Baroque Sicily Tour

7 nights starting from
£1425

• Charming Modica – our base for seven nights
• Siracusa – dating back to Greek times
• Wonderful Baroque architecture – in Ragusa and Noto
• Lovely villages and towns – the fishing village of Marzememi and UNESCO gem Scicli are delightful
• A day in the foosteps of TV detective, Montalbano

This wonderful tour to Sicily focusses on the Baroque towns and villages of the Southeast corner of Sicily, popularised in recent years by the atmospheric TV series Inspector Montalbano. The area is rich in artistic and architectural heritage as well as charming piazzas and lanes reminiscent of an age gone by, that also happen to serve as settings for the TV series. The Baroque style is seen throughout this region of Sicily and we will witness the impressive buildings in the towns of Noto, Ragusa, Siracusa and Scicli. Our base for the tour, Modica, is a charming town with its beautiful baroque architecture and the added bonus of being famous for its chocolate.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Fly from London Gatwick to Catania.
On arrival, transfer from Catania airport to Modica for check in to the hotel for seven-night stay on bed and breakfast basis. Welcome drink on arrival at the hotel.

Day 2: Morning tour of Modica.
Comprised of two separate areas “Alta” (high) and Bassa (low), connected by flights of steps, Modica offers a wealth of sights and is the ideal central base from which to explore this stunning region of the Mediterranean’s largest island. Highlights include the Duomo, a remarkable example of Sicilian Baroque, Santa Maria di Betlem, San Pietro, the main street, Corso Umberto I lined with impressive palazzi, churches and the Corso Regina Margherita in the Alta district. We will have a guided walking tour of the town including a chocolate tasting for which Modica is famous. The rest of the afternoon is at lesiure for you to explore independently.

Day 3: Full day to the capital of the south east of Sicily, Siracusa, dating back some 27 centuries.
This morning we will have a guided walking tour and visit the Neapolis archaeological area, including the impressive Greek amphitheatre and the ‘Ear of Dionysus’. There will also be free time to wander around the mystical peninsular of Ortigia, surrounded on all sides by the Mediterranean, with a wealth of sights from the Roman era through to the Baroque.

Day 4: Full day tour to the stunning baroque centre of Ibla di Ragusa, located in a dramatic canyon.
Also divided into two distinct districts – Ragusa, built in Baroque style after the 1693 earthquake, and much older Ibla. We will have a guided walking tour and see highlights of the town including the Duomo, Archaeological Museum plus many more gorgeous churches, piazzas and streets. Many scenes from Montalbano were filmed here.

Day 5: Full day to Noto and Marzememi.
Rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, Noto boasts magnificent Baroque architecture, unique in Sicily. Highlights include the cathedral, Palazzo Ducezio, Palazzo Trigona and churches of Santa Chiara and San Carlo al Corso. We will enjoy a guided walking tour and there will also be time to explore the streets independently which are perfect for a leisurely stroll amongst the stunning architecture. Continue down the south east coast to the delightful fishing village of Marzememi with its whitewashed houses and lovely waterfront location.

Day 6: Day at leisure to explore Modica.

Day 7: In the tracks of Montalbano.
Today our focus turns to Montalbano as we visit the small UNESCO gem of Scicli, where Montalbano’s police station is located. Admire the architecture and many small baroque churches in Scicli’s narrow lanes. This afternoon is spent along the lovely southern coastline with a stop at Montalbano’s house in Punta Secca.

Day 8: Transfer from Modica to Catania airport for the return flight to London Gatwick.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

Please note this tour has been classed as 'Challenging' due to the nature of the area and a lot of the towns being divided into an upper and lower section with many stairs/steps between them. The tour also includes four guided walking tours with a local guide, where the group need to keep together at the same speed.

Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 35 passengers.

Despite poor weather, and a very delayed return journey due to the aircraft having a technical fault, we enjoyed the holiday very much. We had never been to Sicily before and are now determined to return. The sightseeing tours were well pitched and our guide Auri was excellent. Our coach driver Orazio was also extremely competent.

We were kept hanging round Modica airport on arrival for about an hour waiting for a Mrs Cooper. It turned out Mrs Cooper had cancelled several days earlier but this had not been communicated by Travel Editions to our tour leader or the hotel. As a result we were late getting to the hotel and had quite a rush to be in time for the welcome drinks. Similarly when coming back the tour leader had not been told the flight had been put back from 12.20 to 1.20 and so we had breakfast at 5.45am, left the hotel at 7am and got to the airport at 9.30 am but the check in desk for our flight did not open till 11am. As a result our group which included 90 year olds was left standing in a queue with nothing to do for an hour and a half. Correct me if I'm wrong but I get the impression the admin was a bit slipshod here. More attention should have been paid to communicating with the tour leader.

