Fotheringhay – where Richard III was born and Mary Queen of Scots executed
Richard III is one of England’s most notorious kings. His death at Bosworth in 1485 ended the long Plantagenet reign and heralded the start of the Tudor dynasty. This tour will trace Richard’s trail back from his car park burial site through Leicester to Bosworth Field before looking at Fotheringhay, where he was born, altogether a fascinating historical journey.

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Hilton Leicester from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, private dinner with wine and a talk by expert Julian Humphrys of the Battlefield Trust - ‘The Wars of the Roses’, looking at the causes of, and events leading to, the accession of Richard III.
Day 2: Leicester Cathedral, Richard III Visitor Centre, Bosworth Visitor Centre and Battlefield.
First, we visit Leicester Cathedral (reopening late 2023 after a year long renovation) where we will visit the tomb of Richard III and learn about his reinterment in 2015, view the funeral pall as well as viewing the redemption windows within the Cathedral. Next, onto the Richard III Visitor Centre and exhibition. Here, we will see the dramatic story of the king’s life, brutal death and the fascinating story of his rediscovery. After free time for lunch in Leicester (not included) we travel out to Bosworth to explore the visitor centre, which gives an insight into medieval life through film, displays and artefacts. Our last visit of the day will be to the battlefield where Richard was killed, with commentary by your guides from the coach, as we travel around key locations. Dinner at the hotel followed by a talk by Matthew Morris, who supervised the successful archaeological search for the lost grave of King Richard III - 'Richard III: The King under the Car Park - solving a 500-year old mystery'.
Day 3: Kirby Muxloe, lunch at The Talbot Hotel, Oundle and Fotheringhay.
This morning we make a short visit to Kirby Muxloe Castle, begun by William Hastings during the Wars of the Roses. The fortified residence was never completed due to Hastings’ execution by Richard for treason in 1483. Next, we travel to the lovely village of Oundle for an included lunch at The Talbot Hotel. The façade and main structure of the hotel are thought to date from 1626 and alongside its historical connections to Fotheringhay, it is of such exceptional architectural and historical importance that it is classified as a Grade I heritage building by Historic England and is among the top three per cent of all listed buildings in England. We finish the day with a visit to lovely Fotheringhay to view the Castle ruins, where Richard was born in 1452 and where Mary Queen of Scots was executed. We will also visit St Mary & All Saints Church nearby. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.00.
NB: Exact order of itinerary may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion
Please note: Post tour extra nights are available at a supplement.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 48 passengers.
Tour Grading: This tour has been graded as moderate due to the amount of walking involved and standing for viewing at sites. There is limited places to sit at each attraction, some steps, and visits can take up to an hour. Paths may be uneven underfoot. At Bosworth visitor centre there is a 100yard uphill walk to the memorial.
Oundle - access to where we eat via stairs
Fotheringhay - Drop off outside church. 10 minute level walk to church. (ten minute back) Castle grounds uneven and grassy.

A very interesting and enjoyable trip, with Julian an excellent guide. An unexpected benefit was the tour manager being an historian too, also contributing information. A real highlight was the talk by Matthew Morris, the Director of the excavation that found Richard III. An unexpected treat was the lunch stop at Oundle. Not only was the lunch extremely good but Oundle turned out to be a lovely little town with many beautiful buildings. I found the Leicester Hilton a little shabby and old fashioned, with the rooms in need of a refresh. And there didn't seem to be any environmental policy: my towels were changed every day even though I hung them up. That is very unusual these days and shouldn't still be happening.

Travel Editions feedback:
Thank you for your feedback and we are delighted that the tour was a success with Julian and Nicola. Your comments about the hotel are noted though, the hotel is due to be having a refurbishment, and the location does make this it ideal for the visits on this tour. We hope it did not detract from the overall enjoyment though.
Thé content of the tour was excellent masses of well delivered info. Both Nicki and Julian were pleasant and helpful. My friend did not rate the food and I thought the buffet on Sunday was a bit weird. However it will not stop me travelling with you again!

Excellent the guides very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and we look forward to out next tour. I have one suggestion that there was so much information it would have been useful to have written summaries.
Review by Wilson who travelled 07-June-2024
We had a lovely time with perfect hosts. Our only issue would be that the talks started at 8.30pm and finished at 10pm. Given that we were asked to be ready by 9am this meant breakfast at 7pm so early. Perhaps talks could start a bit earlier at 8pm?

