 2015!

An enthusiastic lecturer and an excellent tour manager. The hotel room was small with limited space for clothes and no bedside table on one side of the bed.

It may have been better to do the walking tour of Lille on Sunday when it isn't busy.
Review by Mr Richard Thompson who travelled 03-April-2014
Very successful tour. Mike Hope was interesting, amusing and friendly. This was my fourth tour with TE and my first with Mike - the other three with Anne Anderson. I always liked Ann's handouts after the lectures - I know it is a lot of extra work for the lecturer, but the printed word helps to cement facts in an older brain!

Karen worked very hard to ensure we had vegetarian food. Thank you Karen. Mike Hope was brilliant.
Review by Mr Philip Baker who travelled 03-April-2014
Mike Hope's passion for his subject is so infectious. A mine of information and, with a wicked sense of humour, Mike brought Art Nouveau and Art Deco to life.
Review by Miss Susan Teasdale who travelled 03-April-2014
Fair value overall. Weather OK but if it had been wet, outdoor itinerary would have been very disappointing. Mike's two lectures entertaining but idiosyncratic; I would have preferred either a more general overview or detailed topics.
Review by Mr James Oldroyd who travelled 03-April-2014
Expert and manager were both excellent. We would have enjoyed a little more time in Lille. Walking tours gave us a taste of this lovely city. Would have loved more time in La Piscine, it was really good. In contrast Tournai was disappointing as Cathedral was mostly closed and museum was between exhibitions. The Antwerp day was magical. Both hotel and restaurant were inspired choices
Review by Mrs E Reid who travelled 20-March-2014
We could not fault any aspect of this trip. All seamlessly conducted by Mike and Karen and all with such good humour to boot! An English couple made enquiries of us at Lille station so Travel Editions was recommended before we'd even arrived home. Many thanks. Gill and Sue.
