Day 1: Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris and onwards to Hendaye by TGV. On arrival, transfer by coach to Zarautz (approx. 40 mins) and Zarauz Hotel. Dinner at the hotel restaurant is included tonight.
Day 2: Full day tour to San Sebastián.
A picturesque resort city, San Sebastián sits on the calm La Concha bay backed by low, rolling hills. The city is best known for its beaches but it is so much more, with a lively, buzzing atmosphere that fills the streets all day and well into the night. The charming Parte Vieja (old town) nestles at the foot of the green Monte Urgull, whilst Centro, the shopping and commercial district has some lovely 19th century architecture.
Day 3: Full day tour to Biarritz, Bayonne and Saint- Jean-de-Luz.
Biarritz is a stylish coastal town, a playground of the French glitterati. Today the resort is a haven for surfers, its seafront lined with grand old buildings, including the gorgeous 1930s Casino Municipal. Being the capital of France’s Pays Basque, Bayonne has a palpable Basque flavour. This attractive small city is best explored with a stroll through the narrow streets of the old town where you’ll find half-timbered houses painted in traditional Basque colours. Visit the excellent Musée Basque to delve deeper into the culture. Saint-Jean-de-Luz, with its sheltered and sandy beaches and magnificent old town complete with half-timbered mansions, is one of the most popular and attractive resorts on France’s Atlantic coast.
Day 4: Full day to relax and explore Zarautz at your leisure.
The coastal town of Zarautz is a popular seaside resort with a long swathe of sandy beach. A luxury resort in the late 19th and early 20th century, a number of lavish mansions sprung up along the seafront, which you’ll find as public buildings today. There are also a couple of museums to explore, the Photomuseum and the Art and History Museum of Zarautz.
Day 5: Full day tour to Pamplona and el Valle del Bidasoa.
Best known for its legendary festival of Sanfermines, Pamplona is a wealthy and self-possessed city. Built as a fortress to protect routes into Spain from the Pyrenees before becoming the capital of the fiercely independent state of Navarra the compact Casco Antiguo (old town) is stuffed with quaint stone lanes leading to lovely churches and a magnificent citadel. El Valle del Bidasoa is a lovely lush area of fern, grass and woods scattered with traditional farmhouses.
Day 6: Full day tour to Bilbao.
A modern and prosperous city, Bilbao nestles in a narrow valley, the surrounding mountain slopes peeking through the high rise buildings of the city centre. The arrival of the Museo Guggenheim (entrance included) in 1997 transformed the city into a tourist hotspot and although not as pretty as its near neighbours there is plenty to do here – the attractive Casco Viejo is a charming place to explore.
Day 7: Full day tour to Vitoria-Gasteiz and Oñati.
A flourishing medieval wool and iron trade created the elegant and undiscovered city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, filling it with Renaissance palaces, beautiful churches and grey-gold stone mansions. The medieval core of the city is arranged over a small hill and is a wonderful place to wander and discover plazas, palacios and excellent Basque restaurants. The name Oñati perfectly describes the setting of this lovely town, translating as ‘place of many hills’. Oñati has an abundance of fine medieval architecture, including the beautiful ancient university buildings.
Day 8: Transfer back to Hendaye station to catch the return TGV to Paris. At Paris, board the return Eurostar service to St Pancras.
NB: Exact order of itinerary may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
Please note for 2019 the maximum group size on this tour is 49 passengers.
NEW FOR 2020
Further to analysis of questionnaires received from many hundreds of our valued clients, we have decided to introduce two key changes to our tours in 2020:
1. The group size on all overseas tours is to be limited to a maximum of 35 or lower.
2. All overseas tours will include a welcome drink on the first evening, so that guests can get to know each other.
We hope that these changes will enhance our tours for all participants.
PLEASE NOTE: As with most trains, passengers are responsible for carrying baggage onto and off the train. Baggage can be stored on overhead shelves or at the entrance to the carriages. Trollies are available at St Pancras, but bags do need to be carried onto the platform.
Travel Editions recommends a luggage delivery service called thebaggageman, where your suitcase can be picked up from your home before departure and delivered straight to your hotel; therefore removing the worry about carrying your cases onto and off the trains. Please click here for more information and we have arranged a 10% discount exclusive to Travel Editions clients off the thebaggageman service. Tel: 01844 264890
Zarauz Hotel, Zarautz
The three-star Zarauz Hotel is a traditional hotel dating from 1945 housed in a character villa close to the seafront. Facilities at the hotel include restaurant, bar, lounge and comfortable bedrooms with private bath/shower, TV, telephone and hairdryer.
Zarauz Hotel Website
OUR VIEW ON THE HOTEL
An excellent addition to our portfolio, offering a very Spanish atmosphere and a good standard of service and comfort. Zarautz is a typical Basque resort with a small but pretty old quarter, the beachside promenade is about 400m from the hotel and is ideally located for the places visited on the tour.
Pre-tour accommodation is available at the Premier Inn, London Kings Cross St Pancras, about a 5 minutes walk from St Pancras International, at an approximate rate of £90 per room. Bookings can be made direct with the hotel on 0871 527 8672 or visit their website.
We love to receive feedback from our customers. Their views help us to keep improving the ours we offer. If you have been on this tour and would like to submit a review, please log in to our client area here and fill in the short form.
This is a tour which we have repeated, particularly for the various destinations visited, of which San Sebastian, Bilbao and Biarritz are probably our favourites. Zarautz is a well-located base and the hotel is OK, though maybe not one of Travel Editions’ better ones. Our tour manager, Serge, was excellent, and we appreciated the couple of variations/additions he made to the itinerary, which meant we visited a couple of places we hadn’t previously seen on this same tour. The guide was excellent - knowledgeable and approachable. Hotel and tours were fine but we would have liked longer in the main destinations. Train travel was very disappointing. We booked first class expecting extra comfort but were seated at a table for 4, with no leg room and no space for bags.

