Join Prof. Anne Anderson or Dr Scott Anderson on this lovely tour that explores the history of the seaside in its heyday when fashionable and aristocratic families decamped to the seaside, built sumptuous villas and pleasure gardens, amassed art collections and took the air. Our delightful tour takes in some of the sights and activities that would have been popular a century or more ago, including the superb Russell-Cotes Museum overlooking the sea in the heart of Bournemouth, the spectacular series of gardens at Compton Acres, and a scenic boat cruise of Poole Harbour.

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Best Western Plus Connaught Hotel from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, private dinner with wine and a talk by Anne. 

Day 2: Southampton City Art Gallery and the Russell-Cotes Museum
Our first visit today is to the Southampton City Art Gallery, located in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. First opened in 1939 the gallery is housed in a beautiful period building and holds one of the finest collections of art in the south of England currently comprising over 5,000 works spanning eight centuries. After some free time for lunch (not included) we travel back to Bournemouth and visit the lovely Russell-Cotes Museum, set high on the cliffs overlooking the sea in gorgeous gardens and boasting an impressive collection of paintings within its stunning architectural walls. The museum will also be hosting ‘The Lost Words’ exhibition which combines the creative talents of writer Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris to celebrate the relationship between language and the living world, and nature’s power to spark the imagination. Second talk from Anne, 'Victorian Art and Architecture at the Seaside’ and dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Compton Acres, Poole Harbour Cruise and Poole Museum
Our first visit of the day is to the glorious gardens at Compton Acres. Divided into a series of spectacular gardens of different styles and influences, including Rock and Water, Heather, Japanese and Italian, the last of which is overlooked by the terrace of the stylish Italian Villa. Time for lunch in delightful Poole (not included) before a harbour cruise and a visit to Poole's Museum of local history, set in a Victorian quayside warehouse. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.00.

Prof. Anne Anderson
Prof. Anne Anderson author, broadcaster and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, was a senior lecturer at Southampton Solent University for 14 years, specialising in the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Modernism. Anne's career as an international speaker has taken her all over the world and her TV credits include the BBC's Flog It!. Anne has received a rapturous response from or customers at the many Travel Editions UK lectures and tours as well as a host of tours overseas and her knowledge, wit and enthusiasm bring her beloved subjects to life in whatever location she finds them.

Dr Scott Anderson MA, PhD, FNAVA, ASFAV (Associate of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers)
Scott is a University Senior Lecturer in the History of Art and Design and is an Honorary Fellow of the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers. He is a specialist in Victorian and Edwardian art, architecture and antiques and is a consultant expert for the BBC2 'Flog It!' programme. Scott is an Accredited Lecturer of The Arts Society and has lectured extensively to various societies, special interest groups and educational groups throughout Britain. He has extensive tour guiding experience in Britain, European locations such as Paris, Berlin, Vienna and New York. 

Please note that all our UK tours start and finish at the relevant hotel.  

You can normally check in from 3pm onwards but hotels will always be happy to store your luggage if you arrive earlier in the day.
