From the ancient majesty of the Colosseum to the sweeping expanse of St Peter’s Square, the architectural highlights of Rome are world renowned. But beyond the revered landmarks lies a treasure chest of lesser-known architectural gems. On this four-day tour, you will cover all the major highlights as well as the secret wonders that grace the winding alleys and majestic piazzas of this venerable city. Accompanied throughout by architecture expert Jonathan Glancey, you will hear his fascinating insights during two in-depth talks and a series of guided visits. You will also enjoy time with Nick Squires, The Telegraph’s Rome Correspondent, who will share his thoughts on the past and present of this fascinating city.

Day 1: Fly to Rome and tour of ancient Rome.
Fly from London Heathrow to Rome and begin the tour, starting with Ancient Rome, including the Domus Aurea, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Theatre of Marcellus, Baths of Diocletian, Hadrian's Mausoleum/Castel Sant'Angelo and The Pantheon. Evening lecture from Jonathan and dinner with wine.

Day 2: Post-Imperial and Renaissance Rome.
Our journey through time and architectural history continues with a look at post-Imperial Roman architecture in the morning including the Basilicas of the Santi Quattro Coronati, Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Santa Maria in Trastevere and Church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli. In the afternoon we time travel forward some 1500 years to see the Palazzo Venezia, Bramante's Tempietto in the Church of San Pietro Montorio and St Peter's Basilica. Evening talks from the Telegraph’s Rome correspondent, Nick Squires and dinner with wine.

Day 3: Renaissance Rome.
More Renaissance treasures today including the Church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, Palazzo Colonna, Piazza del Popolo, Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, the Spanish Steps, Keats-Shelley House, Palazzo Spada, Trevi Fountain and Protestant Cemetery. Early evening Jonathan will give a second talk at the hotel with the evening free.

Day 4: 20th & 21st century Rome.
Our last today moves forward another 500 years to the 20th and 21st Century, looking at the legacy of Mussolini up to the present day. Buildings include MAXXI (Museum of 21st Century Art), Ara Pacis, Ostiense Railway Station, Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, Museo della Civiltà Romana and Palazzo dello Sport, Vittorio Emanuele Monument, Via della Conciliazione, Foro Mussolini Italico, Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, Mussolini Obelisk. Late afternoon transfer back to the airport for return flight to London Heathrow.

NB: Exact order of itinerary may vary according to local conditions, weather, garden openings and tour manager's discretion.

Modern, four-star ‘boutique’ hotel, situated in the Prati district of Rome close to the Tiber river, about 2km from St Peter’s Basilica and within easy reach of the sites visited (by coach) and from the city centre by metro or bus. Facilities at this relatively small (64 room) hotel include restaurant, gym, Turkish Bath, Jacuzzi and very comfortable bedrooms with all modern amenities including free wi-fi.