Very interesting tour giving an insight of the region and a chance to see several different places. It was the first time our guide had taken that tour but she had information from the previous guide to pass on regarding local restaurants, local buses, trains etc. for our free day.
Review by Atkinson who travelled 19-June-2019
Very good tour. However, we found the food in Spain most disappointing to the point of being non available in Zarautz. All the eating out areas appeard to serve only drinks, all the tables were in use but no food was being eaten, after traipsing about the town on second evening we gave up (who wants to traipse arround at 10 pm on a wild goose trail?) We were not the only ones dissapointed. Except for an expensive but excellent lunch in a fish restraunt in San Sebastián we dined in the Hotel Zarautz, which we found basic but good value @ €13.95 including very reasonable quality wine. When we had the last day visit to France, what a difference, food shops and eating establishments all serving good stuff. Overall a good trip - excellant weather and interesting places visited . An excellent varied tour visiting several basque areas, with Pamplona , SanSebastian and Bilbao the high points. Hotel ok in terms of accommodation and breakfast but poor in customer relations and evening food dire. Tour manager Serge was exceptional, both in local knowledge and tact and consummate diplomacy in dealing with awkward members of the party. I would also single out his outstanding professionalism in assisting my friend who needed hospital treatment after falling over. Stoically and without hestitation Serge ably assisted us in trying overnight circumstances in A&E and was back on duty -with scant opportunity for sleep -the next day. I would fully recommend Serge as an exceptional tour guide and would thank him again for his help and assistance.
Review by Wickington who travelled 12-June-2018
Serge was a star; very well informed and enjoyable company; for us he was especially super in sorting out our return journey from Paddington for which we had made wrong, and very expensive, arrangements based on your poor information. Hence the poor marking for administration. The return Eurostar times you gave us were wholly wrong - by 2 hours. Was this because you had not taken the new TGV service into account? Based on this info we had booked a taxi home as the arrival time was too late to catch a train. It would have been very helpful if the discrepancy had been pointed out when you posted the actual tickets. Thanks to Serge we were able to cancel the taxi and book rail tickets. We saved over £100, but were still about £20 adrift. We need hardly tell a Travel firm that there are significant savings to be made by booking rail tickets 12 weeks in advance. But we still like Travel Editions; we're coming in September and will be in touch soon to discover which trips in Summer/Autumn next year Serge will be doing.