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour, which opened my eyes to alternative views and perspectives on the controversial issues around the Princes in the Tower and who, if anyone, was responsible for their disappearance. Nicola and Julian were excellent guides and I enjoyed their input as we toured the various sites. Matthew Morris’s talk was a highlight. I am looking forward to hearing from Julian again at the Bayeux Tapestry tour later this year. Thank you!

The whole weekend had been carefully planned to ensure that the subject was covered thoroughly. The tour manager was always available and extremely helpful - nothing appeared to be a problem and the whole weekend went very well. Planning to book again in 2017.
Review by Johnson who travelled 05-October-2024
We were impressed by the organisation and content of the tour. The academic speakers were excellent. (Your survey invites us to rate the tour manager but not the academic leader. We were a bit uclear what the role of the tour manager was as all the information came from the academic leader. Perhaps she did things behind the scenes.) We were also impressed that several travellers had been on previous tours with your company which is obviously a good recommendation.

All aspects of this tour were excellent, the highlights being the wealth of historical expertise and knowledge given by the two experts. The talks and guided tours were packed with knowledge but were engaging and witty at times. The hotel was friendly and the food good, catering to dietary needs, which had worried a member of our group beforehand. There was no need to worry - everything was catered for and we all had a wonderful time.

An excellent tour which we thoroughly enjoyed, with excellent guide and tour manager. We almost cancelled at the last minute as I’d required breast cancer surgery the week before, but I’m so glad we didn’t as it cheered me up so much. I was worried it might be too strenuous but it was very well paced for all levels of energy. My only comment is that we had super guides and bus driver but I couldn’t find anything on your website about tipping policy so wasn’t sure if it would cause offence. Did I miss something?

The tour of Richard the third to Leicester, was a other enjoyable weekend. Nicola as tour manager and Julian, once again espoused both excellent knowledge and no shortage of enthusiasm for this period of history. Both Nicola and Julian, were approachable and helpful with their knowledge of this period when any questions arose. Hotel was overall quite good, food was of a good standard. The weather was even better glorious! Look forward to another break with Travel editions in the near future.

Everything was above order and as expected. Hotel, food, Lecturer, who did most of the work and, rarely seen Tour Manager, were excellent. However, for people who have no cars but come by trains or buses , it is not really ideal to have hotels that far out, great as they may be, but trainfares and taxis which are absolutely necessary, make it a fairly expensive and in the end tiring holiday. Next time I will travel with you outside Britain. As mentioned above the lecturer was tiredlessly excellent. His knowlege was immense.

This visit was up to the usual excellent standard. The tours were good as were the lectures. In particular, the lecture given by Professor Turi King was riveting and left the group much to think about. My only negative comment is the food at the hotel which, I thought, was not to the standard expected from a Hilton hotel. Just a little disappointing. However, overall I really enjoyed the tour and my thanks to Julian and Nick for making the visit memorable.

Overall excellent. Very enjoyable. Tiring but worth it. Mike and Julian were mines of info and also good company. The hotel was extremely clean and the staff were welcoming. BUT: the one (sic) lift was a route march (the term used by a fellow guest). A hotel that large needs more than one quite small lift. Only one caveat re the trip: the well packed schedule had us back about 35/40 minutes late on the Sunday. On return we booked an extra night to avoid arriving home late and exhausted. Looking forward to our next Travel Eds trip. Finally, we were blessed with good weather - I dread to think of Bosworth etc in pouring rain!
Review by smith who travelled 24-September-2021
This was a fascinating tour. The choice of destinations was excellent and both Mike and Julian provided a wealth of interesting information on the subject. The talk by Dr Richard Buckley about the discovery of Richard's grave was also a highlight. Fine, dry weather was a bonus as we were out of doors a lot of the time. The hotel accommodation was adequate but rather lacking in provision for a vegetarian, which I mentioned to Reception when booking out.

