Stay in the most beautiful town on the island, Chania, an historic and incredibly picturesque Venetian harbour town
Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, offers a little bit of everything; history, scenery, culture, tradition and a wonderful interior that provides an almost untouched beauty and authenticity. We want to introduce a little of all these aspects during this tour as we believe each is an important part of what makes Crete such a special place. Of course, we visit some of the islands most famous and interesting historic sites, but we also travel through some of its most picturesque countryside, visit typical Cretan villages where we will eat at local tavernas and enjoy some wonderful local cuisine. We will also experience the islands incredible diversity with our two bases for the tour, the harbour town of Agios Nikolaos in the east and, the most beautiful town on the island, Chania in the west.

Our visits today include the 13th century Byzantine church of Panagia Kera, which has some of the best preserved wall-paintings in Crete; the excavations at Gournia, the only Minoan town found on the island that offers a first insight into the Minoan culture; and the seaside village of Mochlos, where we enjoy a wonderful lunch by the sea.

The exceptional Heraklion Museum houses the largest collection of Minoan antiquities anywhere in the world and makes an excellent combination with a visit to Crete’s most famous Minoan site Knossos. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: Spinalonga.
Today we enjoy a short but attractive boat ride that takes us from Elounda and across the bay of Elounda to the historic island of Spinalonga, a ‘defensive’ island with a history that spans centuries but also a more recent history, which is now immortalised in the Victoria Hislop novel ' The Island'.
Day 5: Melidoni Cave, Margaritas and Arkadi Monastery.
On our journey to our second hotel, we will visit the Melidoni Cave which has extraordinary rock formations, a tragic history and a beautiful setting; Margaritas, a village of potters, which showcases a folk art of the past, but one that still continues today; and the Arkadi Monastery, an important and precious symbol of Crete’s heroic struggle for freedom against the Ottomans. Check-in to Porto Veneziano Hotel, Chania for a four-night stay.
Day 6: Morning guided tour of Chania.
Having been introduced to some of the delights of this lovely town in the morning, the rest of the day is free for you to explore at leisure.