the hotel on the 1st night were'nt prepared for our request for her to have a veggie/fish meal , and what she got was very poor. otherwise they were helpful, apart from not clearing tables after they were vacated at breakfast, which we'd not come across before.A great trip in every other respect-especially the guide we had - well informed attentive amusing, nothing too much trouble, a hero to all of us. The day trips were interesting, well-planed without being too tiring. Also nicely spaced out and flexible as well as relaxed. An enjoyable holday -thanks.

Realized our ambition to visit the Guggenhein Museum at Bilbao. Never having heard of Zurautz before this trip we thought it a very good base. Particularly enjoyable to walk along the promenade to watch the surfers in the evenings. A very interesting region with a climate that suits.
Review by Shaw who travelled 12-June-2018
This has the makings of a lovely holiday. We were unfortunate in having indifferent weather. However, rail journey was efficient and enjoyable. Hotel was not inspirational. Food average and staff not particularly welcoming. Despite weather, we were bowled over by beautiful countryside, coastline, wonderful and interesting places, especially San Sebastian. Zarautz good location. We found itinerary a bit too busy. Would be good to have an extra day, to allow for 2 free days, even if costs a bit higher. We enjoyed Basque tapas and found things relatively inexpensive despite poor exchange rate.
Review by Morse who travelled 12-September-2017
We enjoyed our trip to the Basque country but would make the comment that there should be a free day in the middle of the trip due to the itinerary which involved a lot of early morning departures on the coach to the various cities and towns in the region. Because most of our group were in their 70's or even older it would be better to curtail the excursions to one city per day in my opinion. We enjoyed our day in San Sebastian but would have liked another hour or so there , the same with our day in Biarritz. The meal in the hotel in Zarutz on the first night was also very poor and not what we were expecting after a long jouney from London St Pancras, a meal of a small salad, a cold fish dish , and 2 pieces of chicken with no veg was very disappointing !!!! Our tour manager was very knowledgable and helpfull with an excellent manner and friendly also.
Review by Finn who travelled 12-September-2017
A holiday with lots packed in. The hotel was fine but they could have promoted the restaurant to the guests. Finding places to eat early in the week was a challenge. A list of places would be helpful . Our tour guide was a very nice chap. He was knowledgable but his personal presentation was a bit shambling. We felt that he did not present himself in a professional way re his clothes. A quiet word re looking a little smarter would be good. He did a good job getting us around and nothing was too much trouble.

We loved Zarautz. A great place to return to each evening. Only a 5 minute walk to the sea for a paddle or bathe before dinner. There was a little confusion about which restaurants were open on Sundays, but none of them serves dinner before 8.30 any evening. Fine, once we knew, Our trip greatly enhanced by being a smaller group. 30 max is an ideal number.l

Review by Mr Richard Pollard who travelled 29-September-2016
Excellent tour overall thankyou. The days out were too hard/long though. Many travellers over 70, spent day before getting to London, poor night's sleep in hotel, 11 hours or so travelling to Zarauz, and then 2 long days out. Many were "knackered" by the time the day off came. Excursions to one city only eg San Sebastian or Pamplona do not need to start at 9.00am and finish at 5.00pm. Even with great weather most guests had had enough by about 3.00pm. Gary Smith was an excellent tour guide, calm, measured, humourous, clear in his instructions, very informative all cities inc. Paris but not overloading, multi lingual, and a snappy dresser!

