ITINERARY

Day 1: Fly from London Gatwick to Tallinn. On arrival in Tallinn, transfer by coach to your Tallinn hotel. The rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 2: Morning guided walking tour on Tallinn with the afternoon free for your own exploration.
Estonia’s capital, Tallinn is a city on the rise. A delightful mix of the medieval and the modern, the old town is World Heritage-designated – a warren of cobbled streets overlooked by 14th century churches and beautiful buildings. At the same time new and exciting galleries of local artists, boutiques, bars and restaurants are flourishing within the old city walls sitting side by side with traditional artisans. This is the perfect city to stroll the streets and soak up the ambiance – you’ll also have plenty of excellent options for eating out in the evenings.

Day 3: Full day tour to Lahemaa National Park, the fishing villages of Altja and Käsmu and Jägala Waterfall.
Lahemaa, Estonia’s first national park, established in 1971, and still its largest, gives a beautiful overview of the landscapes of the country. It is an extremely important conservation area within Europe, being home to many large mammals including moose, boar, brown bears and lynxes. Altja and Käsmu are beautiful traditional coastal villages that are located within Lahemaa whilst the Jägala Waterfall sits on the lower course of the Jägala River, just 4kms from its mouth at the Gulf of Finland.

Day 4: Transfer by coach from Tallinn to Riga with a visit en route to Pärnu.
The resort town of Pärnu huddles in an inlet of the Gulf of Riga boasting beautiful beaches, lush green spaces and a historical gem of a town centre – this is Estonia’s most popular summer destination. The town also has some excellent museums and is also known as a health resort throughout Eastern Europe, where both old Soviet-style and glamorous, modern spas abound.

Day 5: Morning guided walking tour of Riga with the afternoon free for your own exploration.
Riga, capital of Latvia, is in the middle of a renaissance, the restoration of its many magnificent old buildings and fairytale skyline of turrets and steeples making it one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The largest of the three Baltic cities and a wonderfully vibrant place, Riga is a fascinating fusion of old and new and is particularly known for having the largest concentration of Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture in the world. Riga’s population is roughly 50% Latvian and 50% Russian, the cultures mixing harmoniously to make a cosmopolitan and delightful city.

Day 6: Transfer by coach from Riga to Vilnius with a visit en route to Rundãle Palace.
Built for the Dukes of Courland as a summer retreat, Rundãle Palace is a magnificent vision of opulent Baroque and Rococo. Designed by Italian architect Franceso Bartholomeo Rastrelli, who, as the Russian court architect, also designed the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, the palace was built in the 17th century.

Day 7: Morning guided walking tour of Vilnius with an afternoon visit to Trakai.
Lithuania’s capital Vilnius is home to Europe’s largest Baroque old town – full of decadent churches, magnificent facades, narrow streets and intimate squares, this is picture-perfect city architecture. An enchanting place, Vilnius also has a hint of the Bohemian freethinker about it and has also seen a huge Jewish influence which led to it being the scene of some of the worst atrocities of the Soviet era, something that you’ll see remembered everywhere. The historic city and lake resort of Trakai is surrounded by water, sitting on five lakes. The city’s lovely island castle contains a fascinating history museum.

Day 8: Transfer to Vilnius airport for your return flight to London Gatwick via Riga.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 30 passengers.

- Wheeling cases over cobbled road from the coach to hotel in Estonia - difficult for some and evening bar and food service proved variable. Heli was very good. Overall trip achieves what we all wanted but really another day in each capital would be preferable.

Some of the rooms were cramped for two people. It would be useful to have the opportunity to upgrade rooms at time of booking. Would also be helpful if it was highlighted when the return terminal is different from the departure terminal.

Overall, a most enjoyable holiday, thank you. I must draw your attention to a health/hygiene issue at the Hestia Ilmarine hotel in Tallinn. There was no mattress protector on the bed, so there was nothing between the mattress and bottom sheet which could be changed between guests should it be necessary. Even normal sweating would be absorbed by the mattress - an unpleasant thought.

Use of microphone/headsets would have enhanced the sightseeing tours , especially as the group was quite large and audibility was a bit of an issue. A headset allows one to be a little further from the guide while still able to hear and also to look about one more freely. It's less obtrusive in churches too.

Heli Reimann was an excellent tour manager/guide, she certainly went that extra mile. We have always wanted to go to the Baltic States and all 3 did not disappoint us. The only downside was our hotel in Tallinn, No facilities for hungry travellers who arrived after the dining room had closed, and a not very exciting menu when it was open. Again Heli came to the rescue telling us of external restaurants, where we enjoyed excellent fare.

Our permanent guide, Heli, was very good. Really took care of us and was very knowledgeable. The local guides needed a Bluetooth audio system when outdoors as other groups nearby and sometimes traffic made hearing the difficult. The fact that their English was excellent was marred by the heavy accent. An audio system would improve understanding. But it was an excellent holiday.

