The Art Nouveau movement, known as Liberty in Italy, was embraced by several Torinese architects and this elegant city became the Liberty capital of Italy. We explore its legacy on this superb tour in the company of renowned Art Nouveau expert, Prof. Anne Anderson. The brief flourishing came in the first decade of the 20th century with a host of lovely buildings by architects Pietro Fenoglio, Giovanni Gribodo and others, including the renowned Casa Fleur apartment block.

ITINERARY

Day 1:  Fly from London Gatwick to Turin
On arrival transfer to the hotel for check-in.  Evening lecture from Professor Anne Anderson, ‘Art Nouveau Style Liberty in Turin’, followed by a group dinner with wine.

Day 2: Full day in Turin
Morning visit to the 8 Gallery Lingotto Torino (which used to be the old Fiat Factory) and visit the rooftop race track. Continue on to the old Fiat Factory and Headquarters to view the external architecture of the building, before a walking tour of the Nizza area to see the Art Nouveau houses, such as Palazzinna Menzio. Afternoon visit to Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento, which includes some Art Nouveau pieces within its collection. Enjoy a second talk by Anne this evening, followed by dinner.

Day 3: Walking tour of Turin
Morning walking tour of the Cit Turin area, home to a dozen important Art Nouveau houses. Afternoon visit to the GAM Museum followed by a walking tour of the Art Nouveau houses of the Crocetta area. Dinner at leisure this evening.

Day 4: Museum then home
Morning visit to Museo Nazionale del Cinema (the Mole), an architectural landmark of the city at a height of 167.5 metres. When building was completed in 1889, it was the tallest building in Europe at the time. Free time for lunch (not included), then transfer to the airport for return flight to London Gatwick.

Professor Anne Anderson

Professor Anne Anderson

With a first degree in archaeology and a PhD in English, Anne was a senior lecturer in Art and Design History at Southampton Solent University for 14 years from 1993 to 2007. She specializes in the Aesthetic Movement, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Modernism. She has published several books, including The Perseus Series, which accompanied the Edward Burne-Jones exhibition held at Tate Britain (2018), and Art Nouveau Architecture (2020). She has also published over 50 articles in respected academic journals.

Anne has curated four national exhibitions, mostly recently Beyond the Brotherhood The Pre-Raphaelite Legacy (2019-20). American fellowships held include the Huntington Library, CA and the American Antiquarian Society, MA. She has lectured for The Arts Society, The Art Fund, the V&A Learning Academy, the National Trust and Christies’. Her career as an international speaker has taken her all over the world, including Spain, Germany, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. She undertook her sixth lecture tour for Arts National Australia in 2024. She has also lectured on several cruise ships, Swan Hellenic’s Minerva, the Spirit of Adventure and the Hebridean.
