Day 1: Depart Portsmouth by overnight Brittany Ferries service to St Malo with reserved cabin
(Parking at Portsmouth is plentiful, secure and costs £13 per day or the train station is 5 minutes by taxi.)
Day 2: Arrival and walking tour of St Malo
Our overnight ferry arrives in the morning and we transfer by coach to the hotel to drop off luggage. A guided walking tour of the old town nearby will show some of its delights. It is a walled port city that was once notorious for piracy, but today the only treasure is the elegant, old architecture, particularly the superb citadel at the city’s heart and a host of superb mansions that line its ancient streets. Its long and tempestuous history has led to it retaining a fiercely independent spirit, whose motto is "Foremost a native of St Malo, a Breton perhaps, and a Frenchman last."
Day 3: Full day tour to Fort La Latte and St Cast le Guildo
The impressive 13th century Fort La Latte has enjoyed a colourful history including capture by the British in 1490, and is majestically situated overlooking the Atlantic with stunning views of the Emerald Coast. The seaside resort of St Cast Le Guildo has no fewer than seven beaches as well as the ruins of a castle and 12th century Romanesque church.
Day 4: Full day tour to Mont-Saint-Michel and Dol-de-Bretagne
The breath-taking Mont-Saint-Michel is definitely worth a quick sojourn into Normandy. The island commune has been the seat of a monastery since the 8th century though it was at its most influential in the 12th and 13th centuries as a pilgrimage site. The abbey, unchanged for centuries, crowns the island, the village at its foot full of shops and restaurants. A religious centre in the 9th century, Dol-de-Bretagne is dominated its St Samson Cathedral but has a host of other handsome medieval buildings.
Day 5: Full day tour to Dinan and Dinard
The medieval walled town of Dinan sits on a hilltop overlooking the River Rance. Some of its many historical buildings date back to the 13th century and the city walls are excellent for a stroll that will lead you to the Château de Dinan. Belle Époque villas and sandy beaches made Dinard France’s top resort until the 1930s and attracted many famous names including Picasso, Debussy and Winston Churchill. Reurn St Malo in good time to freshen up for gala Christmas Eve dinner with wine at a charming local restaurant close to the hotel.
Day 6: Full day free with lunch at a local restaurant.
An afternoon seaside stroll is the perfect antidote to the festive indulgence.
Day 7: Full day tour to Rennes
Rennes, the regional capital is a likeable, lively city. Though much of the historic centre was rebuilt in the 1720s following a devastating fire, there are still medieval gems to be found amongst the grand 18th century replacements. For an excellent overview of life in Brittany since pre-historic times visit the Museé de Bretagne, whilst the Musée des Beaux Arts is notable for its paintings and drawings collection.
Day 8: Transfer by coach back to the port for daytime crossing to Portsmouth
NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 49 passengers.
