Day 1: Arrive independently at the Doubletree by Hilton Lincoln from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, private dinner with wine and an illustrated talk by your host Dr Robert Owen, the official historian of the 617 Squadron Association.
Day 2: VIP day at East Kirkby with taxy ride in a Lancaster bomber.
This morning we head to East Kirkby for a briefing before the tail down taxy runs in a genuine Lancaster bomber. The taxy ride is completely unique and very different to the experience from outside the aircraft. Your lunch is taken with the pilot and the Lancaster ground crew, providing you with another opportunity to ask them any questions and time to talk Lancasters! The VIP day gives you much longer inside the aircraft, boarding approx half an hour before your taxy run for you to look around the first half of the aircraft plus see the other half after your ride. All guests have the opportunity to sit in each position throughout the aircraft and sit in the pilot’s seat. You finish off a memorable day with afternoon tea and homemade cake. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3: The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Exhibition at RAF Coningsby and Thorpe Camp Museum.
This morning we will enjoy a unique Battle of Britain Memorial Flight hangar tour at RAF Coningsby to see the historic aircraft up close and to observe the BBMF technicians working to maintain them in airworthy condition. Next we continue on to Thorpe Camp Museum, the home of the 97, 619, 617 (Dambusters) and 627 Squadrons, which is on the site of RAF Woodhall Spa. A buffet lunch is included here before a visit to the museum which houses a diverse array of exhibitions on Lincolnshire’s associations with aviation. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.30.
Lancaster taxy ride terms and conditions: Taxy riders must be able to board the Lancaster without assistance and be able to exit the aircraft quickly, without any assistance, should there be an emergency. Access to the Lancaster is by five steps with a hand rail. Riders have to be able to climb over the main spar which is 30 inches high and 14 inches deep. There is a step up to this of 12 inches. The head space to climb over the spar in is 30 inches high and 32 inches wide. This area is an arc and the measurements are to the widest and highest points. Without being able to cross the main spar the rider would not be able to access the W/OP, Navigator, cockpit or nose areas of the aircraft. If the Lancaster ground crew deem the rider unable to move around the aircraft with enough ease and sufficient speed to such an extent that they may put themselves and others at risk during an emergency then sadly it would not be possible for them to take part in the taxy ride. If this decision is made by the Centre upon the customers arrival then no refund will be given.
Please watch the following video regarding the access onto the Lancaster.

Please note: The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight exhibition is an operational unit, and we cannot guarantee that all of the Flight's aircraft will be at Coningsby on the day of the visit.
NB: Exact order of excursion may vary according to local conditions and tour managers' discretion.
Please note: Post tour extra nights are available at a supplement.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 30 passengers.

The brochure description was excellent as was our tour manager - a man, with subject knowledge coming out of his ears. I thoroughly enjoyed all we experienced, saw and heard. Being able to taxi in the Lancaster was for me a lifetime experience; and being so close to so many other aircraft was a delight, thank you.
Review by who travelled 27-June-2018
This was an excellent tour that did what it said on the tin. Rob, the tour leader, was an accomplished host, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of his subject matter. He was also happy to converse and to discuss historical questions which was most refreshing and enlightening/ In short, an excellent tour which I will be recommending.
Review by Prince who travelled 27-June-2018
All very good. Car parking at the hotel could have been sorted out better.
Review by Hyde who travelled 27-June-2018
Well organised. Excellent tour manager and most informative.
Review by Morgan who travelled 27-June-2018
The tour exceeded my expectations ,very well organised and our tour manager MrRobert Owen most helpful and knowledgeable. He really did make the whole experience most interesting and exciting.
Review by Ford who travelled 14-August-2018
My only disappointment was that we did not remain at (or return to) RAF Coningsby to see the Lancaster take off. As an active RAF airfield, its flight and timing would have been in the day's flight movements. It was taken out of the hanger clearly preparing for a flight, so it would have added hugely to the experience if we had witnessed it.
Review by Melville who travelled 08-August-2017
Every detail of the tour was very well planned and executed. Tour Manager (Dr Robert Owen) was excellent and very knowledgeable. Only one negative comment and that relates to the group dining provided at the hotel. The food served was disappointing and one of the puddings was so hard that you couldn't get a spoon into it I'm afraid. It would also have been quite helpful if the hotel supplied a menu at the table so that at least you knew what was going to appear in front of you.

