Day 2: University of Leeds Art Audio Trail, Salts Mill, Leeds Art Gallery and Henry Moore Institute.
This morning we enjoy an art audio trail. Around 1.5 miles long, the trail celebrates the University of Leeds’ collection of public art, and includes 21 sculptures, friezes and installations across the University estate. At each stop on the trail, listen to insights from experts, academics and the artists themselves. This afternoon we will visit Saltaire, a model village built by Victorian textile manufacturer Titus Salt for his employees, with its permanent collection of Hockney paintings, prints and photographs from 1960s to the present day. We return to Leeds in the afternoon with a visit to Leeds Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute. This evening there will be a lecture by Maddie Hewitson and dinner at the hotel.
Day 3: Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Hepworth Wakefield.
Today begins with a wander around the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (Museum of the Year in 2014) which holds 60 spectacular outdoor pieces, including works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Anthony Gormley and Andy Goldsworthy as well as indoor changing exhibitions. Our next visit is to the Hepworth Wakefield, which, on its opening in 2011, was awarded the British Design Award and was the Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2017. The gallery is home to more than 50 works by Barbara Hepworth from her earliest carvings to the ambitious pieces of public art that she created after the war. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.00.

The hotel was not of the standard expected; food was not very good especially at breakfast. It seemed poorly managed though indiviual staff were doing their best and when there was a leak from the room above into mine on the second evening I was quickly moved to a superior room. In fact I had reported signs of a leak on the ceiling that morning and I assume it wasn't investigated. A small criticism, but important: the hotel decor was very dark and the overall impression gloomy, and many rooms had windows overlooking the atrium, itself a bleak and empty area, so were doubly gloomy. That said, the hotel was very well placed in the city centre. The holiday overall was superb, packed with a great variety places and artistic works to see and well organised. Maddie was an excellent leader and lecturer.

This was a really energising weekend, with a good range of things to see and above all, the really outstanding leadership of our tour guide, Maddie Hewitson. She shared her wide knowledge of C20th century art and sculpture and its historical and local context in a very accessible way, and enthused us all. My only suggestion would be that the 'whisperer' devices which enabled us to hear Maddie so well on Day 1 should be held over to Day 2, to ensure that her commentary on the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is also fully audible.

This was an excellent holiday all the trips and the talks were very good and I enjoyed it very much. The only criticism I have was for the food in the hotel. The breakfast was ok, but the evening meals were very poor. The meat was very tough and difficult to cut and eat. There was no choice and I was pleased that on my extra night I could go out to eat somewhere different. The staff in the restaurant were good, friendly and worked very hard, it just was that the food was not good quality.

The enthusiasm of the lecturer was contagious and resulted in a most enjoyable tour with everyone responding and identifying with the topics discussed
Review by Anonymous who travelled 23-September-2022
I did not receive the final documents for this tour. The hotel food was grim, tough meat, tasteless vegetables stodgy puddings. Even the breakfast was poor - stodgy tasteless pastries, slow toaster, unappetising presentation. By contrast the input from the Expert" Peter was wonderful, inspiring and informative. His enthusiasm carried the day . The "Tetley" ciach was rather antiquated and it was not surprising it broke down, but thr management of this m ishap as with the rest of the tour was excellent.
Review by Millar who travelled 23-September-2022
Itinerary excellent. Knowledgeable and interesting lecturer but too much time was taken up on site by long unnecessary explanations, leaving reduced time to enjoy the exhibits. The tour manager seemed ti have difficulty organizing and checking boarding, which often resulted in delays..

Review by Ratchford who travelled 22-July-2022
I enjoyed the trip very much and our guide, Maddie, was excellent...knowledgable and enthusiastic. Everything was very well organised. The highlight visit for me was Salt's Mill. If I could tweak the programme I would leave out the Henry Moore Institute and spend that time instead in the Leeds Art Gallery, which I didn't have time to see all of. The hotel let the trip down. The food was mediocre and I had to change rooms because of very loud music coming up from outside on the first night. The second room's air conditioning wasn't working properly and I had two nights of the racket of the AC unit but no cool air.

