ITINERARY

Day 1: Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Lille and onwards to Lyon by TGV. On arrival transfer by coach to the Les Grillons Hotel (approx. two hours).

Day 2: Full day exploring Annecy and the lake.
One of the most attractive and popular resorts in the French Alps, the town of Annecy sits on the banks of the lake surrounded by breath-taking alpine scenery. The imposing château on the hill and the Palais de l’Ile provide much historical interest, and you’ll find the canals and narrow passages of the 16th century old town enchanting.

Day 3: Full day tour to Chambéry and Aix-les-Bains.
Once the capital of Savoy, the dignified town of Chambéry has a distinctly Italianate feel that betrays its history as part of Italy. Highlights here include its much-loved and extravagant Fontaine des Eléphants, Chateau of the Dukes of Savoy dating back to the 14th century and 17th century country house, Les Charmettes, once home to the philosopher Rousseau. Aix-les-Bains is a gracious spa town on Lac du Bourget, famed for its thermal baths and Faure Museum housing a collection of Impressionist paintings and Rodin statues.

Day 4: Full day tour to Chamonix.
A busy and cosmopolitan town, Chamonix sits at the foot of Mont Blanc surrounded by the best of mountain scenery – glaciers, snow-capped peaks and lush green meadows. It is the base for all mountain based activities, in summer and winter – for spectacular views take the Aiguille du Midi cable car up Mont Blanc itself, or, for those who aren’t big fans of heights, try the Montenvers rack railway which will take you to the foot of the Mer de Glace glacier.

Day 5: Full day tour to Geneva with a Christmas Eve festive dinner at the hotel.
In terms of being international and cosmopolitan there aren’t many cities that can compare with Geneva. Its location is fantastic, strung along the shore of mountain-backed Lake Geneva, and it is the place that many international organisations choose to base their European headquarters – you may see the UN, WHO and Red Cross. The museums here are world class and the old town is wonderfully picturesque – heading up the 16th century St Peter’s Cathedral gives great views over the city, lake and mountains beyond.

Day 6: Full day to relax and enjoy the hotel grounds and facilities with Christmas Day lunch and dinner at the hotel.

Day 7: Full day tour to Lake Geneva, Évian and Yvoire.
The expanse of Lake Geneva (or Lac Léman to the French) forms a natural border between France and Switzerland. The awe-inspiring scenery and fine climate made the shores of the lake popular for health resorts the most well-known being Évian-les-Bains, where you can take a lovely stroll along the tree-lined waterfront. Take a bottle along to taste the famous water from the Source Cachat on the Avenue des Sources. Picturesque Yvoire is a lovely medieval village of narrow cobbled streets and stone houses sloping down to the edge of the water. The castle and two stone gateways date from the 14th century.

Day 8: Transfer to Annecy station and travel by TGV train to Paris and onwards by Eurostar to Ebbsfleet or St Pancras.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion

Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 49 passengers.

The hotel and its staff are outstanding, with wonderful food and excellent catering for different diets. The whole trip was really enjoyable with some excellent tours. We were, however, disappointed with Geraldine, who came nowhere near the standard of all the other Travel Editions tour managers we've had. We often find that tour managers are much too fussy and controlling, but she was rather the opposite and we felt we weren't being given enough information in a timely fashion.

Sadly I was ill on two days of the trip but the Hotel Proprietor was extremely solicitous and even took me to a doctor on Boxing Day. No praise can be too high for the hotel - food, accommodation and excellent staff including a totally bilingual ( and accent-less!)proprietor. I can see why this is travel Editions' favourite venue!

We thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this fantastic hotel and very much appreciated the wonderful hospitality of Aurelie, Sebastien and all the staff. The food was outstanding , and Sebastien exceeded all expectations in providing my wife with amazing alternative dishes to accommodate her special dietary requirements. Our to trip to Chamonix was a particular highlight and we were mostly lucky with the weather. The only negative was the poor quality of our tour manager whose abrasive and hectoring manner seemed inappropriate and untypical every other Travel Editions Tour Manager we have encountered.

Weather was not good, so sightseeing tours were disappointing. Chambery was sufficiently interesting to compensate, but Aix-les=Bains was, frankly, a bore. The hotel, Les Grillons, was a delight - fabulous food and a charming hostess and family.

Better Wi-fi in the hotel would be appreciated, otherwise an outstanding hotel and restaurant. Suggestion. Offer an option of flying to Geneva and be picked up there rather than travel by train. The French trains lacked both food and drink this year making the journey much less pleasant.

Despite the lack of roaring log fires (as promised in the brochure) this proved to be an excellent Christmas break. Our hosts Sebastian and Aurelie were first class: hard-working, enthusiastic professional, kind, helpful and ever-smiling. The food was first class, and the hotel very comfortable and warm, although distinctly chilly on the first evening, having been closed up since October. So a hot water water and warm clothes for the first evening are a good idea. Steve, our Tour Manager, was also at the top of his game: dealing effortlessly and efficiently with problems as they arose (on this particular tour many guests seemed to shed belongings left right and centre!). Both coach drivers were charming, helpful, and ever patient – as there were always stragglers on each and every day trip. Excellent idea of Steve’s to swap the days around so that we had a beautiful sunny day for Chamonix and not such a long trip on the last day – giving us time to pack for departure. Pity the tourist office in Chambéry was closed and there were no maps available to us. Fortunately only two people got a bit lost returning to the coach.

Travel Editions feedback:

Thank you for your kind comments and sorry the mild weather negated the need for a roaring fire but pleased to learn you had a good holiday all the same!

A lovely location with an excellent hotel team. The chef was amazing with the quality of food. I was truly impressed by his willingness and ability to adjust his recipes to our dietary needs. This was impressove and meant that my friend and I were able to enjoy more or less the same food as the other guests without feeling 2nd class guests, as is so often the case. At all times he and Orely were so thoughtful and helpful, giving the impression that nothing was too much trouble.

We can't praise hotel "Les Grillons" highly enough. The owners and staff did an amazing job. Nothing was too much trouble, and always done with a smile . Quite a few people had special dietary requirements which were dealt with imaginatively but without fuss. The food was superb. We had been told it was good but never expected it to be of such a high standard. The tour itself was excellent but the hotel made the holiday very special indeed.

Fantastic. Train journey on both Eurostar and TGV were very good, with good seats. The hotel was brilliant (although we had a slight problem with the lack of hot water but this was quickly fixed). The staff were so friendly and efficient. Our room was exceedingly well appointed and very comfortable. The food was "out of this world" with a great variety of local produce producing fantastic tastes. Some of the best food we have tasted in a long time. The coach trips were very good and varied, although on some tours we did seem to be hanging around a little bit waiting. Your Tour Manager, Steve, was brilliant, nothing was too much trouble for him and his knowledge of the area was truly encyclopedic, a great manager. The tour driver "Stan" was a very good driver and a very nice man, again nothing was too much trouble for him. Overall a very, very good holiday break. Thank you.

The food at the hotel (Les Grillons) was exceptionally good. It would have impressed any gourmet and all the guests seemed to have a similar view. Furthermore, the hotel staff were all so very friendly. A very good and knowledgeable tour manager, as well as good weather (apart from one day) made for a superb holiday experience.