My second tour with Travel Editions did not quite live up to The Road Less Travelled (northern Greece) which was outstanding; however, it was still very enjoyable. The coach driver Orazio was excellent in every way. Guides were very good on the whole although they say far, far too much and gabble; for some people on the tour the guides were not easy to hear because they didn't allow people to catch up before they spouted off again. To my mind, the Hotel Principe D'Aragona in Modica was not really 4*, although it was very pleasant - more like 3 or 3*, since the rooms (although absolutely spotless) were a little bashed about (wallcoverings for example), the windows badly needed cleaning and the curtains were very dirty. Breakfast was excellent every morning served by two real stars. I was puzzled to be offered 'extra' tours without notice after we arrived in Modica - a day out, an evening meal; it might be an idea to alert people to the possibilities beforehand. This all sounds critical perhaps but the holiday really was very enjoyable.

Administration was excellent apart from the return flight when the tour guide was passed the wrong flight times which caused us to have a very early breakfast and departure from the hotel and then an extended wait at the airport check-in desk before this was opened. Revised flight times should have been communicated to the Tour Manager. Notwithstanding this had a most enjoyable holiday and would recommend your company..

Accommodation satisfactory but hotel bedrooms a little tired - swimming pool tiles needing attention and too shallow for most adults to swim. Breakfast pastries lovely but disappointing squash (as opposed to juice) and fresh fruit offer variable. Tour manager efficient and well-informed if a little officious and occasionally patronising. Excursions excellent with exception of optional farewell dinner at local 'osteria' which was more like a works canteen with poor food compared with similar dishes eaten elsewhere. Certainly did not justify 35 euros per head and would therefore not recommend. Overall impression excellent as we did not let these limited issues spoil an otherwise great holiday - would certainly holiday with Travel Editions again. PS loved the Inspector Montelbano content!

I thought this was a wonderful holiday and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only issues arose when we arrived at/ departed Catania Airport where things were somewhat chaotic. For example the Tour Manager didn’t know our plane had arrived because the arrivals board was not accurate - which was stressful for him and us.I did feel that the group size was a bit large and 25 would have been more manageable for the Tour Manager. Modica was a superb base and the hotel was wonderful - best breakfasts ever. It was so easy to find good places to eat in the evening too. Excellent local guides and a wonderful experience.

A very enjoyable tour which fully lived up to expectations. Modica was a lovely place to be based, and the hotel was well located with easy access to all the main sights there. All the excursions, both included and optional extras, were worthwhile, with excellent local guides for Modica, Ragusa, Syracusa and Noto. A couple of suggestions to improve the experience. - it would have been helpful to know in advance what optional excursions were on offer, as these had to be paid for in cash and I hadn't brought enough with me - for the day at Scicli and Punta Secca, it would be better to go to Scicli first, as by the time we arrived it was lunchtime and most of the churches were closing for the afternoon. Also, there was only really time there for either lunch or sightseeing not both.

Not keen on EasyJet. We were not able to do the boarding pass immediately, so when we did, we couldn't have seats together. The hotel was disappointing. The staff were lovely and the breakfasts were great, but our room was hot and poky. We got lots of bruises from the bed fittings. Our coach driver, Orazio, was brilliant. How he drove down the lanes to the farm on the Saturday evening I don't know. It was good to have the Vox boxes. They make it so much easier to hear the guide. We didn't understand why we couldn't have them for Wednesday and Thursday, as it would have meant we could hear Tullio without having to canter after him, which wasn't easy on the beach at Isola delle Correnti. We enjoyed the Montalbano places, especially the police station. However, it seemed a bit much that the entrance fee there wasn't included in the holiday. The female local guides were good, especially Sabrina. Didn't think much of the man who took us round Syracuse. He was too busy trying to be funny, although his botanical information was very welcome. And he said that he went regularly to the cathedral in Ortygia, and yet he didn't know that the new priest had changed the opening hours. I was very disappointed, as the cathedral was one of the things I particularly wanted to see. It was interesting that Marzememi had been important in the tuna trade, but it wasn't worth a visit - not much to see and devoted to selling things. The optional visit to the farm with Modicana cows was lovely, and a very nice meal. The optional final meal was a great disappointment - a strange menu.

I loved this tour! Having watched successive series of Inspector Montalbano on BBC4 in recent years, it was a treat to be given the opportunity to travel to the area of Sicily where the programme is based and filmed. However, there was far more to this tour than that. I enjoyed visiting the working landscape of the south-east of Sicily and visiting the different cities as well as the coastal fishing villages and experiencing how people lived and worked. The local guides that showed us around each of the cities (Modica, Syracuse, Ragusa, Noto) were excellent and conveyed their enthusiasm easily to the group. Modica was an excellent base for the tour. The hotel was conveniently situated, the rooms comfortable and the staff very friendly. In particular, I have to praise the quality of the breakfast on offer each morning - I really appreciated the trouble the breakfast room staff took to give us a taste of Sicily by freshly preparing local delicacies (both hot and cold) for breakfast. Finally, I must mention the tour manager Tullio who made every effort to ensure that everyone in the group enjoyed their holiday from the moment he first met us at the airport. I appreciated (and took advantage of) the optional excursions he offered us - two opportunities to dine out in the evening and a fascinating daytrip along the south-east coast on Friday allowing us to learn about refugees attempting to enter Europe through Sicily, allied force landings on the beaches there during World War II and finally, after an excellent lunch at a fishing port, watching the local fishing fleet arrive and sell their catch at the fish market. In a bid to improve future tours, I'd suggest that some more time is spent in each of the cities visited. Occasionally, I had to choose between having lunch and doing some independent sightseeing. It was well worth sacrificing lunch on the visit to Noto to be able to climb the tower of the church of Santa Chiara to enjoy the panoramic views of the city. Well done, Travel Editions, for offering a tour of this part of Sicily that is quite distinct from other tours of Sicily offered by your competitors.

