Our Southern Provence tour is based in the delightful seaside town of Sanary-sur-Mer, close to Cassis and Bandol and visits Aix-en-Provence for the day, as well as concentrating on the wonderful myriad of sights along the coast including the lovely town of Cassis and the dramatic Calanques cliffs, Bandol, Toulon, Hyeres, Bormes-les-Mimosas, and St Tropez.

Day 1: Travel by Eurostar direct from St Pancras to Marseille or from St Pancras/Ebbsfleet to Lille and onwards to Marseille by TGV.
On arrival, transfer by coach (approx. 1 hour) to Sanary-sur-Mer and the Soleil et Jardin Hotel.
Day 2: Full day tour to Bandol, Cassis and the Calanques.
The cheerful Mediterranean resort of Bandol is best known for its excellent red wine which has been produced here since 600BC. Unusually, it is often served cold. Cassis has managed to retain its small fishing village charms and has remained largely unaltered since it attracted painters such as Signac and Derain in the early 20th century. Along the coastline between Marseille and Cassis, the turquoise sea has pummelled the limestone cliffs into a series of deep, dramatic inlets – the Calanques. The best way to view this beautiful area is from the sea and there are plenty of boat trip options if you would like to.
Day 3: Full day tour to Hyères and Toulon.
The oldest resort on the French Riviera, the town of Hyères is gathered around the Castle of Saint Bernard which sits on a hilltop four kilometres from the sea. The palm-tree-and-Belle-Époque-building-lined streets once hosted luminaires such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Edith Wharton and Queen Victoria.The Place Massena, Mediterranean gardens of Castel Sainte-Claire and the gardens of the modernist Villa Noailles are must visits. Toulon is France’s second-largest naval port thanks to its fine natural harbour. The daily produce market on Cours Lafayette is lovely for a browse and the Quai Cronstadt is a great place to watch the world go by.
Day 4: Full day to explore Marseille at your leisure.
Day 5: Full day to relax and explore Sanary-sur-Mer at your leisure.
A charming little seaside town, rather than a tourist resort, Sanary has a lovely coastline of small beaches and a bustling colourful harbour replete with medieval tower. It is the perfect place to stroll, enjoy the many harbourside cafes, bars and restaurants or simply relax.
Day 6: Full day tour to Aix-en-Provence.
The elegant city of Aix-en-Provence is immediately attractive with its medieval centre a knot of grand architecture and atmospheric lanes, peppered with fountained squares. Home to artist Paul Cézanne, you will find his studio preserved exactly as he left it on his death in 1906. There are many lovely cafes to sit in and watch the world go by along the Cours Mirabeau.
Day 7: Full day tour to Saint-Tropez and Bormes-les- Mimosas.
Saint-Tropez has long been the glamorous playground for the rich and famous, having started out as a Bohemian hangout in the early 20th century for artists such as Matisse, Dufy, Signac and Bonnard – you can see some of their art in the Musée de l‘Annonciade. Despite its popularity with tourists, Saint-Tropez has managed to maintain its Mediterranean charms. The medieval hill village of Bormes has plummeting pedestrianized streets that lead to lively cafés and lovely coastal views. At the foot of the Massif des Maures, Bormes is full of picturesque old buildings and is known for its abundance of flowers.
Day 8: Transfer back to Marseille station to catch the return TGV to Paris. At Paris, board the return Eurostar service to Ebbsfleet/St Pancras.
Please note - There will be no option to travel to/from Ebbsfleet on the departure dates which offer the direct outbound service.

I thought this was a very well thought out tour. Karen was excellent. She gave us all the informtion we needed at the right time. I was particularly grateful for her decision to start half an hour later on the first day since it gave us time to recover from a very early start.

Sanary is 1 of our favourite Travel Editions venues and this our 3rd visit did not disappoint. Karen was as ever a gem of a Tour Manager and greatly enhanced the holiday. She has a wide breadth of knowledge and a good sense of fun, whilst caring for the needs of the whole group. The trips are diverse and interesting and the hotel is very comfortable and very well situated for access to the restaurants and town.

