South Yorkshire was an economic powerhouse that has left a legacy of Victorian art and architecture that thrived when the region basked in its wealth built on its industry and mining. Civic pride as well as personal status inspired a host of wonderful buildings and the establishment of institututions that bear testimony to this vibrant period of the county’s history. This wonderful new tour looks at this legacy in the form of country houses, museums, galleries and civic architecture in the company of two experts, Prof.Anne and Dr Scott Anderson.

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Hilton Leeds City from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, private dinner with wine and an illustrated talk by Scott Anderson:  ‘Victorian Tiles and Architectural Ceramics.’

Day 2: Leeds City Art Gallery, Leeds Architecture Walk and Lotherton Hall.
Our series of visits starts with a morning in rejuvenated Leeds, a Victorian powerhouse that is emerging as one of England’s most vibrant cities. We start at Leeds Art Gallery with its great collection of Victorian and modern art as well as being home to the Henry Moore Institute, a world-recognised centre for the study of sculpture. After this visit, Anne and Scott will guide an architectural walk around the Victorian Quarter, full of fine Victorian buildings including magnificent shopping arcades, such as the County Arcade, Leeds Town Hall and the Corn Exchange. After free time for lunch (not included), we head by coach to Lotherton Hall, a fine Victorian country home and chapel which was home to the Gascoigne family from 1825 until it was gifted to the city of Leeds in 1968. It is a charming house, and a visit here gives a taste of the lives of both the English upper classes and their servants. This evening there will be an illustrated talk from Anne: ‘The De Morgans and their Circle’ and dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Cawthorne Victoria Jubilee Museum, Cannon Hall and Brodsworth Hall and Gardens.
Another packed day as we head to the quirky Cawthorne Victoria Jubilee Museum in Penistone, described in the museum’s literature as “a typical Victorian hotchpotch and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Whichever way you turn there is bound to be something of interest to catch your eye.” The Museum Society was founded in 1884 by the Rev Charles Tiplady Pratt and work started in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The museum was officially opened in 1889 and houses exhibits of domestic bygones, Victoriana, memorabilia, natural history, local history and local industries. From here we head to Cannon Hall Park & Gardens, sold to Barnsley Council in 1951, who turned this grand country house into a public museum, that now houses an important collection of fine and decorative art including ‘A Family of Artists’ exhibition with paintings by Evelyn de Morgan and ceramics by her husband, William. Our final visit of the day is to Brodsworth Hall & Gardens, saved from dereliction by English Heritage in 1988 and restored to its former glory.  Return to the hotel for approximately 17.00.