A special mention needs to go to Maddie whose enthusiasm and knowledge ensured we came away having been totally inspired. Thank you.

I would have liked more time at Saltaire, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Hepworth wakefield and less at the smaller venues. I was disappointed that the bulk of the Hepworth collection wasn't at Wakefield when we visited as this was the main reason I came on the trip. But I enjoyed seeing the building and garden.

This was my first trip with Travel Editions. I enjoyed the tour and the company of fellow travellers. The Hilton Hotel was adequate - it is a little “tired”. It is difficult for guides in Covid times but a little more info on the layout of the Sculpture Park, for example, would have been helpful. Give out maps the evening before, perhaps, and include in Powerpoint presentation. Similarly for Saltaire.

Very much enjoyed Maddie Boden's guiding. Fluent, knowledgeable, enthusisastic. We were lucky with the weather too. A cold, wet day at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park would have been no fun. The coach worked well for all our visits.
Review by Barton who travelled 23-July-2021
We're really glad the tour went ahead and felt the organisation was excellent. The hotel reception and breakfast arrangements were fine but we felt our room was not up to standard. The lighting in the room and bathroom was very poor, it was rather tatty and very noisy. The noise from the railway station, the traffic and the (cooling?) fans on the roof below was certainly a problem and kept us awake. The safe didn't work and we reported this to reception. Unfortunately it wasn't possible for a maintenance engineer to look at the fault before we left for the day's tour so we didn't pursue this. We didn't report the problems with the room to Maddie the tour guide as we were just pleased that the tour went ahead and that the safety measures in place made us feel comfortable.
Review by Anonymous who travelled 23-July-2021
The hotel was v. noisy and we wondered if it might be better to try and book weekdays instead of w/e's when full of parties. Sleep interrupted both nights. Unable to book pool w.o. paying £10 cancellation charge. Carpark v. narrow and a nightmare to drive round. The meals were v.limited, there was no choice, it was either one or the other. We did not realise we could not have the alternative option(vegetarian) if we had not stated this beforehand. It was chicken, pot. and gravy one night, and pork pot. and gravy the second. I asked for the veg. option and they said they had limited nos.

The hotel staff were brilliant especially Chef Craig. My wife has ulcerative colitis so has to be very careful with food. Craig came to see us, noted exactly what was needed and served it personally. On his day off he left instructions with his staff to continue his good work. It made our visit. The tour was excellent too!
Review by Cook who travelled 26-July-2019
Flight/Train/Ferry is not applicable, as I organised my own. Gerald was a delight, and his commentary illuminating. The sites we visited were very interesting and together gave a coherent picture of C20 Yorkshire art.
Review by Churchman who travelled 26-July-2019
Gerald was superb as host, tour manager. His knowledge is outstanding, and he gave unstinted time with us while guiding us around each of the venues. I believe he has suggested that Cartwright Hall be taken out of the tour. I fully agree with this as the venue, although suitable for school visits, it lacks 'adult friendly' facilities. more time in Salts Mill and Leeds would be good.
Review by Anonymous who travelled 26-July-2019
Gerald, the expert tour guide was excellent in terms of his historical and art knowledge and in his subtle but firm organisation to make sure everything ran smoothly on the day. Hotel well selected in terms of location near the station making travel easy. Whilst there was a hitch on check-in (giving me the key for an occupied room) the receptionist immediately upgraded me and offered a drinks voucher. Spa was a relaxing bonus on arrival.

