  • Porto’s UNESCO listed old town with Art Nouveau treasures amongst medieval gems

  • The wondrous Lello & Irmao bookshop

  • Aveiro with its Arte Nova museum and wealth of houses

  • Delightful Grand Hotel de Porto as our base

The two Northern Portugese cities of Porto and Aveiro have a wealth of Art Nouveau architecture to be explored on this delightful new tour with Prof Anne Anderson. Portugal’s second city, Porto, is a delightful city, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a host of Art Nouveau buildings amongst its older architectural gems. Aveiro, whose wealth like Porto’s was built on trade, is a university city on the coast with plenty of Art Nouveau gems and a dedicated museum of “Arte Nova” as the movement was known in Portugal.

We enjoyed the trip overall having never visited Porto before. Anne Anderson is an entertaining and very knowledgeable guide -it was the third time we have been on one of her trips. However we felt that the actual 'Arte Nova' content was rather thin on this occasion, with time spent at Museo Romantico plus the free time on the Sunday morning (when we visited the cathedral ), not really on the topic. We did enjoy it nonetheless and our extra days on our own at the end made for a lovely break

Really enjoyed these few days away . Anne & Angela worked well together . I was particularly impressed with our tour manager’s quiet efficiency getting tickets / counting us in and out / making sure we were all ok etc etc . Rather sorry about our manky fish supper at the hotel on the first night . The second fish supper at restaurant in main square was much better but on current experience I wouldn’t say Portuguese cuisine is anything to write home about ! All in all though a jolly good mini break , thanks .

What a joy this trip was! Porto was wonderful, Anne & Sandra so entirely welcoming, affable, informed and helpful. The day-trip out to Aveiro and Costa Nova was full of surprises, and not rushed. Wish my pen could have kept up with Anne's information-loaded fine lectures. Good company, good food, a fine mix of programmed and free time. Once again, TE aced it!

The guide, Anne Anderson, was brilliant (my second tour with her and I am planning a third). The staff at the hotel were especially helpful (tuning my TV and allowing me an extension to check-out). The tour manager remained calm in some tricky situations. The whole tour was up to Travel Editions' high standard.

Very enjoyable tour with excellent guide and tour manager. Interesting mix of fellow travellers. Dinner at the hotel was at best average. The hot dishes were not hot enough for me., although there was a good selection.

We were allocated room 304.We had 30 mins turnaround before going on walk around Porto The on return to a lecture and dinner. No opportunity until next morning to advise tour manager that the room was unacceptable being very tired an inadequately equipped. This room should be avoided until it has had the " treatment " and even then for single occupancy only. After two days we were reallocated to a room on the second floor. This room was fantastic, freshly refurbished. We stayed four nights longer than the main party so some comfort was essential. The hotel staff were excellent:location ideal and the ground floor facilities were good.

Our expert, Ann, was also excellent too. Perhaps you should consider adding an extra prompt for these sort of tours.

Mostly an excellent trip though could have done with some audio equipment with such a large group looking at buildings in crowded streets as not easy to hear. Guide at Serralves casa Art deco was talking nonsensical and pretentious artspeak - don't need him! Art Nouveau Museum in Aveiro closed for renovation. All went to wrong cemetery in Aveiro first, though later found the right one (with Art Nouveau sculpture).

Overall a very positive experience. The tour leader was exceptionally good and the lecturer knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It was disappointing that the Art Nouveau Museum in Aveiro was closed for renovation - if that had been known in advance, the dates of the trip could perhaps have been amended accordingly. The hotel was good and in an excellent location, but the meal on the first night was very poor. By contrast, the restaurant meal on the second night was excellent. This was my first Travel Editions trip and it certainly won't be the last!

An excellent tour for my first guided art tour. Angela and Anne were impressive organisers and worked the itinerary to suit the changes in the weather. Anne was a font of knowledge and delivered the information in an informative and enjoyable manner. Right amount of 'herding' for the group- with some time to do some shopping. Will go on another trip with you.
