A stunning region that, even in August, is serene and temperate
Peace and solitude – on many of the walks you might not see a soul except the occasional golden eagle or roe deer!
Being based mostly at high altitude makes August the perfect month climatically for walking in this region
This twin centre tour combines a stay in the lush southern region of the Haute Garonne in France, characterised by pretty villages, rich forests and lush agricultural land, that contrasts perfectly with the more rugged Spanish side of the border - into Catalonia – which offers verdant valleys, higher mountains, a more arid landscape and bountiful wildlife.
Level of walking
This is a tour that visits two sides of the central Pyrenees in a week. We begin in France in the Luchonais and finish in Spain in the region of Sobira Pallars, so there is a great cultural richness in the tour itself including change of language, customs, and landscapes. In both areas we walk for an average of 5 hours per day covering a minimum of 8kms on any one day and a maximum of 16kms. The terrain varies dramatically and changes everyday. We walk through forest and over mountain plains on dirt roads, ancient footpaths, wide goat paths and 'off-the-beaten-track' tracks. Some days there are ascents and descents of up to 500 meters. For most of the week our paths are located at high altitude, between 900 and 2000 meters, which means the climate is usually very pleasant for walking at this time of year.
The guide is Jonathan Peat. Jonathan has been guiding walks in SW France, his adopted home for more than 20 years, and also Greece. His tours in Greece have proved enormously popular and our expanded range of tours in France and Greece have been tried and tested by him for many years – his philosophy remains the same wherever he guides: to introduce the visitor to the unspoilt, beautiful nature of a region, and its authentic culture.

The areas visited were beautiful and the walks great. Both hotels were comfortable and the staff were friendly and efficient. There was one evening meal in France, at a restaurant. It was good, with plenty of choice. The evening meals at the Spanish hotel were fantastic as were the home-made picnic lunches in France. The leader, Jonathan, was terrific - a mine of information and a wise source of encouragement. His assistant, Philip, was also very helpful and the other guests were great company. Overall, a superb holiday, only spoiled by a very delayed flight home. This was not Travel Editions' fault, of course, and they are looking into getting compensation for us from the airline - a nice touch!

Excellent tour manager - Jonathan Peak - provided a wonderful experience that went way beyond our expectations. Everything that he arranged, sometimes at a few minutes notice, was done with tact, respect and consideration of all participants.
Review by Stebbing who travelled 17-August-2018
Breathtaking scenery; super challenging walks; excellent administration by Jonathan; hotels and meals good especially the mid walk picnics - the best I've ever had on a walking holiday. The only downside was the 6 hour flight delay by easyJet on the return from Toulouse resulting in my missing my onward flight home from Gatwick and the resulting hassle
Review by Wragg who travelled 17-August-2018
Jonathan and Philip were masterly in the choice of walks and accommodation and in their organisation/logistics - and they were excellent personable hosts. This was one of the best walking holidays ever. We had a brilliant time and can only say that it should have run for 10 days as the travelling takes a whole day both out and back. EasyJet let us down badly - late going out and 6 hours late getting us home. Jenny and Marius

A fantastic leader showing us beautiful scenery under cloudless skies with delicious picnics and evening meals and excellent company resulted in a most enjoyable holiday.
Review by Mrs M Wellfair who travelled 21-August-2016
We very much enjoyed the holiday. Both hotels very good, especially Poldo. It's the second time we've been with Jonathan, and he was just as superb this time as last. Sensitive, thoughtful, inspiring, easy to get on with, one runs out of superlatives. We'll certainly go with him again if we stay fit. Thanks!
Review by Mr Michael Bateson who travelled 21-August-2016
This was so much more than a walking holiday. With Jonathan Peat as an excellent guide and tour manager the walks were tailored to the abilities of the group; his in-depth knowledge of the area, its fauna and flora, its history and cultural traditions enriched each walk. The hotels chosen were clean, comfortable and friendly, the former providing an excellent breakfast, the latter excellent cuisine for the evening meals.

Jonathan is the best tour leader!
