Famed as the base for the European Parliament, Strasbourg lies halfway between Prague and Paris and is often referred to as the “crossroads of Europe” and it is no surprise that its rich and varied artistic and architectural legacy bears witness to its strategic importance over centuries. This tour looks at its Art Nouveau heritage in the expert hands of Prof. Anne or Dr Scott Anderson and will cross the border into Germany to historic Karlsruhe.

DAY 1: Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris and onwards to Strasbourg by TGV. 
On arrival transfer to the hotel on foot (approx. 200m) for check-in. This evening there will be a welcome drink, lecture “Strasbourg Art Nouveau or Jugendstil?” and dinner with wine at the Art Nouveau Brasserie Floderer (approx. 15 mins walk).

DAY 2: Art Nouveau District and Museums of Fine Arts and Decorative Arts.
Morning walking tour of the German Quarter and Art Nouveau Houses near the Palais des Fetes. After Nancy and Paris, Strasbourg can be considered as the third most representative city of Art Nouveau in France and – as part of Germany at that time – combines the influence of German Jugendstil and Franco-Belgian Art Nouveau.  Afternoon visit to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Decorative Arts, located in the splendour of Rohan Palace. Evening lecture at the hotel – ‘Art Nouveau/Jugendstil: the Karlsruhe Collection” and dinner at the Brasserie Floderer. Please note today will be undertaken on foot and the tram. 

DAY 3: Strasbourg and Karlsruhe.
Morning walking tour of the Allee de La Robertsau area with afternoon excursion to Karlsruhe, which flourished in the 19th century, including some of its Art Nouveau architecture and visit to the Badisches Landesmuseum on Marktplatz with its collection of applied arts from the early 20th century. Evening free.

DAY 4: Strasbourg and home.
A morning visit to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, whose extensive collection includes Rodin’s ‘Thinker’ and works by Monet and Gauguin, before transferring to the station for return TGV to Paris and onwards by Eurostar to St Pancras.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

Prof. Anne Anderson
Prof. Anne Anderson author, broadcaster and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, was a senior lecturer at Southampton Solent University for 14 years, specialising in the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Modernism. Anne's career as an international speaker has taken her all over the world and her TV credits include the BBC's Flog It!. Anne has received a rapturous response from or customers at the many Travel Editions UK lectures and tours as well as a host of tours overseas and her knowledge, wit and enthusiasm bring her beloved subjects to life in whatever location she finds them.

Dr Scott Anderson MA, PhD, FNAVA, ASFAV (Associate of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers)
Scott is a University Senior Lecturer in the History of Art and Design and is an Honorary Fellow of the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers. He is a specialist in Victorian and Edwardian art, architecture and antiques and is a consultant expert for the BBC2 'Flog It!' programme. Scott is an Accredited Lecturer of The Arts Society and has lectured extensively to various societies, special interest groups and educational groups throughout Britain. He has extensive tour guiding experience in Britain, European locations such as Paris, Berlin, Vienna and New York.
