This is without doubt one of the most beautiful and unspoilt regions of Crete. Our walks will encounter a variety of terrains in an area which resembles a rocky desert sliced with mysterious gorges, dotted with oasis-like hidden villages, and edged with an exotic craggy coastline. A hidden ‘timeless’ simplistic Crete with a unique atmosphere; rich and rewarding for lovers of an untouched nature, geology, wildlife and history.

Day 1: Fly from London Gatwick to Heraklion.
On arrival in Heraklion, transfer by coach to Makrigialos (approx. 2 hours) and the Villea Village Hotel. Dinner tonight will be a welcome meal at a local taverna.
Day 2: Dafni, Pefki, Makriyialos. Our first day’s walk begins at the village of Dafni with a stroll through scented hills to the traditional village of Pefki. After lunch in a local taverna we enter the Pefki gorge, and follow a path and descend to Makriyialos.
Day 3: Handras, Etia, Voila and Pervolakia. We drive to the village of Handras and begin our walk to the ancient Venetian settlement of Voila and the abandoned village of Etia. We enjoy a picnic lunch at Etia and then continue our walk to the edge of the Pervolakia gorge. Transfer from here by minbus to Makriyilaos.
Day 4: Transfer to Paleokastro. We leave Makriyialos in the morning and drive to Sitia, a very nice town which you will have time to explore before continuing to Paleokastro. On arrival in Paleokastro there will be time to relax, swim and discover the area before starting our walks in the area the next day.
Day 5: Vai, Moni Toplou, Paleokastro. Today we enjoy a coastal walk heading from Palekastro to Vai. After lunch in a local taverna we will visit the historic and working Moni Toplou monastery that sits isolated amidst a wild and barren landscape. Return to hotel in late afternoon.
Day 6: ‘Deads’ Gorge, Zakros. Transferring by bus to the village of Ano Zakros (Upper Zakros) we descend through ‘Deads’ Gorge to the coast at Kato Zakros (Lower Zakros). Don’t worry, this is a beautiful and accessible walk - the gorge is so named because ancient Minoans used caves in the cliffs to bury their dead. In Kato Zakros there will be time to visit the Minoan Palace of Zakros before lunch in one of the tavernas by the sea. We return to Zakros on foot and transfer back to the hotel.
Day 7: The Xoxlakies valley. This is a beautiful walk down a gorge which opens out to a large and deserted beach. The scenery is dramatic, and one feels that in the past this has been an important port and town. There are Minoan remains. We will eat a picnic on the beach and enjoy swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Lybian sea before walking back up the gorge. Return to Palekastro in the mid afternoon.
Day 8: Transfer by coach back to Heraklion airport for your return flight to London Gatwick.
NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 15 passengers.
Please note that walking boots are essential and clients should be in good health. Guided walks are rated as easy to medium, covering between 6 and 12 kilometres a day.

He spent many years living in Greece but has now settled in France with his French wife, Myriam, returning to Greece every year when he can. I failed to obtain boarding passes for return flight, as I did not realise that when your letter said print out boarding passes that this meant for outward and return flights, as I have never had to do this before, I interpreted the boarding 'passes' to be for my friend and myself. If it had said boarding passes for outward and return flights, I would not have made this mistake. All was OK as Jonathan sorted this for us. Accommodation at Villea was good with bath, and kettle in room, which we both appreciated. However accommodation at Marina Village, I thought was poor, no kettle in room and terrible shower and on 2 evenings there was no hot water after supper, which is extremely poor service. Also at both places there was inadequate bedding but I do realise that they probably don't cater for chilly evenings/nights. Otherwise all was OK with good breakfasts. We could not praise Jonathan enough, he was a truly remarkable guide in every possible way - full marks!!

Another excellent holiday led by Jonathan Peat. As usual Jonathan was a mine of information; his care of the group was outstanding and his organisation was spot on. His initiative in arranging an impromptu talk on the local Minoan site by the archeological leader was much appreciated. Thank you to all.
