• Our base Udine – an under-rated gem
• Gorgeous seaside Trieste – one of Italy’s most beautiful cities
• Venzone, voted 2017’s most beautiful small town in Italy
• Prosciutto tasting in San Daniele
Perhaps the least known of all the Italian regions, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia does not trip easily off the tongue but a visit here is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Wonderful, small cities that are perfect to explore on foot, glorious scenery, UNESCO protected Roman ruins, a secluded abbey, prosciutto and prosecco tasting, the small town voted Italy’s most beautiful in 2017 and a medieval city fortress all combine to create a tour full of interest and contrasts.
Day 1: Fly from London Gatwick to Venice and on arrival transfer to the Ambassador Palace Hotel, Udine (approx. 90 minutes).
Day 2: Udine. Morning guied walking tour with afternoon free in Udine, reminiscent of Venice, whose Piazza Libertà has been called “the most beautiful Venetian Square on the mainland”.
Day 3: Full day in Trieste. Periods of occupation and its location close to Slovenia have made Trieste a melting pot of different cultures. Highlights include the seaside Piazza Unità d’Italia with its six white palaces.
Day 4: Half day tour of the Gorizia Hills. A glorious day of scenery also includes the secluded, century old Abbey of Rosazzo and the old town of Cividale del Friuli, that houses some important art from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Day 5: Full day Aquileia, Grado and Palmanova. We travel south to Aquileia for a guided visit. Founded in 181 B.C., the small town of Aquilaeia has an important archaeological area that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our day also takes us to the seaside town of Grado and Palmanova, a masterpiece of Venetian military architecture, and the very model of a city fortress.
Day 6: Full day Venzone, San Daniele, Spilimbergo and Valvasone. First to Venzone, voted 2017’s most beautiful small town in Italy, then to San Daniele for a guided walk, a tasting of the famous prosciutto, chocolate and prosecco before visiting Spilimbergo, renowned for its mosaics and Valvasone for a short guided walk of the medieval old town.
Day 7: Transfer from Udine to Venice airport for return flight to London Gatwick.
NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 40 passengers.

A goodish tour.

Very well organised trip covering territory with few tourists, other than Italians. Huge amount to see without crowds Very good tour manager and local guides. Perhaps a couple of points. The last day was very crowded, 4 destinations of which at least one could have been missed. Also, on the Trieste trip we were taken to a concentration camp made into a memorial For personal reasons I very strongly approved, and did know about it. No-one else in the group did and it may be helpful in future to warn people. My only other point is that the group did not fit together particularly well, but no-one can predict that.