We have been on many TE tours, and we have repeated this one a few times, mainly due to the excellence of the base location, Sanary-sur-Mer. The various destinations are well-chosen and varied, with Marseille especially being worth multiple visits. This time we opted out of the odd day’s itinerary, in favour of doing our own thing in and around Sanary, but that is no criticism of any of the destinations. Karen, our Tour Manager, was excellent (again), in terms of information provided and efficient but relaxed guidance. The small size of the group made it easier to get to know people, but it’s a mystery as to why it wasn’t fully booked, in spite of it being one of TE’s best French rail tour destinations. The hotel is very good – with excellent breakfasts and air-conditioned rooms! With the outward leg using the direct St Pancras – Marseille Eurostar and the return one using Lille (and not Paris) for the train-change, getting there and back is fairly painless and stress-free! Just one comment on the tour leader Terry - he must learn to use the term Britain and British rather than England and English all the time. It is insulting to the outer countries in the Union. We do not have English passports!!

This was our 2nd trip to Sanary and it didn’t disappoint. Our hotel room was lovely and the air conditioning was thankfully very efficient. Terry was an excellent and informative Tour Manager and we enjoyed the various trips very much. It was unfortunate that our early breakfast on the last day was overlooked by the hotel staff and the reception team could have been more welcoming but overall this did not detract from our enjoyment of this very special place.

An enjoyable week in a truly lovely location. The hotel was good but we were disappointed that there was no outdoor pool as shown in the brochure. The tour manager was informative and did a wonderful job of shepherding a rather large group of elderly people around the sites on various visits. We take our hats off to him in the way he dealt with our homeward trip when we discovered that we were in the wrong railway terminus altogether! We assume it was an administrative error as we all had tickets from Marseilles St Charles but the train was going from another station altogether. How he got everyone to the correct place with no time to spare was a miracle and could have been part of a Carry On film!! Well done Terry! The excursions were most enjoyable but left little time to explore Sanary. May we suggest that some half day trips are included, perhaps to a vineyard with the opportunity to taste and buy wine or to gardens. This would broaden the type of experiences and allow more time to relax in such a pretty fishing village. In view of the fact that the journey home is long and the age of the group tends to be elderly, a half day trip on the day previous to the homeward journey might be advisable. We enjoyed the week immensely, despite a few setbacks and would certainly travel with Travel Editions in the future.

Sanary remains one of the best of the Travel Editions bases, and, in view of that and the enhanced travel arrangement in the form of a direct Eurostar from London to Marseille on the outward leg, it surprised us that the tour was not fully booked. We’ve done this tour several times previously, and enjoyed it greatly, particularly the Sanary base – hence the repetition. The introduction of a through train from London to Marseille made it even better. (Anything that cuts out a train change in Paris is an improvement!) We enjoyed the various destinations, although we skipped the day to Aix, as we don’t especially like the place! Marseille is a particular highlight – made even better by the new museum (MUCEM). It’s a pity a couple of people opted out of that day, put off by Marseille’s now-irrelevant image from the past. Our tour manager, Karen, was excellent, as was Rémy, our driver whom we already knew. The small size of the group on this occasion, though unfortunate from Travel Editions’ perspective, made all the practicalities (including getting on and off trains and coaches) work very smoothly. We see that one reviewer was disappointed at the small number, but we regarded that as a plus factor, albeit a fortuitous one. David and Jean Peters

On a couple of days we had tours which went to two places. On both occasions it would have been better to have done the part where we had to climb steep paths as the first stop of the trip when it wasn't quite so hot.(Toulon trip & Saint Tropez trip)

I wanted to travel by rail and the journey down was wonderful. There were problems on the last leg of the return as my seat did not exist! I Managed to grab a fold down seat in the corridor which my tour manager kindly took turns with me on but it was not especially comfortable. I was delighted with everything else.

Hélène,our tour manager, and Rémy,our driver,could not have done more to make the holiday a success. On board information, notes & maps were excellent and Rémy was always prepared to go the extra mile. I had a lovely room in the hotel with a balcony and the hotel staff were always helpful. Sanary is a charming resort with none of the yachting bling of some other resorts along the coast. The excursions took us to some of the most delightful and interesting places in Southern Provence, from bustling Marseille to pretty hilltop villages. Highly recommended.