Review by Otridge who travelled 06-August-2021
Mike and Julian were excellent hosts and guides. This is the sixth time, Julian has been on one of our our tours and he continues to be highly knowledgeable, enthusiastic and witty. Turi's talk was also first class. I suggested to Julian a possible history tour of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. This might include battlefields at Evesham and Tewkesbury as well as cathedrals and Berkeley Castle. Well done everyone and expect to book next year.
Review by Anonymous who travelled 06-August-2021
Excellent tour. Specialist guides very knowledgeable and pitched all talks at the right level for all.
Review by Kin who travelled 06-August-2021
The tour content was varied, interesting places enabling a.good feel for the historical context. Julian and Mike were excellent guides with a tremendous range of knowledge and an entertaining way of imparting it. This gave a very relaxed feel to the tour; I gained a great deal of knowledge in a short space of time without feeling I was being lectured to. Turi King's talk on the DNA profile and identification of Richard III's remains was one of the highlights, the others being the Richard III visitor centre and Leicester Cathedral. The hotel was good, but one major disappointment was that the restaurant wasn't open on the Sunday evening, the bar menu limited and space to eat at a premium. We were not advised of this in advance by Travel Editions; the staff said "it's on the website" but we had no reason to check the website. With around a third of the group staying on, I'm sure some arrangement could have been made for dinner, particularly as there was another group dining also. A disappointing end to what was otherwise a super weekend.

The two specialist guides Julian and Mike really added value. The expert talks was pitched at just the right level. Julian was so knowledgeable and entertaining. We really appreciate the guided tour in Nassington by the lady of the Manor too! It was a well planned and well paced tour - we are happy to recommend. For supper, the hotel did very well in the first evening, but service was slow for the second. The bag collection at the end of the trip was extremely slow, and should be improved
Review by Bacon who travelled 06-August-2021
I thoroughly enjoyed the trip; in particular Julian Humphries was an excellent, knowledgeable and highly informative guide. The only negative aspect was that the decision to drop off just one participant at Leicester railway station meant that we did not get back to the hotel an hour later than scheduled. This resulted in my journey home on that evening being delayed. Otherwise I would highly and unreservedly recommend the trip.
Review by Anonymous who travelled 06-August-2021
Flight etc & Brochure description n/a. Mike’s and Julian’s enthusiasm was infectious. Turi King was exceptional. Tour bus was very good and driver Keith was excellent. Was expecting more from a 4* hotel: no servicing except by request and even had to replenish our tea tray each day. Stayed an extra night and, like others found, the evening closure of the restaurant was disappointing.

Review by Marshall who travelled 21-June-2019
Extremely enjoyable. Julian Humphrys was knowledgable and entertaining throughout the weekend and one of the highlights of the tour was standing in the recently-discovered site of the battle of Bosworth listening to Mike Ingram explain in graphic and moving detail how the battle was fought. The reason I have given the Hilton Hotel slightly less than "excellent" was due to its location. Being on the edge of the motorway I can see it had advantages for people travelling by car but for those of us on the train it was not so convenient and in my case the cost of travelling between the hotel and to the railway station by taxi was almost the same as the train fare from my home in West Yorkshire to Leicester. Also, being so isolated with no public transport, meant we were not able to explore the city centre on our own. Apart from that, thank you for a superb holiday.
Review by Endersby who travelled 21-June-2019
We enjoyed the Richard III weekend very much - the tour guides/lecturers gave entertaining and informative commentaries (occasionally too fast-paced to take in properly...) Visits to Kirby Muxloe and Prebendal Manor were very special, and seeing the site where the Battlefields Trust considers the battle of Bosworth really took place was a highlight. Arrangements went like clockwork - and Oscar was charming !
Review by Hunt who travelled 21-June-2019
A Superb trip my first time with Travel Editions. A couple of points re. HOTEL--Hilton Leicester--Very nice generally however---. 1. There were no biscuits in room to have with tea which was stingy of the Hilton. 2. No marmalade put out at breakfast!---On asking for it I was given a small bottle but why did I and other guests have to ask for mamrmalade each morning? 3. I Commend the Hilton for serving the butter at room temperature so it was spreadable. (Rare in hotels). TOUR GUIDES---- Excellent they certainly knew their history but standing a long time was a bit too much sometimes--either history could be condensed or chairs provided for tour guests to sit on FOOD---- Excellent but on the Sunday after the salad lunch we were ony given a cup of coffee! -- We could have at least have been given a biscuit with our coffee!-- Or better still a simple chocolate icecream in a packet----no attempt at dessert at all was stingy. PREBENDAL MANOR;--- Fascinating history however as owner must have been paid to show us around she could have had the house dusted & cobwebs removed. The water in the large glass vase on the main table was very murcky and dirty. --Also the lady herself could have smartenned herself up to show guests around her home--she was wearing clothes that most of us would wear to do housework or gardenning. Such a shame. Overall it was an excellent two night holiday. I was impressed with Travel Editions & look forward to booking again. Thank you Very Much.

