Cathedrals and Churches of Devon and Cornwall

All tours on this holiday have now departed. Future departure dates will be confirmed in due course.

  • Exeter Cathedral, one of the country’s finest

  • Buckfast Abbey – a working Benedictine monastery

  • Two illuminating talks from Mike Hope

Mike Hope’s 8th of an anticipated 15 tours to see all the major churches in England takes us to the West Country of Devon and Cornwall for a cornucopia of architectural styles, from the splendour of Exeter Cathedral to the rural charm of St Germans, tucked behind a magnificent country house. Mike’s erudite and witty commentary will explain and illuminate.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Crowne Plaza, Plymouth from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, private dinner with wine and talk by Mike Hope - ‘An overview of Cornish ecclesiastical architecture’.

Day 2: Truro Cathedral, Saint Neot and Blisland Churches.
We head west today over the Tamar into Cornwall and the Victorian Gothic Revival Cathedral in Truro. Heading back east this afternoon, we visit the ancient church at Saint Neot, renowned for its glorious 15th century stained glass windows. Then to St Protus and St Hyacinth’s Church, Blisland is a grade 1 listed parish church dating back to Norman times.

Day 3: RC Cathedral, St Andrews Church, Plymouth and St Germans Church.
On foot in Plymouth this morning to get a flavour of this maritime city and see its two main churches – the RC Cathedral built in the mid-1800’s and St Andrew’s on Royal Parade in the heart of the city. This afternoon, we head out of the city to the pretty village of St Germans and the Norman Priory Church in the grounds of the lovely Port Eliot Estate and to St Mary Magdalene’s at Launceston. Second talk from Mike: ‘Exeter Cathedral and the churches of Devon’.

Day 4: Exeter Cathedral, Ottery St Mary and Buckfast Abbey.
Seat of the Bishop of Exeter, the Cathedral was completed around 1400 and has several notable features including an astronomical clock and the longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling in England. A very enjoyable and informative trip led by Mike Hope. The Hotel was excellent and the coach driver did well to negotiate the narrow lanes. We would have preferred a little longer in the churches to look around after having heard Mike Hopes explanations.

Mike Hope was the best guide we have ever had. In fact we would like notice of future tours guided by him so that we can book early and plan around them.

I would have preferred to end the tour with a day of visits in Plymouth (and nearby) to avoid the need to travel back from Exeter to Plymouth to collect luggage and catch the train home from Plymouth via Exeter.

Excellent trip. Mike an excellent guide. Transport and driver - also excellent. Hotel could have been better. Resembled Fawlty Towers. Complete lack of management to make the whole place run smoothly. No co-ordination between anybody and head office seemed to be the place to pass the buck too. Room pleasant but directly behind the lift shafts. It was noisy, due to lifts rumbling up and down. Could have made a fuss and asked to move, but with the hotel management so ramshackled felt this was just too much to ask. Note: noisy room was a known problem. Probably thought - we may have been deaf or with hearing limitations: a problem with perceived older guests!! The evening meal was "corporate". Uninspiring and only adequate for a hungry traveller in need of sustenance. However, breakfast excellent. Team spirit kept us going and comparing notes kept us entertained through out the trip. A thoroughly enjoyable 3 days.