I did feel that the hotel did not deserve a 4 star rating. It was possibly awarded 4 stars because it had indoor and outdoor pools, however it certainly did not come up to the usual 4 star standard expected.

Our hotel room looked out onto a car park ie cars parked just by our bed on same level. The veranda doors did not open. They had been screwed shut, which we suspect is illegal. I complained to the hotel manager at leadt three times and requested a different room. I was told the hotel was full. In other respects the room and the hotel were satisfactory, with excellent breakfasts. Etc.

I do not consider the hotel to be 4 star. Room service poor. Bedding not replaced frequently. Wify poor, television reception poor. Bathroom shampoo etc poor. Nice to have tea and coffee facilities but they were not replaced.

Both the tour manager and coach driver were excellent, going out of their way to enable us to see everything. Maps + info given on the coach was invaluable. So nice to be left to explore on our own and not be led around like tourists! Also good to have a free day in the middle, esp on market day. I think the visit to Bandol is superfluous after Cassis and oerhaps another village in hinterland would improve the tour...or a visit to a vineyard. The pleasureable aspect is the freedom to roam armed with appropriate information.

Of the many Travel Editions tours we have done, this is the one we have repeated a number of times – as we said last year! We love Sanary as a base, the hotel remains good, and the tours are interesting and varied. A slight tweak maybe worth considering is to have a day in Marseille – maybe instead of Aix-en-Provence, which has become “over-touristy”, and is in any event a destination on your Avignon-based tour. You did temporarily put Marseille on the itinerary when it was the European City of Culture a few years back, but did not retain it. That’s a pity, as there’s much more to do and see than in Aix, and it’s somewhat nearer to get to. Our tour manager, Terry, was excellent and most helpful in every respect. Travel arrangements went smoothly, and it was good to have a train-change in Lille rather than Paris on the outward journey (a subject discussed with you on many occasions!). I always wait a short time before submitting my reviews in order to see what others say, as this provides very fertile ground for further comment! So it’s good to note that the drink-making facilities in the hotel bedroom has yet again come up as being worthy of mention – to the exclusion of any comment at all on the overall holiday experience! I think Travel Editions should levy a fine of £10 on any traveller whose review mentions hotel-room drink-making facilities. Oh dear, does that mean I now owe you £10?

Hotel excellent. Just 2 comments. No in room provision for tea making. Coffee maker just not suitable as designed to function for demi tasse cups only. Perhaps this will be a permanent problem in France. Our room window was without a locking handle so remained unlocked throughout the stay.

Another excellent tour. Sanary is a small, safe and friendly little port. There are plenty of good restaurants and on the day there during the week there was plenty to do. The tours were interesting and in traditional TE style, everywhere we went we were given maps and freedom to explore. The boat trip to the Calanques was particularly memorable. Another part of France we now know thanks to TE!

Firstly this is not a complaint but an overall account of our holiday experience. Alex our tour manager was second to none as was Reme our driver. As well as carrying out their duties to the highest possible standard they are also lovely people. The hotel was a great disappointment and didn't bear any resemblance to the hotel on your link. Firstly we were very disappointed with the location of our room which was in the bowels of the hotel which we actually had to walk downstairs to. Some of our fellow travellers had lovely rooms with balconies but we were down in the car park. We all paid the same price for our holiday so we thought this was rather unfair. On the first night of the holiday we were woken by somebody entering our room which was most alarming to say the least. Before we could find the light switch, they had left so we spent the rest of the night with the table and chairs against the door. The next morning (which couldn't come quick enough) Alex ascertained that one of the other guests wanted a second room key and gave reception our room number by mistake. Obviously reception didn't ask them to identify themselves by producing their room key. They could have given our room key to anybody which we found to be totally unsatisfactory. The safe in our room didn't work which we reported to reception on the day we arrived. We were told that it would be fixed that day or the next - it was never fixed! Our key card was very temperamental. More often than not we would have to play around with it before it would open the door despite reporting it to reception who told us that it was our cell phones which prevented it from working and it wasn't until the end of the week when Alex was with us (he was in the room next door) and witnessed the problem that they deemed to replace it. The hotel was like the Marie Celeste with very few staff to be seen and no atmosphere. On our first visit to the pool the electric cleaning machine was in the pool while people were in the water. One of the guests removed it as she noticed a label stating that it should be removed before anybody entered the water. I hope this account of our experience is helpful.
It was good to meet the tour manager Alex again as always he was excellent. He is so knowledgeable and easy going and as always made the holiday special. It would be good to know which tours he will be doing next year.