The only slight downside was the meal at Prebendal Manor; we were warned this was only a light lunch, so weren't expecting anything lavish of course, but it was a very cold day and pouring with rain, so it would have been nice to have some hot soup to go with the salad, and this wouldn't have been too difficult or costly. I'm already looking forward to next year, so please send brochure as soon as possible.

Had fabulous trip on the Richard III tour! The historians (Julian and Mike) made The places that visited on the trip were interesting and we loved the picturesque Kirby Muxloe. We enjoyed the food at the hotel very much and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Special mention to our helpful driver Oscar, who delivered us in comfort to our destinations on the tour. I would recommend this tour and travel editions history tours in general because they ensure all your needs are catered for and that the historians who guide you are experts in their field and wonderfully friendly.

Administration was only poor because our original tour was cancelled at short notice which caused us considerable inconvenience. I must add from Travel Editions this was handled quickly and efficiently unfortunately LNER was the problem as a result of the cancellation. The tour was excellent. The experts could not be faulted. They combined excellent historical knowledge with great organisation. They were very approchable and more than willing to consider our comments and opinions. The tour was very well organised while remaining relaxed and enjoyable. Super! I returned inspired determined to re-read all my Richard III books again.

Our first UK special interest tour with Travel Editions and very impressed with organisation, tour manager expertise and talks from experts. Sites visited all relevant to the topic and of great interest. We have been with you overseas (also excellent) but will now be looking closely at more of your special interest UK offerings as well in the future.

We enjoyed the tour very much. The talks were informative. The trips on Saturday in particular were excellent. We think you could reconsider the itinerary on Sunday as we found it a bit tiring & too long in the coach. The hotel was ok & much as you would expect from that kind of chain hotel. Very good location. We liked the group leaders & they were very knowledgable.

Been on tour on numerous occasions with both Mike and Julian, "The Dynamic Duo". They are brilliant!

Both experts were extremely good as was the speaker on the second night. There was several small problems with my room which would have been sorted if I had been there longer.

A fascinating Tour with 2 excellent and knowledgeable guides. The visit to the Prebendal Manor House could have been difficult as the owner had mixed up the dates. But Mike immediately arranged for us to have lunch at the local pub which coincided with the England Panama match!
Review by Ford who travelled 22-June-2018
I really enjoyed this tour. Both leaders were excellent, they were very knowledgeable and approachable. I admired the way the confusion over lunch at the Prebendal Manor House was sorted out so smoothly. The other glitch was noise at the hotel on Saturday night but I think this is inevitable with weekend weddings and apart from that it was a very good hotel with excellent food.

Suberb. Attention to detail faultless. Special mention must be made of Julian Humphreys whose knowledge, sense of humour and engaging manner brought Richard 111 vividly to life. Will certainly consider another trip soon.

Excellent weekend with very informative tours and lectures by Julian Humphrys and Mike Ingram. Richard Buckley's evening talk was especially interesting as he was the lead archaeologist on the dig. Hotel was also excellent with very pleasant and helpful staff.

It was my first trip and I found it very interesting and well organised. I will certainly consider booking another one in the future.

This was our first Travel Editions tour, and we had some misgivings about being part of a structured tour. We needn't have worried! The visits were well paced and extremely interesting. Our tour guides, Julian and Mike were wonderfully knowledgeable, and not just within the confines of the tour, but over a whole range of subjects. We saw and learnt things that we would not have done "under our own steam". Guest speaker Richard Buckley brought the background to the "King in the Carpark" story vividly to life. We can't fault this tour, and are already planning our next one!
Review by Champion who travelled 11-August-2017
Our two historians were exceptionally good. They were both very knowlegeable and highly entertaining. Both evening talks were very good, though perhaps if I'd had no awareness of the history I would have been floundering a little on who was who. Perhaps there were too many churches though I suppose they are generally the only buildings from the period. Sunday I felt was a little less good. A visit to a castle which exists only as an ancient earthwork seemed a touch pointless. The story of the church was well told but I felt the Prebendal Manor, though it's owner was interesting, had too little left of the original to really have a clear idea of what it would have been like in the 1400's and the garden was probably reasonably mediaeval about 10 years ago but could have done with some diagrams to show the likely extent of the manorial estate and a good deal more gardening to make it worth a visit. The medicinal plants though were interesting. Our coach journeys, even when we were forced on a long detour were hugely enhanced by the informative commentary. Thank you. I enjoyed it.