Travel marked “poor” because conditions at Catania airport were appalling. Sightseeing marked down because Siracusa was an ordeal: squads of school kids meant our guide was often inaudible - an earpiece system would have been good. Admin: would it be possible to send out EasyJet booking nos earlier? Rather last minute arrival of these details meant the best seats were already booked when we logged on to check in. All in all, an interesting and enjoyable holiday, but perhaps not our best TE trip ever. PS - the hotel breakfasts WERE the best ever!

There was clearly a mix up with the tour "manager" so we did not get the service/local info we have become used to. Could you possibly persuade the bus guides & the walking tour guides to be more selective in the info that they bombard us with? It becomes too much 7 virtually everybody felt the same. Perhaps they could ask us what we are interested in? The radio/whisper set are a great innovation but, again, all the walking tour guides over-ran their time thus reducing our free time. We left most of the walking tours before the end.

The emphasis on Inspector Montalbano seemed overdone for those of us with no particular interest in this programme. The visit to the brick yard on the way back from Noto was a complete waste of time. Street maps for the towns visited would have been helpful

I enjoyed the holiday very much. My negative comment about admin is for several reasons. Twice I had phonecalls asking me for information which I am sure I had given on the on booking form. I had to request that my boarding passes were printed by you. When the 8 of us compared the information we'd be sent some of us had far more details than others. On the day we went to Scicli and Punto Secco we had a long time by the sea and only a brief glimpse of Donnafugata Castle, and some of us would have preferred more time to visit the castle properly. However these are minor points and I will certainly use your company again.

Hotel good, not 4 star but not important. Tour managers x 3 original one not able to come. Sometimes too much information (repeated) sometimes too little. Admin excellent except for flight reference. Overall enjoyable nice people and interesting sights.

Tour Manager coped very well with unexpectedly bad weather. Two local guides good but Syracuse guide substandard. If repeating this tour Scicli could be an even more attractive base. Despite the downpours we much enjoyed the trip!

More emphasis should be made about the physical difficulty of the terrain.

Monday is not a good idea for a free day in Italy as most museums and churches are closed

Generally the tours were very good. The one tour that might need a rethink was the Noto and Marzememi. Noto was pleasant and had Inspector Montalbano connections but Marzememi was a waste of time being not particularly attractive and too small to have anything of interest. An optional tour was available which, I understand, visited a large house and a ceramic making town/village, (I didn't go on this so my knowledge is rather vague). This was found interesting by those who went and travelling more into the interior of Sicily gave a different aspect to the island. I know that perhaps it wouldn't gel with the title of Baroque but perhaps combining this visit with Scicli and putting Noto with Punta Secca might work. I'm sure another optional tour, perhaps to the coast combined with another small town, could be found.

My only real complaint is that on the Itinerary Monday 19 October was stated to be a "Free Day" with no mention of any optional trips being available locally. We consequently made our own arrangements via the Internet prior to our departure to go to Piazza Armerina, only to discover on our arrival that an optional Sightseeing tour was available at a much reduced cost which we would have taken instead had we been told about it,

However the small coach used on the additional tour to Piazza Armerina had very poor air conditioning which made for a most unpleasant long coach ride on a hot day.

Beds in hotel too narrow and pillows too firm and breakfast choice a bit weird. We needed prior warning re extra activities for rest day and final evening. They were not mentioned in our itinerary. We had to alter our plans.

Enjoyed the trip overall but felt it needed some tweaking.Didnt appreciate the 300+ step climb on our first morning walk around Modica and felt in-ear Whispa guides would be helpful when groups are large.Staff at the hotel were very helpful.

An excellent opportunity to visit the south-east corner of Sicily. There is a lot of Baroque! Lovely to stroll through the various towns admiring the architecture and enjoying the cafés. Hotel is ideally situated in Modica and to enjoy the various restaurants in the evenings.

A wonderful area of Sicily - great architecture, food and wine. I would have appreciated more time in Scili on the last day, rather than travelling in the footsteps of Montalbano! The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, but the rooms were not that comfortable. Great to have Tullio as tour manager again.

Tullio was an attentive tour manager. The trips were very good. The hotel, unused to large holiday groups, did everything they could to meet our expectations and the reception staff were very helpful. A very enjoyable holiday.

An enjoyable tour taking in another aspect of Sicily away from the temples tours provided by many operators. Our tour manager Tullio Scurrio was first class in all respects. We cannot praise him too highly in connection with the resolution of a minor medical problem we encountered during the trip.
