Cathedrals and Churches of the East Midlands

All tours on this holiday have now departed. Future departure dates will be confirmed in due course.

  • The superb Southwell Minster

  • Lincoln and its Cathedral

  • Leicester Cathedral and Richard III tomb

The sixth tour in Mike Hope’s planned series of tours to visit all the cathedrals in England takes us to the East Midlands, an area rich in ecclesiastical history. From our base in the lovely town of Southwell we visit its minster as well as the cathedrals at Derby, Leicester (where Richard III now lies), Lincoln and Nottingham as well as a host of historic churches, abbeys and Monastic life at Mount St Bernard Abbey.

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Saracen’s Head Hotel, Southwell from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, dinner with wine and talk from Mike Hope - ‘The Roman Catholic Cathedral in England’.

Day 2: Southwell, Newark and Lincoln.
A full day of visits takes us first to Southwell Minster, a short walk from the hotel and the cathedral church of Nottinghamshire, dating back 900 years. We then head out to Newark – a key site in British medieval history, before heading to the vast Cathedral at Lincoln, dating back to 1088, located in the heart of one of England’s most beautiful cities. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Nottingham and Leicester.
Another packed day in store as we head first to the vibrant city of Nottingham to visit its Roman Catholic Cathedral and St Mary’s Church before visiting the working Trappist monastery at Mount St Bernard Abbey for a fascinating glimpse into monastic life, little changed since its foundation in 1835. Then it’s off to Leicester Cathedral where you will see the new tomb of Richard III, before returning to the hotel. Talk from Mike Hope ‘Kings, Queens and Princes and Princesses - the last resting places of the Royal Dynasties of the English Crown’.

Day 4: Derby Cathedral, Repton, Melbourne, Breedon-on-the-Hill and Stauton Harold Churches.
First up is Derby Cathedral with its 212-foot high Tudor bell tower, the second highest in the UK and not for the faint-hearted! Then a series of interesting churches, starting with Repton, then Melbourne, Breedon-on-the-Hill and 17th century Staunton Harold, owned by the National Trust with a fine panelled interior. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.30.

This was a fascinating tour, which included some rarely visited gems.Plenty of visual variety and two interesting evening talks. Information regarding public transport to both Newark and Nottingham stations from Southwell would have been helpful.
