Reus and Tarragona - The Birthplace of Gaudi

This new tour explores the influence and heritage of two of Spain’s greatest architects, Antoni Gaudi and Lluis Domenech I Montaner, in Reus, where Gaudi was born and Montaner developed his style and Tarragona rich in Modernist architecture. All explored in the company of expert, Prof Anne Anderson.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Reus orientation walking tour
Fly from London Gatwick to Barcelona and transfer by coach to Reus for check-in to your hotel. Afternoon, orientation walking tour of Reus. Welcome drink, lecture “Gaudi – the Masterworks ” and dinner with wine at the hotel.

Day 2: Tarragona
Morning walking tour of some of the Modernist sights of Tarragona of which there are a host, including an internal visit to the unusual Metropol Theatre with its nautically-themed Art Nouveau interior. Our exploiration continues in the afternoon, again on foot, to include the Cathedral with its 1922 ‘monstrance” by architect Bernadí Martorell i Puig, who also built the Convent of the Teresian Order in Tarragona. Second lecture at the hotel, “Catalan Modernisme “ and dinner with wine at the hotel.

Day 3: Reus
First of all we visit the Gaudi Centre, a tribute by the town to the birth of its most famous son, which looks at the life and work of “God’s architect” – thanks to his religious devotion – in great detail.  A walking tour, including the Gaudi Trail, will show you some of the Modernist and Gaudi-related sights in the town, including his childhood home, as well as the superb Pere Mata Institute by Montaner, a forerunner of his masterpiece in Barcelona, the Hospital de Sant Pau.

Day 4: A morning visit to another of Montaner’s buildings in Reus, the superb Casa Navas, followed by free time in the city, before transferring to Barcelona airport for the return flight to London Gatwick.