Review by Mr David Brown who travelled 08-September-2016
This is the second time we have done this tour, and we greatly enjoyed it again, including repeating most of the days out. We did opt out of one, and instead spent an extra day at San Sebastian, which is possibly the best of the destinations. Travel arrangements all went well and Terry, the Tour Manager, was excellent. The Zarautz base is highly suitable – it’s fairly lively, has an excellent beach and some great tapas bars (as we discovered – having eaten more disappointingly in the “proper” restaurants on our previous visit!). So glad it wasn’t half-board, as we would have been more than half bored! The hotel remains a little basic but perfectly acceptable with friendly reception staff (although the “We couldn’t make a cup of tea in our room” brigade will no doubt make their usual point).

We personally would have liked half board, but this may have been tricky in a hotel in Spain because of their late eating habits. The day we went into France would might have preferred two stops than three (miss out Bayonne?) We never had any problems on this trip, but it would have been reassuring to have a mobile phone number for our guide in case we got delayed or lost during a day out

Basic hotel, poor breakfast, no bar facility. Good position in good town, good excursions except Vittoria which had not enough attractions for the time allowed. Superb tour manager in Serge, who was so helpful every day but excelled in dealing with transport difficulties due to strike. Can't praise him enough. Good tour all round.
Review by Mr Michael Ryan who travelled 19-May-2016
Serge dealt brilliantly with the cancellation of our train on the return journey and calmly negotiated seats on the only available train and a different Eurostar train to that which was originally booked. He kept us informed of the options available and what he was planning to do.He remained calm and efficient throughout. Thanks to his efforts our waiting time was kept to a minimum and we arrived in London several hours ahead of schedule. During our stay Serge was cheerful and efficient and full of useful and interesting information. He maintaine excellent relations with the coach drivers and the hotel to ensure everything went smoothly. The hotel was adequate but the room was small, breakfast basic and the staff did not always appear friendly or helpful. It was also extremely odd and unwelcoming for the hotel to have a bar but to refuse to open it. Overall we had an excellent holiday and would congratulate Serge on being unflappable in the face of real disruption to the planned schedule.
Review by Mr Allan Melzack who travelled 19-May-2016
The one let down wqas the hotel. The bedroom was basic and poorly furnished. The hotel lounge was pleasant but the bar was ony open on one evening. The terrace which woudl have been lovely to sit on and enjoy the evening sun was not open and the staff really didn't make an effort to make guests feel welcome. Our tour manager terry Regan was excellent throughout the tour. However he was exceptionally good when the Eurostar was cancelled for the day when we reached Paris North. He worked tirelessly and without complaint for the rest of the day organising train tickets, funds for refreshments, looking after cases and generally ensuring that we were kept up to date with the situation as it unfolded. We could not have asked for a more competent person. In conjunction with guidance from yourselves we travelled to Arras where a good hotel was booked within easy walking distance of the station. By breakfast time next day Terry was up very early to get more train tickets organised for our onward journey to Lille. Here again train tickets for a Eurostar to London were quickly obtained. As we arrived in London Terry was at the doors as usual (as he had been throughout the holiday) to ensure everyone managed to get off with cases without mishap. A special thank you is due to Terry for his superb work throughout the holiday and always with a smile and an excellent sense of humour. Thank you also to Travel Editions for excellent advice to Terry on how to procede when the Eurostar stopped running. Everything went so smoothly in the circumstances. Thank you Geoff & Karmen Nicholson

We have already sent most of these comments via the tour manager, who was outstanding from beginning to end. Most particularly was he effective when we had to delay our return by a day due to striking French workers in Calais. May we thank you, too at HQ, for the swift way in which you dealt with that crisis. A stroke of genius to send us to Arras, so that we could use Eurostar Lille on the Wednesday (and a good plan for similar events in the future!). Hotel only satisfactory because the breakfast was disappointing. Rooms spotless, location great. Thank you for an excellent holiday - we look forward to Montpellier in the autumn. Huw and Jan Lewis

Thank you for your comments and we were pleased to learn that tou enjoyed the tour overall. With regards to the seating on the train we try very hard to cater for all seating requests but as stated on your confirmation, it has to be a request and cannot be guaranteed. This is due to the fact we have no control over the seating we are allocated, particularly on the TGV sections.
a very pleasant trip to an interesting part of Europe. The tour manager Sergi was very informative about the places we visited. The hotel was good but had the smallest bathroom I have ever encountered so I had to dry off in the bedroom after a shower . The only thing i did'nt like about the hotel was that they allow dogs.

We have been on a number of your tours and this one certainly lived up to expectations. We enjoyed all the destinations visited, especially San Sebastian, which was probably the highlight. The travel arrangements for outward and return journeys went extremely smoothly, even the dreaded station change in Paris. We did not have the same coach driver every day, though the one we had for most of the time was a very good and considerate driver. One of the others, though, was not – a bit of a last-second heavy braker and tail-gater, as one or two commented. The hotel room was slightly basic, but nevertheless comfortable, although the absence of air-conditioning was a slight downside. The dinner at the hotel on the first night was an excellent idea – the meal was fully acceptable, and people were able to socialise at the end of a tiring day, and, speaking for ourselves, we were able to make new friends whose company we then greatly enjoyed for the rest of the holiday. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Our tour manager was knowledgeable and well-qualified, and conducted the tour most competently, in spite of some health issues affecting his mobility. Zarautz, where we were based, was a pleasant seaside town, with lively Basque culture (a local festival happened to take place while we were there) and there were plenty of eating places for evening meals. Overall, a very pleasurable experience, and on a par with our previous Travel Editions trips.

There was a lot of noise outside the hotel on several nights due to roadworks and a local festival. However this was outside the control of the hotel or the Tour Manager. No air conditioning in the rooms meant it became very hot with the windows shut to keep out the noise. The visits to the towns and cities were excellent and the whole tour was exactly as described in the brochure.

The Tour Manager Serge was absolutely first class both informative beyond usual expectations and with a really good sense of humour. He dealt with any problems so smoothly. The hotel failed to provide tea and coffee making facilities. This showed up because they were understaffed on room service.Otherwise a very enjoyable holiday.

overal a most enjoyable holiday with lots of interest. Tour manager, Serge Bertini, looked after our group of 36 very well and did an excellent job for us in a friendly and efficient manner.

Tour Manager (Serge) extremely efficient, helpful and knowledgeable. Hotel was fine - clean and comfortable albeit basic. Tours were well thought out and fitted the bill very well. Travel arrangements worked out well and everything dovetailed perfectly.

Our week in the Basque country was very stimulating and enjoyable. The company grand. The hotel was basic and could have been made so much better with minimal changes by the management (a kettle in each bedroom for example, and reception staff who actually wanted to be helpful). BUT the big thank you is to leader Serge Bertini. He was brilliant: quite the best of all the Travel Editions tour managers we've travelled with. Give that man a gold star!

I would much prefer to pay an increased price for the tour instead of being expected to tip the tour guide and drivers. I think tipping is demeaning to the recipients.

The tour lived up to expectations. The weather was excellent. The local guide at Onati was disappointing, but Serge had no control over that..

Excellent tour manager- informative and professional. Well balanced itinary. Hotel very clean, but our particular room at the front was very noisy. Overall a very enjoyable holiday and we will certainly consider using your company again.

The hotel was fine: my room was clean and well-serviced. However, the hotel bar was never open so this meant it was difficult (especially as a single traveller) to socialise easily in the evenings with fellow travellers, so this was disappointing. The tour guide, Terry (Egan?) was excellent. His historical and cultural knowledge was extensive, interesting and entertaining. He was thoughtful and took time to show or inform us of other, more unusual, sights to see.

A well designed and balanced tour with flexibility to adapt to own tastes. Good value for money. Conscious that this was the Tour Manager's first experience of the holiday, and a Spanish linguist would have been useful. Information was quite adequate and local travel arrangements worked efficiently.