Review by Mr Michael Needham who travelled 23-May-2017
This proved a well-organised, most enjoyable three day excursion. Our guide was both knowledgable and interesting, and we had the especially good fortune to be present at RAF Coningsby for a formation airobatics display by four spitfires. This, together with the Lancaster taxy ride, delivered real value for money on what, at first sight, appeared to be an expensive trip. The hotel was comfortable without being exceptional, but was ideally placed for the exploration of beautiful, historic Lincoln.
Review by Mrs David Gordon-Watkins who travelled 23-May-2017
I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. BBMF museum exclusive entrance was better than going in alone, and the Lancaster visit was of course the tour highlight. The two museums were quite similar but still worth the visit.
Review by Mr William Nuttall who travelled 09-August-2016
The tour leader was excellent in every way and everything happened as we were led to expect. I am very happy to recommend this experience to all.
Review by Mr Peter Lutton who travelled 20-September-2016
This was an excellent holiday, which fulfilled a long held ambition of my husband's to go on board a Lancaster. The East Kirby crew were really professional and accommodating, and ensured he got to travel in the bomb aimers position , where his father had served during the war as one of 617 squadron, so this was a really special experience. Our tour guide was informative, knowledgeable, professional and gave us just the right amount of the right type of information. The only down side was the hotel, particularly the food, both at the group meals and breakfast. It was lack lustre, poorly prepared and presented, generally over cooked and served cold. The drinks were expensive, and the cash bar on the second night seemed penny pinching considering the price of the holiday. We did not think the group dinner on the second night added anything to the experience. Apart from this we had a thoroughly good time
Review by Mrs Pauline Evans who travelled 20-September-2016
A most enjoyable break - everything ran like clockwork and Dr Robert Owen was most informative.

This was the first time we had been on an organised tour. It exceeded our expectations and we had an excellent time. We found Rob Owen to be a most engaging guide who clearly knows the material in great depth and was able to balance his presentation to meet a broad range of of knowledge and interest across the group. Additionally he provided all the background useful for the tour very well. We would recommend all the sites visited and could have spent longer at each of them. The enthusiasm and knowledge of the guides at all sites was great to see. In particular we would like to thank all the staff at East Kirkby who were outstanding in their enthusiasm for the Lancaster and more importantly the people and social history of Lincolnshire and Bomber Command.
Review by Mr David Core who travelled 16-August-2016
This was a special present for my husband. He had a most enjoyable time and it was all organised very well. We had a problem at the hotel and I thank you for the partial refund you have made. We would be happy to recommend Travel Editions.

Review by Mr Alan Poulton who travelled 16-August-2016
This was excellent from start to finish. We were particularly impressed by the knowledge and understanding of both tour guides and by the sensitivity shown by Andy Johnson and Liz at East Kirkby to my wife's problems with mobility. This was our first venture of this sort but will not be our last.
Review by Mr Michael Page who travelled 16-August-2016

Only negative was that the Hilton Lincoln did not have opening windows so despite the air conditioning it was unpleasant to sleep in, I would never stay there again.
Review by Mr Geoffrey Glibbery who travelled 16-August-2016
The food in the Doubletree hotel was adequate but not inspiring. Second morning due to a gas failure was chaotic. We had to ask for more cosmetics as they had forgotten to supply during servicing the room, similarly tea and milk not refreshed.
Review by Mr & Mrs C Heywood who travelled 16-August-2016
The Thorpe Camp visit was too long. Food excellent but we felt we were wasting time after a couple of hours. Hotel OK but a pity there was no opening window in the room.
Review by Mrs Prudence Jones who travelled 16-August-2016
Overall v good. Robert and Andy v willing and informative. Only concern was the amount of time spent at some of the museums/venues. This was too long and was hard to fill effectively.
Review by Mr David Stout who travelled 16-August-2016
An action packed two days with Rob Owen heading Group B. Weather was very kind to us which made everything so much easier. Great to get so close to historic aircraft and especially a taxi ride in the Lancaster while other visitors to East Kirby looked on. I would be even happier if a better hotel could be found.
Review by Mr Michael Kitchen who travelled 16-August-2016

Review by Mrs Janet Reason who travelled 09-August-2016
Talk on first evening poor delivery and topic. Much better to have talked about the bomber in the wartime - that's what we were all there for
Review by Dr Ian May who travelled 09-August-2016
Disappointingly I have had to rate the accomodation at Doubletree at Hilton poor because having paid a premium for a double room I had a room with no window. It was like being in an inside cabin, quite claustrophobic. Overall the quality of the hotel was very good and the room and amenities were very good - if only it had a window. I was glad that we were out all day on the tours as staying in the room would have been unpleasant.