Tour Manager, Alex Patrimonio a lovely gentleman and passionate about all things French. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Had problem with hotel room (303) in that safe did not work. Hotel could not fix problem, offering poor excuses. We changed rooms after first night (to 202) after insisting change.Transpired there were 3 other rooms with inoperable safes. This would be known to hotel yet fobbed off. Scarcity of staff at times. Apart from this, staff were charming. Good breakfasts, clean hotel. Nicely appointed. Gentle 10 min stroll to port. Enjoyed the coach tours with Reme, the driver, who was a safe steady, patient driver. He knew the area well. Because of two road accidents on separate days we were diverted but Reme got us safely to our destination. Good drop off and pick-up stops. My wife and I enjoyed the tour.

We have been on a few of your rail holidays in France, and this is the one we have chosen to repeat several times, as Sanary is a lovely place to be based, irrespective of whether one goes on all the days’ outings. There are many restaurants , and all our evening meals – at different ones - were enjoyable. We have always been made most welcome at the hotel, which is highly satisfactory - good quality of bedrooms (we’ve been in several!) and pleasant breakfasts. (Disagree with another reviewer’s description of breakfast as “basic” – there’s a wide choice and it’s perfectly acceptable.) Our Tour Manager, Alex, provided a superb, attentive service with good humour, and our driver, Rémy, known to us already, was again excellent. The trips, as we already knew, were varied and interesting. A slight pity that the changeover from Eurostar to TGV had to be in Paris rather than Lille, but we are aware from conversations with you on this subject that Lille would have been used if feasible – so one tries to be philosophical! Overall this was another enjoyable - and repeatable – experience.

Alex, the Tour Manager, was considerate, caring, helpful and amusing. Sanary was a very pleasant town to base the holiday. It was a pity there wasn't a flying option as the train journey was very tiring - and Eurostar check-in at Paris was a nightmare (not your fault).

Overall a well organised and enjoyable trip to a beautiful area, especially at this time of year when the flowers are in full bloom. Hotel pleasant but breakfast fairly basic. Some more fresh fruit would have been welcome, given that the local markets are heaving with every fruit imaginable. Excellent, helpful tour manager, Alex, gave us so much interesting information. The coach driver was very pleasant too. Hotel a little more than the stated five minutes walk from the harbour, more like ten. A lot of steep hills and steps to climb on the trips which were difficult for older people. We would have liked maybe an extra day between trips to do our own thing, but enjoyed them all. The Eurostar waiting area in Paris Gare du Nord was overcrowded, very hot and almost unbearable. We had booked this trip in part because a change at Lille was advertised, but later it was changed to Paris. Wherever possible I would urge you to arrange a Lille transfer - so much easier - although I appreciate this is not always feasible, presumably due to timings. We would definitely take another tour with Travel Editions.

Thank you for another splendid holiday, everything went well, thanks in no small part to our excellent Tour manager Norman who endeared himself to everyone from the start by guarding our luggage at Lille during the period between the eurostar and TGV whilst we stretched our legs. We enjoyed our well organised visits to both parts of the "Le Grand Atelier du Midi" exhibitioin with excellent and knowledgeable guides. Overall, an excellent and well planned tour with very enjoyable visits and a knowledgeable and experienced tour manager. Met all our expectations. Hotel good but seemed somewhat understaffed - coffee replacement at break fast slow, minimal bar service. Could suggest a tour based at two locations as the desire to explore Sanary, though a delightful place, started to diminish after the fourth night.

It would help if we were reminded to bring maps sent in the travel pack the day before the trip takes place. In addition other maps to be distributed by the tour manager should be given out the day before. This will help tourists to prepare for the trip the day before. An extra free day would help. Serge was great as our tour manager. Hotel good and clean but bar not manned and it seemed like we were on the MarieCeleste. Change of train times caused us problems as we had already booked train from Euston.
