More Magnificent Men

All tours on this holiday have now departed. Future departure dates will be confirmed in due course.

  • Flight in an historic RAF De Havilland Devon from Headcorn Aerodrome

  • Brenzett Aeronautical Museum

  • Hawkinge Battle of Britain Museum

  • Capel-le-Ferne Memorial to the Few

Our Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines tour has been one of our most popular tours for the past two or three years and we have been looking for another aviation experience that we felt could match it. With our More Magnificent Men tour, based in Kent, we believe we have found it. Again accompanied throughout by aviation expert David W. Lee, the tour’s highlight is a flight in a vintage RAF de Havilland Devon eight-seater aircraft over the lovely Kent countryside, including lovely Leeds Castle. This scenic flight is a nostalgic throwback to the dawn of mass air travel, when the de Havilland Devon (known as the Dove) was THE short haul passenger airliner to be seen in during the 1950s and was used by many airlines. It remained part of the Royal Flight until the 1970s and was recently featured in the Netflix production of “The Crown.” This fascinating new tour also includes a wealth of aviation sights reflecting the area’s pivotal role in World War II.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive independently from 15.00
This evening there will be a welcome reception, private dinner with wine and a talk from aviation expert, David W. Lee.

Day 2: Flight in a RAF De Havilland aircraft, Lashenden Air Warfare Museum, Romney Marsh Wartime Collection and Brenzett Aeronautical Museum
The highlight of this tour is undoubtedly the flight in a RAF De Havilland aircraft at Headcorn, where there will also be plenty of time to look at the on-site Lashenden Air Warfare Museum, whose collection includes an original V1 Flying Bomb. Your day will also include a visit to the Romney Marsh Wartime Collection of wartime equipment, remains from crash sites and memorabilia at the Brenzett Aeronautical Museum. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Hawkinge Battle of Britain Museum, Battle of Britain Memorial and Manston
Our first visit of the day is to the Hawkinge Battle of Britain Museum which holds the largest Battle of Britain collection in the world with artefacts from over 700 crashed aircraft.  Our next visit is to the moving Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne, which honours the heroes of the Battle of Britian, set on the white cliffs overlooking the Channel. Finally, to the Spitfire and Hurricane Museum at Manston, which houses TB752, one of the few surviving Spitfires with a wartime record and the LF751 Hurricane, which was built at Langley in 1944  (or the adjacent RAF Museum if you prefer) before returning to the hotel for approximately 17.30.

VIP NB. In the unlikely event of the Devon flight being cancelled for any reason a voucher for a replacement flight only will be issued.

The tour was excellent from start to finish and it was good to meet Robert Owen again. Both Robert and David were first class guides/hosts and very knowledgeable in their subjects. We would like to do more aviation tours with them and look forward to seeing what is on offer next year.

The flight was in a Tiger Moth which was an amazing experience. The museums were all first class with very enthusiastic volunteers showing us around. A good group who were on the tour as aviation enthusiasts. A most enjoyable tour.

We really enjoyed the few days. Robert & David make an excellent pair as tour manager and guide/lecturer. The Tiger Moth Flight was a real bonus, much better than the De Havilland. The hotel was very comfortable but the food was disappointing. The restaurant meal the second night was very poor and they got the dessert orders completely wrong and we could not have what we had ordered. However, we look forward to another Travel Editions tour next year. Please put us down to receive the brochure for British tours.

One of the best! Leaders well researched and provided an excellent introduction to the museums and sites. Although the Devon aircraft was unavailable, the opportunity to fly in a Tiger Moth was a bonus. A first class service by the staff of Aero Legends at Headcorn Lastenden.

The formation flights of three Tiger Moths, which included overflying Leeds Castle, were excellent. The briefing and flight preparation were completed by knowledgable and pleasant staff who ensured that even nervous passengers enjoyed this unique experience.

The change of flight arrangements was, I believe, to our advantage. The flights were more thrilling than they would have been in the original plane. It may cost more, but if you run the trip again I suggest you use the Gypsy Moth. Not the fault of TE but all of us staying the extra nght wee locked out of our rooms on return to the hotel on saturday afternoon. hey hadnt issued us with key cards to cover the last night. When I commented to the Receptionist she just said "Human Error!!"