This is a very good & informative tour. The guides were excellent. We would suggest more time in Saltaire. This was the only visit that we felt rushed . At least an additional 1.5 hours free time to explore the gallery and the village would have been welcome. Also, we could have had the option of making our own way back to the hotel from the Leeds Art Gallery. Thank you

Overall this fulfilled my expectations. The group was very pleasant and made the whole experience a fuller and more interesting one. The enthusiasm and brilliant communication skills of the tour manager were exemplary. The pre experience of members of the group was very wide, and the erudition and wide experience of the lecturer were admirable, and his thoughtfulness for the care of the members was kind and efficient. However, as someone who was fairly engaged experienced in the field I found the heavy amount of input off putting. Times have moved on and the male gaze should no longer dominate presentations. There is a need for open ended questioning and responses. A lighter touch. A gentler expectation. I think that this feed back form is, of necessity, rather blunt , and does not allow for a more nuanced response!
Review by Anonymous who travelled 17-May-2019
The venues visited were exactly the reason i came on the tour, and I saw art works which were memorable and made the whole trip worthwhile, especially YSP and The Hepworth. Saturday however was too crammed, Cartwright Hall was too much to take in after the scale of Salts Mill. 14.00hrs in Leeds was too late in the day for lunch. There is a limit to how much visual information someone can absorb in one day! The commentaries were informed but sometimes were just the personal preferences of the speaker. Although it was thought provoking much of the ability to see the art work was overwhelmed by the constant amount of verbal explanation. The hotel facilities were good, although the dinners provided were poor.

We very much enjoyed the tour and found both guides very knowledgable. The programme was very full of interest and we saw a lot. We were however disappointed with the Hilton Hotel in Leeds. The vegetarian options were very poor and unimaginative. The menu on the first night consisted of a salad of shredded lettuce, croutons and a tiny amount of grated cheese followed by cheese filled pasta in cheese sauce. We also had problems with the ensuite.Tthe extractor fam was not working and the door squeeked horrendously when opened. We informed reception who assured us that they would attend to it, however nothing was done.

My only comment or slight complaint is that the tour details said the tour would probably finish between 5:45 and 6:30. In fact, we were back in Leeds at 5 pm. I had booked a 7:45 train (to be on the safe side) back to London and had to wait around for 2 hours.

A superb tour manager. He was very caring, professional, listened to people and knowledgeable.
Review by Ms G McQuay who travelled 14-October-2016
Most enjoyable especially as Gerald rearranged things so we went round the Sculpture park in the sunshine. That, and the Hepworth and Salt Mill were my interests.Would have liked more of Saltaire .
Review by Miss Dilys Ward who travelled 14-October-2016
An excellent tour; enjoyed all the visits and Gerald's excellent talks. There was no Tour Manager which we not explained.did a lot in the time available.

Admin few office hitches
Review by Mr J Robertson who travelled 14-October-2016
The only problem was the Saturday night meal. The meal was adequate but the waitress did not offer a wine list, we were requested to buy our own drinks at the bar. A very ordinary bottle of red wine cost £30, my husband had to queue, buy the bottle and carry the wine glasses to the table. This was in a high class hotel and was not satisfactory. Otherwise it was an excellent tour, which we much enjoyed.
Review by Mrs Angela Wilson who travelled 14-October-2016
I enjoyed the weekend, first time I'd travelled with your company. Rather early starts for me and I didn't enjoy the Museum of Media or the Henry Moore Institute. I would have preferred to concentrate on Hockney, Moore and Hepworth and have slightly shorter days.
Review by Mrs Andrea Haddad who travelled 14-October-2016
Gerard Deslandes was very interesting and made the tour come alive for me. I will look out another of his tours for the future, maybe Sicily.....
Review by Mrs Angela Diamond who travelled 14-October-2016
Well organised tours with enough free time. Central hotel so city centre was within walking range
Review by Mrs J Hogan who travelled 14-October-2016
I enjoyed the content of the tour. The hotel was rather too close to Leeds station. Room good standard but breakfast let down by dirty cutlery and plate (reported to management).
Review by Ms Ann Douthwaite who travelled 30-September-2016
I enjoyed it and I imagine Temple Newsom was included because Leeds Art Gallery was closed. I think it was stretching it a bit to include it in a visit to 20th. century Yorkshire Art. Gerald was excellent.
Review by Ms Susan Ryall who travelled 30-September-2016
a mixed bag that didnt live up to description of 20th century art, eg media museum and temple newsum could easily have been deleted; and henry moore institute exhibition at end of long weekend was too much. We appreciate that some of this was due to closure of leeds art gallery, but longer at sculpture park or free time in leeds would have been better for us. And more time at saltaire would have been better than trip to media museum

Travel Editions feedback:
Thank you for your comments and yes Leeds Art gallery is closed currently for essential repairs to its Victorian roof. The itinerary has been changed for 2017 and can be viewed on our website.
A number of problems with very noisy neighbours at night in the Hilton Hotel, unfortunately, as coincided with Leeds Pop Festival. Trip very enjoyable, particularly, Sculpture Park. Would have liked longer at Saltaire to explore its' history.

