ITINERARY

Day 1: Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris and onwards to Mulhouse by TGV. On arrival, transfer by coach to Freiburg (approx. 70 minutes) and the Mercure am Munster Hotel. This evening dinner is included at the hotel.

Day 2: Morning guided tour of Freiburg with afternoon free.
One of Germany’s most beautiful and historic cities, Freiburg is a vibrant university town based around a magnificent Gothic Münster (cathedral), built in red sandstone. Freiburg has a lovely compact historic centre, fanning out from the cathedral, with other sights including the university quarter, Rathausplatz and the old town market square and morning market.

Day 3: Full day tour to Baden-Baden, Schwarzwaldhochstrasse, Freudenstadt and Schiltach.
A day of contrasts as we head to the elegant spa town of Baden-Baden, one of Germany’s most fashionable resorts in the 19th century, which retains splendid Belle-Époque architecture including a casino that is lauded as the most beautiful in the world. Travelling the Black Forest panoramic road we will pay a visit to the lovely town of Freudenstadt, famed for its market square and the pretty half-timbered village of Schiltach.

Day 4: Morning tour to Glottertal, Saint Peter and Titisee, with Christmas Eve dinner at a local restaurant.
A scenic day as we head first to the pretty village of Glottertal, then on to the 18th century Baroque abbey and church of Saint Peter, dating from 1727. Finally, the relaxed mountain spa town of Titisee sits on the clear waters of the lake of the same name. The waterfront promenade is the perfect place for a stroll. Return to Freiburg mid-afternoon with plenty of time to freshen up for festive Christmas Eve dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 5: Full day free in Freiburg with festive Christmas Day lunch at a local restaurant.

Day 6: Full day tour to the Rheinfall and Stein am Rhein.
The Rheinfall is Europe’s largest plain waterfall, located on the Upper Rhine in Switzerland, and provides a truly spectacular sight that has captivated tourists for centuries, including JMW Turner and Mary Shelley. Stein am Rhein, also located on Switzerland’s Upper Rhine, has a compact but superbly well preserved medieval centre that still retains an ancient street plan. Perfectly adding to the old world atmosphere, the area is now pedestrianized and many of the buildings boast traditional frescoes.

Day 7: Full day tour to Basel.
The city of Basel sits on Switzerland’s juncture with Germany and France. The city has an illustrious history, littered with notable names ranging from Erasmus to Holbein to Nietzsche and its patronage of arts and culture can be seen today in the form of many world-class museums and galleries including the Historisches Museum and the Fountain Beyeler. Basel old town is packed with heritage sites, the spectacular 13th century Münster and its atmospheric cloisters and the Münsterplatz being must-sees.

The hotel was excellent for location and superb breakfast buffet but lacked atmosphere - no lounge to meet as a group and have a drink or to sit comfortably and read a book away from the bedroom where the lighting was poor. Rather grey weather spoilt some excursions. Would have liked longer at Baden Baden.

This was a new Christmas tour which we would recommend. It was centrally based in Freiburg close to the main amenities and there was a good choice of bars and places to eat and before Christmas a vibrant market. The meal arrangements worked well allowing the opportunity and flexibility to get out in the evening and the two Christmas meals in a local restaurant really made it a festive occasion. The trips out were easy paced with no very early starts and both the tour manager Steve and coach driver Oscar worked the itinerary to suit the weather conditions. In some respects we were lucky with the weather-had it been cold, icy and snowy then a couple of the trips might have been challenging. All in all another good experience and we have no hesitation in recommending this to other travellers who like these types of holiday.

This was out 9th or so year of doing a Travel Editions Xmas tour, and we were, as usual, very happy with it. Steve, the guide, was amusing and unflappable - I hope he's doing another of our tours in future. Thanks.