Tallinn hotel was not great, the others were very good. Trip to Tallinn national park could be shorter & trip to Trakai was not great (far too crowded) while the trip to Parnu and Rundale Palace were excellent. Heli was a lovely guide, really put herself out for the group. Riga City tour was a let down - poor guide. Overall, it was a lovely trip & I enjoyed it hugely - good company, some great food and all 3 cities were charming and very interesting.

Really excellent tour guide, in Rina . Her narrative was really engaging, interesting and engaging, also informative. Would recommend her highly. Also, we also really enjoyed the company of the others on the tour , we found them all to be interesting and good companions. We felt that we learnt a lot from the trip. Would say, though , that it was very intense, and possibly the tour tries to cram too much into a short period of time. Either have fewer trips , or a longer period away, such as 9 days. I have downgraded the accommodation because the hotel in Riga was situated next to a night club and loud music was played all night. I suggest that you don't use this hotel again. The Tallinn and Vilnius hotels were fine. We also missed the waterfall, probably because it was dry and it seemed strange that we flew from Vilinus to Gatwick instead of a direct flight. Our tour guide was absolutely brilliant, knowledgeable, helpful and lovely.

A third night in Vilnius would have given me more time to explore that intersting city. We only really had a half a day and that was taken up with the walking tour which lasted three hours. We then visited a reconstructed castle in the afternoon which I found of little interest. Simialr comments were made by my fellow travellers. Would it not have been possible to have flown back directly from Vilnius to Gatwick? Nevertheless, a very intersting and educational tour of an area of Europe which, hitherto, I had very little knowledge.

Generally a very good tour, the group size and the in-country guides were just right. One minor suggestion is that the departure from Riga was 10:30, which meant that the Rundale gardens could not be enjoyed fully - an earlier (9:30 a.m.) departure would have allowed time to enjoy the gardens much more.

Did not buy from brochure. Radison Blu great breakfast but very crowded, very small rooms (hard to find room for two small cases). Other hotels very good..Location of Artis superb. Baltic Air more comfortable than Easy Jet. Given age of party the walking tours needed to have breaks in them. In Vilnius it was over 4 hours and we barely had time for lunch before the afternoon tour. Our group was small and this was great. This is very much an excellent taster tour and I would have loved another day in each of the cities so it was 10 days rather than 7.

A unique opportunity to visit three countries with a fascinating history that are being rediscovered since regaining their independence from the former USSR in the early 1990s. They are very accessible to British tourists, with many local residents speaking English and being very friendly and hospitable to visitors to the countries. I must mention the tour guide Taivo Kopel who provided a first class service to all of the guests on the tour. He was extremely knowledgeable about all three of the countries visited and his enthusiasm contributed significantly to my enjoyment of the holiday. One area that could be improved is the accuracy of the pre-tour information about prices in the Baltic states - prices have increased in recent years, especially in Estonia so that the information given about the cost of eating out being inexpensive is no longer correct. It was also rather cold in Estonia in September when I visited - the pre-tour information suggested that temperatures would be far warmer than they actually were. Overall though, I enjoyed the trip immensely.

The tour manager, Riina Alpere, was excellent and went out of her way to meet everyone's needs, including building in an impromptu swimming stop at Parnu, which was much appreciated, although I would have liked to spend more time on the coast during the excursion to Lahemaa National Park. Guides in each city (Peter in Riga and Stepan in Vilnius) were also very knowledgeable, with good sense of humour and excellent English skills. It was very humbling to hear from people who had experienced the transition from Soviet rule first-hand. The only hassle was having to fly from Gatwick, which added to the cost of the trip and to the number of days away.

The tour guide Riina was excellent, even conducting her guests on unscheduled short evening walks in each capital shortly after arrival. The party comprised 13 persons only, which was good. The was a bureaucratic difficulty at Gatwick on check-in, where we were first in the queue. As per the joining instructions, we showed our reference number, Air Baltic being of course a "ticket-less" airline. However the Air Baltic check-in lady insisted implacably that we must check-in on-line or else she would charge us £9.50 each. We hastened to a suitable internet machine, fed this with numerous pound coins and duly produced the necessary paperwork. On returning to the check-in desk, the lady was rather apologetic and explained she had made a mistake. It transpired that our reference was a GROUP reference. Unknown to us, we were travelling in a group. Perhaps this should be made clear in the joining instructions (did we miss this?). Maybe Air Baltic staff should be better informed. We did not of course receive a refund for our extra expenditure of £6. The return flight, requiring a 5:30 departure from the hotel, was rather early, but we of course knew this when we booked. Otherwise an excellent trip.

The variety of sites we visited was just right - not just historical ones. We wanted to know about life for ordinary people today and in the past, rather than castle x was built in 1547 etc. That's on the internet these days. The tour guide was excellent, if she couldn't answer a question on geography, politics, culture she went away and found out.
