Vienna - Klimt and The Secession Escorted Tour

5 nights starting from
£2569

  • Klimt Villa tour followed by champagne and light lunch

  • Vienna’s Art Nouveau district

  • Guided tour of Am Steinhof Church

  • Two lectures from Professor Anne Anderson

From the geometric façades of the Postal Savings Bank to the ethereal beauty of Am Steinhof, the treasures of the Leopold Museum, to a window on an artist’s world at Klimt Villa, witness the revolutionary spirit of the Secession.

In 1897 a group, including Klimt, Moser, Hoffmann and Olbrich, seceded from the Association of Austrian Artists in objection to its conservative ideologies. These painters, sculptors and architects formed the Vienna Secession, a group looking to explore the world of art without the restraints of academia and tradition, and in this respect, had no prevailing or prescribed style in which they worked. With the construction of the Secession exhibition house in 1898 the group were also able to hold exhibitions of new, unconventional artists and the best foreign artists that were seen as ‘avant garde’. Join Professor Anne Anderson to discover some of the Secession’s finest Art Nouveau works in stately Vienna.

imperial grandeur and modernist design at the Otto Wagner Hofpavillon, a jewel of Viennese architecture built in 1899 for Emperor Franz JosephThen onto Klimt Villa, the artist's studio from 1911 until his death in 1918. He created over 50 works here including masterpieces like 'The Bride'. We enjoy a light lunch with a glass of champagne after our tour. Next we visit the Ernst Fuchs Museum - a once derelict Wagner villa that was acquired and restored by Ernst Fuchs in 1972. We end the day with a visit to Wagner’s Am Steinhof Church, a triumph of architecture as a ‘total work of art’. Second talk from Anne tonight: ‘Klimt and Schiele, from Symbolism to Expressionism’.

Fantastic - very comprehensive tour, tour manager and lecturer excellent. Hotel room very cramped & stuffy & under eves, had to ask for air con to be fixed as sweltering on first nights & couldn't sleep. Otherwise perfect. Any chance that lectures notes could be emailed as have misplaced... ?

The skill and expertise of our tour guide are well-documented and well-deserved. I was lucky to experience them at first hand. I should like to make special mention of Sandra, our tour manager, not just for her indefatigable care and attention but for the excellent (unadvertised) 'tour guide' she provided on our coach travels around Vienna. The richness of the information she shared with us and the ease of her delivery was a welcome and unexpected bonus. Thank you, Sandra.

The unnecessarily early start to arrive at a hotel that wasn't ready to receive us was both tiring and annoying. Apart from that the tour was intensive but fine.

This was an excellent trip which surpassed my expectations. One grumble - was it really necessary to fly out so early? I was falling asleep in the evening lecture and I was not alone.

It was Anne Anderson's enthusiasm at Northampton and Leicester (Mackintosh/ Gimson etc) that encouraged us to take this trip - we were not disappointed. A really great weekend with a friendly group. Sandra Drake's exceptional skill as Tour Manager was a delight and her sensitive response to her guests limitations was especially appreciated.

An enjoyable and interesting tour. Anne Anderson was terrific as always and I really enjoyed and valued her input. There were a couple of minor occasions when I felt our time could have been used better-waiting to get into the Burg Theatre and going round the interior of the Ernest Fuchs House- but overall it was a great tour and I learned a lot.

The inclusion of the visit to the Burgtheater was not a success and the time would have been better spent at the Leopold Museum or having a break between that and the Wien Museum.

While I appreciate there is a lot to see, perhaps this tour could have been better paced. Specifically, the Saturday afternoon trips to the Ernst Fuchs Museum and the Am Steinhof Church added little to the overall experience.

Very good briefing from Dr Ann Anderson, but too much standing about and strenuous activity for some more elderly members of the group. Sandra McGill,Tour Manager was very supportive of two elderly members who suffered health problems.

A very enjoyable trip with an interesting itinerary. Ann Anderson was as good as we remembered from Nancy - hugely knowledgeable, fun, friendly and helpful. And we'd like to put in a special word about Sandra, the tour manager, who had to cope with a number of health problems among group members which she did admirably, as well as looking after everyone else. She really was efficient, unflappable and exceedingly kind. A small point: I'm not sure why you addressed this questionaire and the confirmation invoice to my husband when I booked and paid for the trip.

I have already responded via Sandra McGill but just in case here is my response again. Our only problem was with the change in departure time and airport after we had already booked and paid the deposit. We wanted Gatwick and an afternoon departure. Heathrow in the morning meant an overnight stay there and it was more expensive in both money and time to get to as well.