It could have been made clearer on the visits where it was necessary to see the site. The Fotherghay and Bosworth Field it was good to see the actual site but would have preferred not to stand while information was given. Some members were ederly and using walking aids so I am not sure how they got on. I did enjoy the visit as a whole.

An excellent trip, every aspect of the trip went well. The lecturers were extremely well informed and interesting. We would be interested ourselves in receiving a brochure of other similar holidays.

Excellent well organised , physical abilities of group never forgotten.. Tour Manager worked well with Mike Ingram who dealt so well with the range of knowledge of all the people on the tour .He really knew the period. The evening talk by Richard Buckley brought the ' dig ' to life. Leicester University if you google it have some very interesting talks by the other people involved. The most difficult part was finding the Hilton Hotel off Leicester's terrible traffic system as you come off the M1 !
Review by Mrs Valerie Foss who travelled 07-October-2016
Richard III was an exciting action-packed weekend. The two speakers gave us an excellent insight through their very clear and interesting lectures. The whole weekend was a most rewarding experience. Just one quibble: the food at the Hilton was rather disappointing.

Battle plans provided were excellent. However, a printed family tree of key players would help understanding on the introductory talk on the Friday night, and act as an aide memoire during the weekend. Overall, an excellent tour, although Prebendal Manor (although interesting) didn't seem to fit the subject. Have you considered a tour covering King Stephen and the anarchy?

A few problems with reception at hotel, room was good but apart from the breakfast which was good, the food was poor. Sometimes information about what was happening when was a little sketchy. The guest speaker was excellent. It was a full programme but very good.
Review by Dr Patricia Dutton who travelled 12-August-2016
The talk on the fist night bore no resembence to the title given in the brochure etc. A straight list of battles was a very poor substitute to the expected summary of the '...turbulant events leadin up to the end of Richard III's short reign.'

Pre-tour reading essential, complicated subject. Two door coach essential for a group of 50. Good choice of hotel. Value for money. Will look out for more of your trips.
Review by Mrs Irene Bayley who travelled 12-August-2016
The weekend was most enjoyable, both for myself (who had been interested in Richard III for many years) and for my husband (who had alot to learn). We felt that the weakest link was the lecture on the first night, which set out to explain the background to the Wars of the Roses This could only be followed by those people who already knew a great deal, but was completely confusing for the rest of the audience. Giving a talk consisting of a great number of family trees with little explanation is a very bad idea and the speaker needs to trim down the trees and do more explanation. Richard Buckley's talk on the Saturday night was, on the other hand, absolutely wonderful. Other than that I would recommend the tour to anyone. Judith Broadgate.

I DID send a survey after last week-end's Tour but I think it worthwhile saying it again! I thoroughly enjoyed the Richard 111 weekend. The Manager and Lecturers were excellent. The fine weather was a bonus!!
Review by Mrs Margaret Phipps who travelled 22-July-2016
Very informative. Every minute filled. No concessions to the age or physical abilities of the group. Both lecturers focused on the subject and were obviously specialists. The wonderful weather made outside events very pleasant. Food excellent. Hotel rooms excellent. When I've recovered I may consider another trip.

I thought the weekend with "Richard lll" was fascinating and we couldn't have had better speakers and guides who inspired us with their knowledge and enthusiasm. I have long been a supporter of Richard and this tour confirmed my belief that he was unfairly maligned and denigrated. It was also amazing to see that so much remains of medieval Leicester and it was particularly moving to actually see the tomb in the cathedral and to visit his childhood home at Fotheringhay. I would thoroughly recommend this tour and hope to attend the "Richard in the North" tour next year. Thank you!

excellent trip and good value for what was included. only criticism is that there was no mid morning stop for coffee/tea on second day (did stop for toilet break only). most of us need a bit of a break from everything going on. It was ok on day 1 because there was a cafe at the Richard third centre and lots of us had a break then.
