Art Nouveau and Art Deco in Lille and Antwerp

Day 1: Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Lille and transfer by coach to hotel for check in for three-night stay. Afternoon walking tour of central Lille. Welcome reception, lectures 'A Line is a Force - Artistic and cultural differences in Art Nouveau, art, design and architecture' and 'Art Nouveau in Belgium' and dinner (choice at each course) with wine at the atmospheric Art Nouveau Brasserie de la Paix, located three minutes' walk from the hotel.

Day 2: Morning walking tour of the Art Nouveau houses of Lille, including the exterior of the beautiful Maison Colliot, followed by a visit to the Villa Cavrois, re-opened in June 2015 after refurbishment. This afternoon visit the hidden gem that is La Piscine Museum at the former textile town of Roubaix, set in a stunning Art Deco swimming pool, whose contents include sample fabric books from the Art Nouveau period. Enjoy a tour to lovely Tournai and Horta's Art Nouveau Musee des Beaux Arts, designed in 1904. Welcome drink, lecture 'Art Deco - An international style in context' and dinner with wine at the Brasserie de la Paix.

Day 3: Full day excursion to the historic Belgian city of Antwerp. Antwerp has a strong artistic heritage, exhibited in its fine museums and churches, and is particularly famed as the birthplace of Rubens. At the end of the 19th century, the city, considered conservative by some, embraced Art Nouveau with the construction of the ‘golden triangle’ neighbourhood in Zurenborg and a number of other extraordinary buildings throughout the city, including the Art Nouveau station, regarded by some as the most beautiful station in the world.

Day 4: Morning visit (on foot) to the superb collection at Lille's Musee des Beaux Arts, the 2nd largest collection in France after the Louvre. Time allowed for lunch before transferring to the station for return Eurostar to Ebbsfleet or St Pancras.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion
