Portugal Uncovered is the latest carefully curated journey and the brainchild of our head of Sales & Marketing, Ellen Walker, whose passion for authentic travel experiences and deep appreciation of Portugal’s rich heritage have shaped an itinerary that ventures beyond the familiar. Designed to reveal the soul of the country through its landscapes, history, traditions and people, this immersive exploration combines iconic landmarks with lesser-known treasures, offering a deeper understanding of one of Europe’s most captivating destinations.

A journey through Portugal is not simply travel—it is a gradual unfolding of time itself, where history does not sit behind glass but lives in stone, river, and hillside. Each day reveals a different chapter of a country shaped by seafarers, kings, monks and mountain communities, whose legacy still breathes through fortified cities, sun-warmed monasteries and cobbled streets worn smooth by centuries of footsteps.

Here, ancient kingdoms rise quietly through medieval castles and Roman foundations, while UNESCO-listed cities preserve the grandeur of Portugal’s Age of Discovery alongside intimate neighbourhoods where daily life continues much as it has for generations. River valleys—most famously the Douro—cut deep through terraced landscapes, where vineyards climb impossible slopes and the rhythm of the land is measured in harvests, seasons and stories passed from one generation to the next.

Beyond the cities and monuments, Portugal reveals its most poetic side in its hidden villages—places seemingly suspended between myth and memory. Granite hamlets perched on hillsides, slate-built settlements blending into mountain contours and coastal towns shaped by wind and salt all seem to exist slightly outside of time. It is in these quiet corners that the essence of the country is most vividly felt: enduring, atmospheric and profoundly human, where every path, wall and doorway feels like part of a larger, living narrative.

Portugal Uncovered is more than a tour; it is an invitation to experience the country's remarkable diversity, from celebrated cultural treasures to remote landscapes and timeless communities, all woven together into a journey of discovery, connection and unforgettable moments.

Upon arrival at Porto Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel overlooking the beautiful Douro River.
This afternoon, begin your introduction to Porto with a guided exploration of its UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic centre. Wander through atmospheric streets lined with colourful tiled façades, elegant churches, grand squares and riverside promenades that reflect the city's rich mercantile past. From medieval alleyways to magnificent viewpoints, Porto reveals its character at every turn.
This evening, enjoy a welcome drink before gathering for dinner at a traditional local restaurant, where regional flavours and Portuguese hospitality provide the perfect introduction to the journey ahead.

Day 2: Guimarães & the Mountains of Gerês
Following breakfast, travel to the historic city of Guimarães, affectionately known as the birthplace of Portugal. It was here that the country's first king established the foundations of the Portuguese nation, and today its beautifully preserved medieval centre remains one of the country's greatest treasures. Explore cobbled lanes, ancient squares and imposing monuments, including the impressive Guimarães Castle and the elegant Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. The city's rich heritage and timeless atmosphere provide a fascinating insight into Portugal's early history.
Later, continue through the scenic landscapes of northern Portugal to the spectacular Peneda-Gerês National Park. Portugal's only national park is a land of rugged mountains, forested valleys, waterfalls and traditional stone villages where life continues at a gentler pace. Arrive at your beautifully situated pousada overlooking the Caniçada Reservoir. Dinner is included this evening.

Day 3: The Natural Beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park
Today is devoted to discovering the remarkable landscapes and traditions of Peneda-Gerês National Park. Accompanied by local guides, enjoy an immersive jeep excursion through one of Portugal's most breathtaking regions. Travel along mountain trails and through remote granite villages where ancient customs and rural traditions have been preserved for centuries. Along the way, admire crystal-clear streams, dramatic waterfalls, rolling forests and sweeping panoramas across the park's unspoilt wilderness. Your guide will share stories of local life, folklore and the unique relationship between the people and this extraordinary landscape.
Later, spend time in the charming village of Gerês, browsing local craft shops and discovering traditional textiles, embroidery and handmade artisan products. For those wishing to unwind, an optional thermal spa experience is available this afternoon, drawing upon the region's famous mineral-rich waters. Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Through the Douro Valley to Historic Viseu
After breakfast, depart Gerês and journey through some of northern Portugal's most beautiful scenery. Your first stop is the picturesque riverside town of Amarante, nestled beside the Tâmega River and framed by the Serra do Marão mountains. Take time to admire the iconic São Gonçalo Bridge and Church, stroll through charming streets and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that has inspired artists and writers for generations.
Continue into the heart of the spectacular Douro Valley, one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions and a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape. At Peso da Régua, board a historic train for a memorable journey through terraced vineyards that cling dramatically to the hillsides above the Douro River. As the train winds through the valley, enjoy traditional music, regional delicacies and a tasting of Porto Ferreira Port wine. At Pinhão Station, admire the famous azulejo tile panels illustrating local wine-making traditions before continuing to Tua, where local producers showcase the flavours and craftsmanship of the region. This afternoon, travel onward to the elegant city of Viseu, renowned for its rich history, charming architecture and connection to the celebrated Dão wine region. Dinner is included this evening.

Day 5: Discovering the Historic Heart of Viseu
This morning, explore the elegant city of Viseu, often regarded as one of Portugal’s most attractive and liveable cities. Situated in the heart of the celebrated Dão wine region, Viseu combines a rich medieval heritage with Renaissance artistry, grand architecture and beautifully preserved public spaces. Accompanied by your guide, wander through atmospheric squares, narrow stone streets and charming gardens while discovering the stories behind the city’s noble mansions, churches and historic monuments. Highlights include the impressive cathedral and the renowned Grão Vasco Museum, home to masterpieces by Vasco Fernandes, one of Portugal’s most important Renaissance painters. Viseu’s relaxed pace and welcoming atmosphere offer a wonderful contrast to the larger cities visited earlier in the journey, allowing time to appreciate the authentic rhythm of Portuguese life. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. Relax in one of the city’s inviting cafés, browse local boutiques or continue exploring the historic centre at your own pace. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant showcasing regional cuisine.

Day 6: Medieval Villages, Mountain Landscapes & Aveiro
Today’s journey takes you through some of Portugal’s most captivating historic villages, where medieval walls, granite houses and dramatic landscapes combine to create scenes that seem untouched by time. Your first stop is Linhares da Beira, a beautifully preserved mountain village crowned by an imposing castle overlooking the Serra da Estrela region. Stroll through its narrow lanes and discover architectural treasures that reflect centuries of Portuguese history.
Continue to the fortified town of Trancoso, once a vital stronghold protecting Portugal’s frontier with Spain. Explore its remarkably preserved walls, medieval streets and historic Jewish Quarter, where carved Hebrew symbols still mark ancient doorways and tell the story of a once-thriving community.
Later, travel westward to Aveiro, one of Portugal’s most distinctive coastal cities. Known as the “Portuguese Venice,” Aveiro charms visitors with its network of canals, colourful moliceiro boats and elegant Art Nouveau buildings. Dinner this evening introduces the flavours of Portugal’s Atlantic coast.

Day 7: Aveiro, Ílhavo & the Atlantic Coast
Today is devoted to discovering the unique character of Aveiro and the maritime traditions that have shaped this fascinating region for centuries. Begin with a leisurely cruise aboard a traditional moliceiro boat, gliding through the city’s picturesque canals while admiring elegant façades, bridges and colourful waterfront buildings. The waterways offer a unique perspective on a city whose prosperity was built upon salt production, fishing and maritime trade.
Continue with a guided walk through the historic centre, where Art Nouveau architecture, bustling squares and beautifully tiled buildings reveal Aveiro’s rich cultural heritage. No visit would be complete without tasting the city’s famous ovos moles, a delicious sweet delicacy unique to the region. Later, travel to nearby Ílhavo to visit the renowned Vista Alegre Museum. Established in 1824, Vista Alegre is synonymous with Portuguese porcelain excellence, and your visit offers fascinating insight into its artistic traditions and craftsmanship. Before returning to Aveiro, stop at the charming seaside settlement of Costa Nova, famous for its brightly striped fishermen’s houses and scenic Atlantic coastline. Dinner is at leisure this evening.

Day 8: Roman Heritage & the University City of Coimbra
Depart Aveiro this morning and journey south toward one of Portugal’s most important archaeological treasures. The site offers one of the most complete and fascinating glimpses into Portugal’s ancient past.
Continue to Coimbra, a city synonymous with learning, culture and tradition. Once the capital of Portugal, Coimbra is best known for its historic university, one of the oldest in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A highlight of your visit is the magnificent Joanina Library, considered among the most beautiful libraries in the world. Richly decorated with gilded woodwork, painted ceilings and rare manuscripts, it stands as a testament to Portugal’s golden age. Also visit the imposing Old Cathedral, one of the finest Romanesque monuments in the country. Dinner is included this evening.

Day 9: Monasteries, Legends & the Atlantic Coast
Today reveals some of Portugal’s most significant religious monuments and enduring historical legends. Begin with a visit to the magnificent Batalha Monastery, one of Europe’s greatest Gothic masterpieces. Admire its soaring architecture, intricate stone carvings and the extraordinary Unfinished Chapels. Continue to the coastal town of Nazaré, renowned for its fishing traditions, dramatic ocean views and strong cultural identity. Enjoy time to soak up the atmosphere and admire the spectacular Atlantic coastline.
In the afternoon, visit the remarkable Monastery of Alcobaça, founded in the 12th century and considered one of the finest examples of Cistercian architecture in Europe. Here lie the famous tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, whose tragic love story remains one of Portugal’s most cherished legends. Return to Coimbra this evening.

Day 10: Medieval Óbidos & Enchanting Sintra
After breakfast, travel to the beautifully preserved walled town of Óbidos, one of Portugal’s most charming medieval treasures. Encircled by ancient fortifications, Óbidos invites visitors to step back in time. Wander along cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses adorned with colourful flowers, browse artisan shops and soak up the atmosphere of a town that has changed little over the centuries. Enjoy a tasting of the local speciality, Ginjinha, a traditional cherry liqueur often served in an edible chocolate cup.
This afternoon, continue to the magical town of Sintra. Set amidst forested hills and dramatic landscapes, Sintra has long inspired poets, artists and royalty. Its extraordinary collection of palaces, villas and gardens has earned UNESCO World Heritage status and secured its reputation as one of Europe’s most romantic destinations. Dinner is included this evening.

Sample the region’s famous queijadas while enjoying the unique atmosphere that has captivated visitors for generations.
Continue to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. Here, towering cliffs plunge dramatically into the Atlantic Ocean, creating one of Portugal’s most spectacular coastal landscapes. Your journey then follows the scenic coastline to Boca do Inferno, a dramatic rock formation carved by centuries of pounding waves, before arriving in the elegant resort town of Cascais, once favoured by European royalty. Dinner is included this evening.

Day 12: Lisbon – The City of Seven Hills