An unforgettable experience from start to finish - great hotel, informative and amiable Tour Guide and the visits to RAF Coningsby, Thorpe Camp and East Kirkby were fascinating and rewarding. The highlight, of course, was the taxi ride in Lancaster Bomber. A big "Thank You" to all concerned.

A truly magical experience. Robert Owen was an extremely knowledgeable and congenial host, full of infectious enthusiasm. He was generous with his time and resources and a calm and competent organiser. I would definitely go on another tour with him as host. All the locations we visited had been well chosen and those who looked after us were again very knowledgeable, approachable and generous with their time. The food was delicious and abundant at every turn. Altogether an experience I would recommend to anyone with an interest in the Lancaster or indeed any aspect of Bomber Command. Travel Editions and Robert Owen, thank you!

Review by Mr Philip Harris who travelled 09-August-2016
Robert Owen is an excellent tour manager and made every effort to ensure that we got the most from our Lancaster Bomber experience. The hotel was a bit disappointing, the Wharfside view promised turned out to be a glimpse from a small window and a building site.
Review by Mr David Marjoram who travelled 01-June-2016
The guide, Rob, was very knowledgable. He gave us a lot of detailed information that was interesting. It showed that he was enthusiastic about the subject. The ride in the Lancaster was awesome. My wife arranged the tour for me as an 80ieth birthday present. It was also ineresting to meet one of the others who was 96 and did build Lancasters during the war.
Review by Mrs Johanna Wright who travelled 01-June-2016
We had a wonderful time and our tour manager Robert was very helpful and knowledgeable. Such a humbling time as we heard tales of the courage and bravery of the bomber crews. The Lancaster taxy ride is a never to be forgotten experience. We were with a amazing group of people on the same tour which made it all the more special.
Review by Mrs Margaret Kelly who travelled 01-June-2016
Two gripes: Hotel charging £12 a night for parking was outrageous. The last part of the tour to Thorpe was a museum too far and did not match up to the rest of the tour.
Review by Mr David Coombes who travelled 01-June-2016
Hotel only had us booked in for two nights although I did all our arrangements at the same time. It was hard to stop the closing down of our key ode, the changing of our room etc, once the wheels were in motion.. I had to explain again and again to each person that we were there for three nights. The reception said that the tour comoany had advised them incorrectly.

Review by Mr N Moore who travelled 24-May-2016
An excellent tour that we thoroughly enjoyed---including my two sons, 33 and 30 respectively. Organisation, hotel etc was first class and Robert was an excellent, knowledgeable and informative tour manager who coordinated well with all the participants. Inevitably day 2---BBMF and Thorpe Camp---whilst interesting was somewhat different to the excellently organised visit to East Kirby---and the visit to Thorpe Camp was, in my view, an hour too long. Nevertheless I would highly recommend it and will visit East Kirby again.

Review by Mr James Lambert who travelled 24-May-2016
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and cannot praise our tour guide, Robert Owen enough. His subject knowledge and administration was second to none. The staff at both airfields were so friendly, helpful and the catering excellent. The ride in the Lancaster was so humbling - just thinking of all those airmen who never returned - it must never be allowed to be forgotten. We were disappointed in the hotel as we did have a couple of issues which, although did not spoil the trip, were annoying.

A fantastic and very well organised tour which we both enjoyed. The level of information given on both days was outstanding, delivered by people who obviously have a great passion and interest for what they do. We learned a great deal abut the area around Lincoln and the importance of the RAF during the war. Spending time in the Lancaster bomber itself was amazing and also very humbling imagining the lives of young men and women involved with flying these great aeroplanes. We felt the information given was just right, enough but not too much. Thank you to every one who made this tour great fun and we certainly look forward to doing another similar tour in the future.

Review by Mr Bert May who travelled 11-August-2015
We journeyed by car, and the directions given were very clear. Special mention goes to Robert Owen who was excellent, very well informed, and who went out of his way to find extra information when requested. Also the tour guide, Sean Taylor at East Kirkby, who was exceptional, making the "brief" both moving and very interesting. He also added to the Lancaster Taxi Ride experience with his expert knowledge and individual assistance. Nothing was too much trouble for either Robert or Sean. Thank you for a truly memorable trip.

The whole trip was fantastic. I was with Robert Owen, & he was approachable, friendly & had a vast depth of knowledge on the subjct. The only thing that might need amending was the amount of time at Thorpe Camp - the camp itself was very good, but the time there was slightly too long - however, the extremely hot conditions may have had something to do with that feeling. Overall, first class & I will definitely recomend Travel Editions trips to people in the future. Thanks for a great time.
