Day 1: Arrival in Malta
Fly from London Gatwick to Malta’s captivating Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its history and architecture, built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century. On arrival, transfer to your hotel in nearby Sliema. After time to settle in, enjoy a welcome drink and light dinner this evening.
Day 2: Valletta
This morning, explore Valletta with a local guide, discovering its honey-coloured streets and wealth of architectural treasures. Elegant palaces and the historic auberges—once home to the Knights—line the city’s grid-like streets. Visit the magnificent St John’s Co-Cathedral, whose richly adorned interior contrasts with its austere exterior, and admire masterpieces including Caravaggio’s The Beheading of St John the Baptist. Continue to the peaceful Upper Barrakka Gardens, offering sweeping views across the Grand Harbour. Later, sample a selection of traditional Maltese Christmas sweets before an afternoon at leisure to explore further or relax.
Day 3: Mdina
Travel inland to Mdina, the ancient former capital, set high on a hill and known as the “Silent City” for its tranquil atmosphere. On a guided walk, pass through narrow, winding streets flanked by noble houses and shaded courtyards. Visit St Paul’s Cathedral, associated with the Apostle’s visit to Malta following his shipwreck. There will be time to take in the city’s far-reaching views before returning to Sliema for an afternoon at leisure. This evening, gather for a festive Christmas Eve dinner, accompanied by wine.
Day 4: Christmas Day
Enjoy a relaxed Christmas Day. Spend the morning at your own pace, perhaps taking a stroll along the seafront. A Christmas Day lunch is included, offering a leisurely opportunity to celebrate in pleasant surroundings.
Day 5: Gozo
Today’s excursion takes you by ferry to Gozo, Malta’s smaller and greener sister island, known for its slower pace of life and rural character. Visit the island’s capital, Victoria, where the imposing Citadel dominates the skyline and offers fine views across the island. Continue to the remarkable Ġgantija Temples, a UNESCO-listed site dating back over 5,000 years and among the world’s earliest monumental stone structures. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon.
Day 6: The Three Cities
Discover the historic Three Cities—Birgu (Vittoriosa), Senglea and Cospicua—situated on the southern side of the Grand Harbour. These fortified settlements played a central role during the Great Siege of 1565. Visit Fort St Angelo in Birgu, a formidable stronghold with far-reaching views and a storied past. There will also be time to wander through the quieter streets of Senglea and Cospicua, offering a glimpse into everyday Maltese life.
Day 7: At Leisure
A full day at leisure to enjoy Malta at your own pace. You may wish to return to Valletta to explore its museums and churches in greater depth, visit local shops, or simply relax in one of its many cafés while soaking up the atmosphere.
Day 8: Departure
