William Morris - A Great Victorian

2 nights starting from
£369

  • Morris’ country home – Kelmscott Manor

  • 18th century Neoclassical Buscot Park

  • Oxford – including Morris’ college, Christ Church

Kelmscott Manor became a much loved retreat of William Morris, a place that fitted perfectly with his Arts and Crafts ideals of craftsmanship. Many of Morris’ admirers were to follow in his footsteps by setting up artistic communities in the Cotswolds and have left behind an abundance of fine craftsmanship for us to enjoy today. Explore this and his time in Oxford with Arts and Crafts expert Prof Anne Anderson.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive independently at the Blunsdon House Hotel, Swindon from 15.00. This evening there will be a welcome reception, dinner with wine and a talk by Anne Anderson - ‘William Morris and his continuing legacy’.

Day 2:  Buscot Park and Kelmscott Manor.
We begin the tour with a visit visit to the 18th century neoclassical Buscot Park. The estate and its contents were left to the National Trust in 1956, including works of art by Rembrandt and, in the music room, friend and collaborator of Morris, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones ‘The Legend of the Briar Rose’, inspired by the fairy-tale Sleeping Beauty. We will enjoy a ploughman’s lunch at Kelmscott before our afternoon private visit of Kelmscott Manor, with an introductory talk on arrival. Kelmscott was William Morris’ country home from 1871 until his death in 1896 and contains an outstanding collection of works by Morris and his associates.  This evening there will be a second lecture by Anne Anderson– ‘The Pre Raphaelites in Oxford’ plus dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Day 3: Morris' Oxford.
A full day exploring Morris’ time in Oxford starting with a visit to the superb Ashmolean Museum, followed by some time in the fabled Oxford Union, visiting the Old Library – one of the largest lending libraries in Oxford. This afternoon we will visit magnificent Christ Church College with its outstanding Morris & Co. stained glass windows. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.30.

We travelled by car so no comment on transport - other than Motorways were terrible! We enjoyed the tours and much of the company, especially the Welsh ladies. Scott knows his stuff obviously. We feel better educated as a result of the tour and our own additions before and after in Liverpool and the Lake District - taking in the Walker Art Gallery and also Brantwood and Blackwell, so all very cultural. Thank you. Maureen and David

Our first tour with Travel Editions, and a big success, due in no small part to our guide, Dr Scott Anderson, whose enthusiasm and depth of knowledge were most impressive. And he managed to keep our large group - 39 people, not all of whom were in the first flush of active youth - together and engaged and happy. Thanks to everyone involved.

The whole tour experience was superb: Scott and Anne were exceptional in their breadth of knowledge, passion for their subject, and geniality; all locations were well-chosen and the guides at each establishment were equally enthusiastic and friendly. The Blunsdon Hotel was extremely comfortable with great food and wines on offer. The staff there couldn't have done more to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The coaches we travelled in were very comfortable and Adrian proved to be an excellent driver. The only downside was the 'rudeness' of a few fellow guests, with quasi-aggressive questioning or behaviour that wasted time more profitably spent by hearing more of what Anne and Scott had to say. I do have problems filtering extraneous noise and am easily distracted by peripheral movement, but even my husband commented on the lack of sensitivity of some group members. Despite all this I am excited about the possibility of embarking on another Travel Editions Tour soon. Thank you so much for the attention to detail that made this such a wonderfully fulfilling experience.

Very interesting tour and I think anne Anderson is an excellent guide and lecturer accompanied by tour manager Scott Anderson, also an informative and entertaining guide. Learnt a great deal and really loved Kelmscott and buscot park. Oxford was great although I found it more tiring with so much walking involved. Recommend this tour highly.

very good especially the second day in Oxford- my head is full of much new information about the pre-Raphaelite paintings. Would prefer the second day to finish a little earlier in order to make onward travel easier.

I was very impressed with all aspects of this trip. It was really enjoyable and I am hoping to join you again next spring. Professor Anderson was very knowledgeable and passed on her knowledge in a very friendly informal way ( ably supported by her husband ! ). Thank you for a super experience.

Overall, a very enjoyable experience. The hotel was satisfactory, but we were unimpressed by the TV in our room, which had very poor transmission quality. and felt the food in the restaurant lacked a bit of sparkle, since the desserts on the 2nd night were almost identical to those on the 1st night! Otherwise, fine.