Made own travel arrangements so marked "poor" just to complete form. Everything about this tour was excellent not only leaders, tour content but also weather and scenery. Thank you.

A big Thank you to Gerald and Karen for a wonderful trip around the art of Yorkshire! It was my first time with Travel Editions, but it will not be the last! I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the trip, which was very well organised. Gerald was an extremely interesting guide and Karen was a caring Tour Manager. Well done and thank you once again!
Review by Mrs Yvonne Richards who travelled 26-August-2016
Our expert guide, Gerald Deslandes, was excellent. His lectures were well researched and very interesting and his information and guidance on site most impressive. Our tour manager, Karen Blackwell, was charming, friendly and efficient and the tour was very enjoyable and well organised. I am looking forward to my next holiday with you.
Review by Mrs Valerie Bowser who travelled 26-August-2016
An excellent visit to Yorkshire art. First class lecturer and tour guide with very good service from our tour manager. Few criticisms but perhaps too much was packed into the week-end - the final trip to the Henry Moore Institute could have been omitted and more time spent elsewhere. Hotel rooms were fine, breakfasts OK but dinners could have been of a higher standard. My partner has a disability and the provision of support was first class. The free use of a motorised scooter at Yorks Sculpture Park made all the difference and enabled her to see so much more.
Review by Mr Richard Buswell who travelled 26-August-2016
The lecturer/guide was excellent and very well informed not only on 20th Century Art but on a wide range of topics. We found the venues inspiring although there were too many over the two days and it would have been better to concentrate on Hockney, Moore and Hepworth. The tour leader was very good and all was well organised. The hotel was 'ordinary' but we appreciate that it was near the main rail station. We flew to Leeds Bradford Airport which was very easy - directions however less than easy and we ended up at the Hilton Doubletree. A very enjoyable weekend.
Review by Mrs Ursula Starkie who travelled 26-August-2016
Overall an excellent and well-planned trip. ~Accompanying lecturer, Gabriel, had an unfortunate speech impediment which was distracting, especially as he was so determined to impart his very considerable knowledge at great length. Overall, though, a very good weekend. Bus and driver excellent. Very friendly and helpful hotel staff. Good itinerary.
Review by Ms Avery Nelson who travelled 02-October-2015
Slight cock-up re: Leeds Art Gallery - this could have been avoided if people had done their homework.
Review by Mrs Clare Platts who travelled 02-October-2015
more time @ prime sites,Saltaire, YSP, Hepworth Museum. Scrap Media Centre-Poor and a waste of valuable travelling time. Great shame re. closure of Leeds Art Gallery on our date. Final day seemed rushed-weather was fantastic so more time @ YSP would have been amazing. maybe better use of time but overall Gerard and Gabriel's input were invaluable. Would certainly look for Gerard in another tour.

The dinners at the hotel were just satisfactory The breakfasts were very good.
Review by Miss Jean Jones who travelled 02-October-2015
After our disappointment at the accommodation on the PR Oxford tour we were very impressed with the Crowne Plaza Leeds and the tour was excellent, expertly managed and explained by Gerald and Gabriel. We were also very lucky with the weather at the YSP.
Review by Mr Christopher Garner who travelled 02-October-2015
Gerald Deslandes was an outstanding guide and very good with people. All the visits were excellent. Gabriel, although knowledgeable, was not so easy to listen to and once I found myself wandering off away from the party to look at some art on my own. I learned a lot on the various visits and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park visit was inspirational.
Review by Burrows who travelled 28-August-2015
Could have skipped Bradford completely and spent more time at Saltair. Didn't have the opportunity to explore the town, shops, church etc...and the Media Museum really didn't add anything to the trip. Two sites in one day are enough!! Lectures and guides were excellent, but difficult to hear lecturer. It would definitely have helped to have the sound amplified, considering the age of the audience. Really excellent sites to see....Would have been happy to have a whole day at the Sculpture Park, as well...so could envision a three day visit to cover Moore, Hepworth, and Hockney. Guides were excellent, but had to cover so much in so little time.

