Two wonderfully unspoilt Greek islands that offer a very authentic Greek character
Fabulous scenery with enticing land and seascapes
Local knowledge – your guide not only leads the walks but also offers plenty of interesting information about the places and people you will encounter
A visit to Pirgos, a beautiful ‘marble’ village
This enticing walking tour begins on the Cycladic island of Tinos and ends on the island of Syros, both of which remain quite unspoilt maintaining a very authentic Greek character. Tinos is pretty, extremely green and lush and famous both for its cathedral of the Panagia and decorated dovecotes whilst Syros is an elegant and sophisticated island with an unusual architecture and a grand port.
Level of Walking
The walking on this tour is moderate, which means nothing too challenging. The Cycladic islands are fairly rocky in character so getting around them is done on small footpaths, some of them are goat-paths and other are wide and cobbled. In some places the paths have been destroyed to make way for dirt roads which we use as well. Though the distances vary greatly each day the length of the walks tends to be between 3 and 5 hours per day, (a minimum of 7kms and a maximum of 15kms in a day), with plenty of breaks for coffee, lunch, chats, and swims. Ascents are occasional with a maximum ascent of approximately 400 to 450 metres undertaken on two of the days walks.
Your guide is Jonathan Peat. Jonathan has been guiding walks in SW France, his adopted home for more than 20 years, and also Greece. His tours in Greece have proved enormously popular and our expanded range of tours in France and Greece have been tried and tested by him for many years – his philosophy remains the same wherever he guides: to introduce the visitor to the unspoilt, beautiful nature of a region, and its authentic culture.
Day 1: Fly from London Gatwick to Mykonos.
On arrival travel by boat to Tinos for a four night stay at the Golden Beach Hotel. Welcome dinner at local taverna.
Day 2: Falatados circular walk.
We walk across a huge variety of landscapes today, encountering pretty villages, ancient oak forests, as well as a ‘moonscape’. We enjoy lunch in a local taverna before walking back to our hotel.
Day 3: The marbled village of Pirgos.
From the village of Pirgos on the far west of the island, we walk up to the church of the Prophet Elija, which has wonderful views in every direction. We then descend to Panormos for lunch (and a swim) in a pretty fishing village, before returning to Pirgos to explore this attractive and fascinating village.
Day 4: The fortress of Exembourgo to Kolimbithres.
From the ruined Venetian fortress at Exembourgo, an ancient footpath takes us down to Koumaros and Volax, and on through a beautiful and lush valley with olive groves, oak trees, small chapels and numerous dovecotes to our lunch spot at Agapi. After lunch continue northwards until we reach the bay of Kolimbithra, for a refreshing dip.
Day 5: Journey to Syros.
We catch the morning ferry to Syros (approx. 40 minutes) and transfer to the Hermes hotel for a three-night stay. Rest of the day free to relax.
Day 6: Graffiti of the Ancient Mariners.
From the far north of the island at Kambos, we descend to the beautiful bay of Gramatta where we will see the remains of graffiti left by ancient mariners dating back several millennium. A picnic lunch on the beach and a swim in the crystal clear waters will prepare us for the return climb to Kambos and back by bus to Syros with en route visits to churches, a British cemetery and a Rembetiko (a style of music) museum.
Day 7: Kini to Papouri and Syros Town.
Starting from Kini, we take a boat to Barbarossa, where we can swim before ascending a wild and picturesque valley that takes us for lunch in a charming little taverna in Papoura and along the backbone of the island through Rixotopo and down to Syros Town. Evening at leisure.
Day 8: Transfer by boat to Mykonos for the return flight to London Gatwick.
NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 15 passengers.

Another excellent walking holiday with Jonathon. Due to hot weather Jonathon adapted timing of walks which went well and took us to amazing tavernas.

Tour guide Jonathan was his usual superb self, amending itinerary/meal bookings to take account of the extremely hot conditions such that we walked earlier and later in the day, resulting in a particularly memorable walk into the setting sun on Midsummer's evening! He also arranged for a hotel room to be available to us while awaiting our flight home in Mykenos. (Pity we couldn't have been on the earlier flight which departed overhead as we were having an afternoon siesta after lunch!!)

Temp higher than anticipated which meant Jonathan had to adjust programme which he managed admirably. Walking was glorious through clouds of painted lady butterflies, thyme and sage. Tavernas exceptional. Only drawback - we were booked on late flight which together with ferry times meant final day was spent hanging around (although a hotel room was put at our disposal) and very late arrival home. However I loved the holiday and felt very happy on return!

Jonathan our tour guide was fantastic. He had his hands full with some very tricky group dynamics. He seemed to us to handle everything thrown at him with great grace. Overall we really enjoyed the holiday. We were slightly put out however to be charged 20 Euro for a one kilometer journey in a Travel Editions local partner transfer bus from our hotel to the airport in Mykonos!

I loved this tour, it was magical. Tinos and Syros were beautiful, quiet, unspoilt islands, with wonderful scenery, people and food. The tour guide, Jonathan, introduced us to all the different aspects and enhanced the fascinating walks with his knowledge and love of Greece. The organisation was excellent and we enjoyed gorgeous fresh food cooked by local people in hidden tavernas; culminating in a wonderful barbecue on a deserted beach, which could only be reached by foot and boat. It was a great holiday.

We walked through aromatic landscapes towards our delicious lunch destinations stopping en route for contemplative moments and reflective readings to enhance our physical and spiritual experiences of the surrounding scenery. Jonathan our guide demonstrated exemplary skills with meticulous detail and sensitivity.

another fabulous holiday with the inspiring and informative Jonathan. interesting selection of carefully planned walks. excellent meals and comfortable hotels - the one on Syros being amazing. the walking was slightly more challenging than the Pyrenees trip that we enjoyed last year - but this contradicts what is in the brochure. once again Travel Editions came up trumps.

Review by Mr Duncan Barnet who travelled 31-May-2016
Last year we walked in Western Crete and didn't think anything could equal that but we were wrong! Jonathan was a wonderful walk leader and travel guide. The walks were all interesting and enjoyable and his readings added an extra dimension to the tour. Hotels, food and company were all excellent. Thank you, this was a really special holiday to remember.
Review by Mrs Linda Weir who travelled 31-May-2016
The journey out was v long and tiring. The brochure did not state how long the ferry crossing would be or how long we would have to hang around after our flight. Flying to Mykonos might have been preferable. With 3 days travelling a 10 day trip would have been better. Jonathan was a wonderful guide - v considerate and kind. We look forward to another holiday with him sometime. All in all a superb holiday. Thank you.
