Join art historian Gerald Deslandes to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso through the landscapes of Provence to examine the creative influences and the wealth of masterpieces produced here by the world’s most famous artists.

Day 1: Marseille
Fly from London Gatwick to Marseille and transfer by coach to the city centre, where free time will be allowed for lunch before visiting the waterfront MuCEM to examine the museum’s fascinating collection on the culture of Europe and the Mediterranean. Transfer to Aix for check in to your hotel for three nights. This evening there will be a welcome drink followed by a lecture, ‘Cézanne, Van Gogh and Post Impressionism’, and dinner with wine at the hotel restaurant.
Day 2: Aix-en-Provence
Today is spent in Aix-en-Provence, exploring some of its many artistic connections. The first visit will be to Cézanne’s studio which is exactly as he left it, filled with the objects that he painted. We next visit the Hotel de Caumont, a Renaissance mansion that now houses art exhibitions as well as a series of delightful rooms and gardens. This afternoon we visit the Musée Granet to enjoy the collection of works by 18th and 19th century artists, followed by exploring the Collection Jean Planque, which is housed in a converted chapel, and features works by Picasso, Braque and Leger. This evening enjoy a second lecture, ‘The Art of Provence: the Mediterranean, Picasso and Matisse’ and dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Day 3: Bibemus Quarry and Chateau La Coste
We start the day with a visit to the Carrieres de Bibemus which Paul Cezanne used for inspiration. Time free in the centre of Aix to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy lunch before heading out of town to the lovely Chateau La Coste, for a guided art and architecture walk of the grounds and sculptures and time free to explore the art exhibition in the chateau. Originally a vineyard, artists and architects were invited to create a work that would live in the landscape. This is constantly evolving as new projects and installations are developed. Evening free.
Day 4: Nice and home
Our final day takes us to the Queen of the Riviera, Nice to visit museums devoted to two of Provence’s most illustrious artists: Matisse and Chagalle. Time will be allowed for personal exploration and lunch. Transfer to Nice Airport for return flight to London Gatwick.