Review by Mr Roger Cornwell who travelled 28-August-2015
We felt that the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Leeds had a number of faults. The bedrooms were unbearably hot and the only way to cool them was to switch the air-conditioning before going out and leave it on. The room would sometimes heat up again during the night and need the air-conditioning again, the noise of which kept us awake. At the evening meal there was no way we could order drinks and had to go up to the bar on the floor above and carry them down. The shower in the bathroom was so tethered that it only showered the taps underneath, making the job of getting any water on oneself very difficult. Prices of drinks were astronomical and we felt there was no justification for quite such high ones.

Gerald Deslandes is an excellent speaker and was unfailingly courteous and patient with everyone. (There were several people who had difficulty moving around.) Gabriel Williams was also helpful but could probably benefit from some voice training. The hotel was fine although the dinners were disappointing. Altogether an excellent and enjoyable weekend.
Review by Ms Ylva French who travelled 28-August-2015
Crown Plaza convenient for Motorway and Rail Station, room large and clean, shower poor, food dreadful - boring and vegetables undercooked. Gerald Deslandes first class - clearly expert, amusing, attentive Gabriel Williams very good, interesting material, delivery technique could do with a little polish to be excellent but still very good. As attentive as Gerald. Well chosen itinerary. Make sure you hang on to these two people!

Venues on the Saturday were too rushed. Would have been good to spend more time at Saltaire as there is so much to see. Unnecessary visit to National Media Museum as it seemed to have little or nothing in common with the rest of the tour. Tour manager Gerald was excellent, very helpful and informative.
Review by Ms Vivien Heffernan who travelled 28-August-2015
Talk on Moore and Hepworth was due to start at 6.30. TM waited until everyone there before starting so didn't begin till 6.45. Still finished at 7.30 so we were short changed. Should have started on time and let latecomers miss some, instead of the keen ones.
Review by Mr Donald Webster who travelled 12-June-2015
The tour itself was excellent with a very knowledgeable and likeable leader. The hotel was somewhat disappointing in that I was repeatedly woken up by noisy 'neighbours', an early morning call was late and the shower attachment came away in my hand - but overall an extremely good trip.
Review by Mrs Pat Stone who travelled 12-June-2015
Gerald was an inspirational guide with considerable knowledge. Gabriel was weaker in his delivery although knowledgeable. He needs to be briefer in his responses. Well balanced programme. Wonderful time albeit with Yorkshire rain and mist.
Review by Mrs Sylvia Oram who travelled 12-June-2015
This was an excellent holiday. It was well planned, well organised and well led. Gerald and Gabriel were very knowledgeable and helped me to understand much more about modern art than I would have thought possible in a weekend.

Review by Mrs D Jones who travelled 10-April-2015
Gerald & Gabriel were very knowledgeable. We learned a great deal about Hockney & sculpture in particular. They also made it fun & were patient & calm with emergencies & the individual needs of group members. We would like to have spent more time walking around the Yorkshire Sculpture Park: the weather & schedule made this difficult. All the venues were fascinating & we would love to return for a more leisurely exploration.
Review by Mrs Catherine Baker who travelled 10-April-2015
My only reason for giving admin a'good' rather than excellent is that it would have been helpful for my friend to have all the literature regarding the weekend instead of my having to photo a copy for her but apart from that everything was extremely well organised. Thank you for a lovely weekend Connie Brown
Review by Mrs C Brown who travelled 10-April-2015
Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. I did have to complain to the hotel about the heating . I think we all had to put air con on in room. The private dinner was a little disappointing. No choice and we hadn't been informed beforehand of the meal.
